(European Americana 743/197; Medina, BHA 3339; Palau 286883) First editions.Antonio de Solis y Ribadeneyra (1610 - April 19, 1686), Spanish dramatist and historian, was born at Alcala de Henares (less probably, Plasencia). He studied law at Salamanca, where he produced a comedy entitled Amor y obligacion, which was acted in 1627. He became secretary to the count of Oropesa, and in 1654 he was appointed secretary of state as well as private secretary to Philip IV. Later he obtained the lucrative post of chronicler of the Indies, and, on taking orders in 1671 severed his connection with the stage. He died at Madrid on the 19th of April 1686. Of his ten extant plays, two have some place in the history of the drama. El Antor al use was adapted by Scarron and again by Thomas Corneille as L'Amour de la mode, while La Gitanilla de Madrid, itself founded on the novela of Cervantes, has been utilized directly or indirectly by P A Wolff, Victor Hugo and Longfellow. The titles of the remaining seven are Triunfos de amor y fortuna, Euredice y Orfeo, El Alcetzar del secrete, Las Amazonas, El doctor Carlino, Un bobo hace ciento, and Amparar el enemigo. Amor y obligacion survives in a manuscript at the Biblioteca Nacional. The Historia de la conquista de Mexico, poblacion y progresos de la America septentrional, conocida por el nombre de Nueva Espama, covering the three years between the appointment of Cortes to command the invading force and the fall of the city, deservedly ranks as a Spanish prose classic. It was published in 1684; an English translation by Townshend appeared in 1724.Ignacio de Salazar y Olarte's separately published continuation of Solis's work, which can stand alone as a distinct work.George McClelland Foster, Jr born in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, on October 9, 1913, died on May 18, 2006, at his home in the hills above the campus of the University of California, Berkeley, where he served as a professor from 1953 to his retirement in 1979, when he became professor emeritus. His contributions to anthropological theory and practice still challenge us; in more than 300 publications, his writings encompass a wide diversity of topics, including acculturation, long-term fieldwork, peasant economies, pottery making, public health, social structure, symbolic systems, technological change, theories of illness and wellness, humoral medicine in Latin America, and worldview. The quantity, quality, and long-term value of his scholarly work led to his election to the National Academy of Sciences in 1976. With a Pre-Raphaelite engraved frontispiece, a wonderful etched engraving of Venus and the Sea-Gull by Scottish Artist Vereker Monteith Hamilton (1856-1931), and a small engraved vignette on the last leaf. Original front wrapper bound in at end. Bound ca. 1910 by Alfred De Sauty (stamp-signed "De Sauty" in gilt on front turn-in) in an Arts and Crafts style binding of full dark green morocco. Front cover with double gilt ruled border surrounding ten floral clusters with maroon morocco inlaid bouquets and fine pointillé, all joined together by a decorative gilt bordered inlaid dark blue morocco gilt decorated branch. In addition there are fourteen inlaid red morocco butterflies and two small gilt decorated inlaid red morocco circles. The center of the front cover is lettered in gilt "Cupid and Psyche". Rear cover with double gilt ruled border surrounding four similar 'corner-piece' floral clusters with maroon morocco inlaid bouquets. There is a central rectangular panel surrounded by a double gilt border enclosing four small gilt decorated inlaid red morocco circles. Spine with five raised bands, decoratively paneled and lettered in gilt in compartments with five decorative gilt butterflies, gilt ruled board-edges, triple gilt ruled turn-ins, top edge gilt, others uncut. Spine ends expertly and almost invisibly repaired. A superb and understated example of the genius of Alfred De Sauty. William Adlington (fl. 1566) was an Elizabethan translator most famous for his translation of Apuleius' Metamorphoses, a 2nd century Roman novel (based on a Greek text), known in English as "The Golden Ass" (1566). The plot follows Lucius, who driven by his desire to see and understand magic, accidentally transforms himself into a donkey. Adlington's version departs at times from the original source material, embracing the "art" of translation and resulting in an incredibly readable version (Robert H. F. Carver). The Most Pleasant and Delectable Tale of the Marriage of Cupid and Psyche is an excerpt from The Golden Ass. Scholars cite Adlington's translation as one of Shakespeare's sources of inspiration. The work of bookbinder Alfred de Sauty (1870-1949) is appreciated for its delicate tooling. Although little is known about his life he worked in both London (1898 to 1923) and Chicago (1923 to 1935). "For instance, scholars are unsure whether, when in London, de Sauty worked independently, for the firm of Riviere & Sons, or both. While in London, he may also have been a designer for the Hampstead Bindery and a teacher at the Central School of Arts and Crafts" (Harvard) as works he bound during this period are signed "de S" or "De Sauty." De Sauty's career in Chicago working for the hand bindery of R. R. Donnelley & Sons is better documented; bindings made here use the name R. R. Donnelly. "He signed his work at the foot of the front doublure, if present, and at the center of the bottom turn-in of the front upper board, if not" (Harvard). Fine.

