Description
Berlin, Germany, 1970. Unbound. Very Good. A collection of 2075 black and white photographs of a U.S. soldier stationed in Germany during Vietnam along with images from his work as a photo technician with the military contractor Raytheon. The photographs, measuring approximately between 2.5” x 3” and 8.5” x 11”, are very good with dried glue on some of the versos and some rolled, and some with captions. A substantial archive of photographs taken by a skill photographer stationed in Berlin, Germany from the mid-1960s to the late-1970s. A majority of the photographs show soldiers working and off-duty around the base. There are also images of a military parade with tanks and military vehicles showing Vietnam War protesters with signs and pictures of President Lyndon B. Johnson, and Queen Elizabeth. There are a great number of photographs around Berlin during Christmas, as well as numerous images of buildings, homes, churches, and bridges including several pictures taken from a helicopter. The compiler was a skilled photographer with many of the images featuring bokeh, light painting, and double exposure effects. There are also several photographic negatives of a young naked man posing in a garden, with both full body shots and close ups of the man’s genitalia and buttocks. Census records reveal that the photographer never married and this may indicate his interest was confined to men. The remaining photos were taken in American with his family, showing his mother, sister, and brother. There is also an interracial couple with their children that was he presumably close to, interacting with them as the couple with his family at a gathering, suggesting a progressive environment. He worked as a photo lab technician for Raytheon, a manufacturer of weapons and military electronics, as well as commercial electronics for the public. Photos from the 1970s showing a Raytheon press event including images of motherboards and specially designed electronics designed for weapons and computers. Most notable is photos of a watch that has a camera hidden within its face. Our research found nothing about a camera watch developed by Raytheon, suggest it was a nonworking proto-type or has remained classified. An extensive archive of photographs taken by a skilled U.S. soldier stationed in Berlin during the Vietnam War and his postwar career with a military contractor.

Description
Vancouver, British Columbia: Heavenly Monkey Editions, 2007. Limited Edition, First Edition Thus. Hardcover. Very good +. Limited Edition, First Edition Thus. Hardcover. Edition limited to 50, of which this is number 10, signed by Charles van Sandwyk to colophon. 13" X 9 3/4". 10 pages, unpaginated. One of 25 copies bound by Claudia Cohen in natural linen over boards, with a printed title label to spine. Faint spot to top edge of text block, stray fibers to cloth, and whiff of cigar scent to pages, else fine. A "love of line" is the inspiration behind this essay about the approach to etching taken by Canadian artist Charles Noel van Sandwyk (born 1966), author of The Parade to Paradise, How to See Fairies, and Sketches from the Dream Island of Birds, and illustrator of the Folio Society editions of The Blue Fairy Book and The Wind in the Willows. Originally penned as the introduction to Twenty-One Years, Twenty-One Prints, a privately issued retrospective limited to just 13 copies, this Heavenly Monkey edition was handprinted in two colors on 250 g Arches Cover paper, comes signed by van Sandwyk, and features the five tipped-in prints of Charles' earliest etchings, plus a new etching created just for this edition and a title page featururing a new drawing pochoir colored by the artist, fittingly of an antelope. The artist writes in his essay: "I have always had a love of line. From the day the first caveman scratched an austere mark on a cave wall, the simple line has remained the distillation of ancient artistic expression. It is the purest and most freely accessible form of communication, and is so effective that several thousand years later, all the charm and finesse of a tastefully rendered antelope on a piece of rock can still be admired and talked about. Just think - simple linework, well preserved, guarantees a visual story for millennia!

Description
Philadelphia: Henszey and Co, 1860. Albumen photograph measuring 3 ½ x 2 ½ inches on mount. Excellent condition with clipped corners and minimal wear. Near Fine. Rachel Wilson Moore, a Quaker from Philadelphia who had strong anti-slavery views, traveled to the Caribbean and South America in the 1860s to try to save her ailing health. She published her journals from the trip under the title Journal of Rachel Wilson Moore, Kept During a Tour to the West Indies and South America, in 1863-64 With Notes from the Diary of her Husband; together with His Memoir. The book described the conditions of the enslaved people in the Caribbean, which she considered to be worse than the conditions in the American South. Offered here is a photograph of Moore, identified on the verso, from the Philadelphia studio Henszey & Co., likely from the late 1860s, showing an elderly Moore in a bonnet. We find no other records of the image.
