Fine; some rubbing to the binding.
Description
Salisbury [UK]: Not published, 1936. Unique.. Contemporary three-quarter gilt stamped leather.. Fine; some rubbing to the binding.. Folio, measuring about 21 x 13 inches. There are 205 full page mounted specimens and mounted photographs etc.. A massive folio volume of mounted specimens of British grasses representing a life-time of work. The botanist/collector was H Goddard who was a well known authority on British flora in general and grasses in particular. He was the staff botanist for the firm of Dunns Farm Seeds in Salisbury. In 1936, after 50+ years of collecting he presented the collection to the firm. They had it bound with introductory letter press. This is the folio volume being offered here. The preliminaries of the volume contain photos and mounted press clippings from which is derived the following: ' A collection of British grasses, believed to be without equal .... It took most of his life to get it together, and two years ago it was put into a bound volume ... and presented to the firm. A preface to it was written by Prof. R G Stapleton, director of the Welsh plant breeding station, and one of the world's authorities on grasses, who pays it and the author a high tribute. He says," ... in Mr. Goddard's collection they have a valuable possession which will stand for all time ... the specimens are beautifully set-up, correctly named and well arranged. Indeed it is such that could have only been brought together by a botanist of long experience, and by one with infinite patience and with a deep feeling for the beauties of nature." Apart from some minor scuffing the volume is in fine condition with impeccably preserved specimens in tact. Each specimen has the common name, genus, species, place, and date collected noted on the mount. A superb and fascinating monument to scholarship, science, and natural beauty.

One photo with large tear at corner, else excellent.
Description
El Paso, Texas: Underwood & Underwood, 1920. Five photographs measuring 7 ¼ x 9 ½ inches. Typed captions affixed and Underwood & Underwood stamps verso. One photo with large tear at corner, else excellent.. The Texas Rangers, now a statewide investigative law enforcement agency, was formed in 1823 to protect Euro-American settlers in Mexican Texas, and officially established in 1835. Throughout the 19th century, the Rangers, as an irregular military, defended Texians from attacks by Indigenous people as they expelled the Indigenous populations from their homelands, and engaged in conflicts including the Mexican-American and Texas-Indian wars. During this time they also became known for their harsh tactics, including extrajudicial killings. The force became more organized into the 20th century, though the tactics were slow to become more humane, particularly during the Mexican Revolution. Offered here are five press photographs of Texas Rangers from 1920. The Rangers are shown posing with their horses or on horseback—in one, a Ranger shakes hands with a “Mexican Fiscale Captain”, also on horseback—and posing with an infant and its family. Two of the Rangers are identified in the captions as Captain Charles Stephens and Sergeant Hamer, likely Charles F. Stevens and Frank Hamer. Stevens (1868–1929) became captain of Ranger Company B in 1910; in 1929 he was killed in an ambush while working as a Federal Prohibition Agent. Hamer (1884–1955) was an on-again, off-again Ranger best known for his role in the posse that killed Bonnie and Clyde in 1934. Of interest to historians of the Rangers and their public perception early in the 20th century.

Description
iv, 34 pp. Small 8vo (198 x 130 mm.), stitched as issued (spine a little defective). Paris: Delaroche & Bonnefons de la Vialle, 1814. A scarce sale catalogue, with many contemporary pencil annotations recording the prices and buyers. Brisebarre (d. 1813) was an administrator at the Banque de France, and this auction took place at his home on rue Notre-Dame-des-Victoires, no. 38. The present sale was postponed from 5 April to 6 June (hence the two Lugt numbers), probably due to Napoleon’s return from exile; the correct date has been written in on the title-page of our copy. This catalogue describes a total of 182 lots, with a large number of modern French paintings. We find works by Boucher, Bruandet, Bidault, Boissieu, Demarne, Drolling, Hue, Lantara, Mlle. Jenny Legrand, Lespinasse, Meunier, Nicolle, Saint-Martin, Senave, Taunay, etc. Nearly all of the prices and more than half of the buyers’ names have been noted in the margins. A nice copy. Stamp of the Bibliothèque Heim on verso of the first leaf. ❧ Lugt 8497 & 8534.