ROBERT FULTON (1765-1815). Fulton was an American engineer and inventor best known for developing the world's first commercially successful steamboat. ALS. 1 pg. 7 x 13. N.d. N.p. An autograph letter signed R. Fulton in pencil: My Dear Sir I find on calculation that it will be less expensive to place the machine in the ground and work the horse on one side for that purpose. I have made a sketch of a kind of shed to be covered with boat plank it is to be 50 feet long and 30 widefind a Carpenter, immediately show him the ground, and the kind of building you want and contract with him for time and price. In 1807, Fultons North River Steamboat (also known as the Clermont) traveled on the Hudson River with passengers from New York City to Albany and back again, a round trip of 300 nautical miles in 62 hours. The letter includes a description of a drawing, which is found on the verso. The drawing depicts the measurements and purpose of a shed intended to house a machine and provide accommodation for a horse on one side. Steam engines did in the early days still often rely on horse power, though the latter quickly became obsolete and became a measurement of the power output of engines horsepower. Additionally, an issue of the Portland Gazette and Maine Advertiser, dated October 8, 1810, is included. This newspaper contains a front-page article that delves into the subject of torpedoes, which Fulton pioneered during his service for the British during the Napoleonic Wars. The letter and newspaper show signs of age, including folds and yellowing, but are in otherwise good condition.

With a handwritten presentation "General Pennypacker from Eleanor" followed by (in the General's hand), "(From Miss Eleanor S. Nicholson -- Philadelphia, December 25th, 1894.)" Galusha Pennypacker (1844-1916) was a Union general during the War Between the States. He is to this day the youngest person to hold the rank of brigadier general in the U.S.Army and the only general too young to vote for the president who appointed him (or anybody else, for that matter.) Only the Marquis de LaFayette was younger (at age 19) when he became Major General in the Continental Army.

[modest shelfwear to book; includes the rare and fragile original acetate dust jacket and both dust jacket flaps; see Notes for additional details and condition information]. The author's second book, often described as an epistolary novel, although strictly speaking it's not, although it does quote quite often from letters exchanged by the principals. The story has to do with "a normal young woman who drifts into prostitution, a victim of uncontrollable circumstances." (Her married lover has been found complicit in the suicide death of his wife and the subsequent death of their child, and has been sentenced to San Quentin.) (The first paragraph of the jacket blurb refers to the author's first novel, "We Too Are Drifting," calling it a "frank and unashamed story of the love of three women" -- which probably explains why they felt compelled to then describe the heroine of this novel as "normal.") The dust jacket on this book is of unusual design, consisting of three elements: (1) a wrap-around paper band, partially printed on foil, bearing the author's name and the book title on the front and a large Random House logo on the rear, and covering about one-third of the book's exterior; (2) a clear (and quite thin) acetate overlay, covering the entire book (although now somewhat shrunken with age); and (3) two normal jacket flaps, printed on foil, the front with a blurb about the book, the rear with the author's portrait photo and a one-paragraph biography. Both flaps appear to have been attached to and covered by the acetate (the rear flap is still attached, but just barely; the front is loose, but effectively held in place by the acetate). NOTE that the acetate is rather badly torn at the rear; I have left it in place, but have also covered the entirety of the book and jacket with a NEW custom-cut protective mylar overlay. (The two flaps are shown in the second scanned image accompanying this listing.) .
