Description
[Boston: Printed by Edward Eveleth Powars, 1787. Folio broadside, @11"x 17", printed in two columns. Signed at the end in type by Bowdoin. Untrimmed with generous margins. Several tanned old folds, light wear. Else Very Good. Governor Bowdoin's rare broadside veto attempts to limit the power of popularly elected legislative majorities. His Message vetoes a bill reducing the Governor's salary. The fear of excessive legislative power was a primary concern of the architects of the Constitution. Bowdoin, who ranks "among the founders of the republic" [DAB], argues that the Act is one "to which the Legislative power does not extend." Citing the Massachusetts Constitution, Bowdoin explains "that the Governour should not be under the undue influence of any of the Members of the General Court, by a dependence on them for his support; that he should in all cases act with freedom for the benefit of the public." Description
(Los Angeles): (Little Caesar Press), 1980. Very good plus.. Scarce penultimate issue of Cooper's literary journal featuring photographs from Wojnarowicz's Rimbaud in New York series, as well as selections from his "Monologues From the American Road." For the Rimbaud series, Wojnarowicz made a mask using the famous photograph of the poet at seventeen, then "took a series of photos of his friends wearing it around New York City in the late seventies. Rimbaud rides a densely graffitied subway train; Rimbaud tries to cross an avenue in rush-hour traffic [...] Wojnarowicz, whose artistic career spanned the late seventies to his death, from AIDS, in 1992, at thirty-seven, posed the Rimbaud portraits in spots around New York that were significant in his own life, primarily the places where he had hustled as a child prostitute in his teen years" (Donegan). Other contributors to this issue include James Schuyler, Tom Carey, Tim Dlugos, Ted Greenwald, Michael Lally, Anne Waldman, Eileen Myles, Gerard Malanga, Tom Clark, Isaac Bashevis Singer, and Amy Gerstler. 8.5'' x 5.5''. Original black and white photographic wrappers. 234, [6] pages. Light edgewear, faint spine creasing and traces of soil to back cover.

Ford also notes that the book's 20-year span was, for the S.I., "a period of transtition from relative obscurity to celebrity." The standard reference. Wraps. 8vo. Perfect-bound printed glossy wraps. Description
Catonsville, MD: The Richard Gundry Home, 1910. General wear and toning.. A 8 3/4" x 5 1/2" circular with a black and white image from a photograph of the main building at the Richard Gundry Home, surrounded by foliage. Followed by a brief description of the home, its consulting physicians, and a list of doctors who refer to the home. Advertisements for the home started mentioning the "heretofore know as Harlem Lodge" in or around 1910. Measures 8 3/4" x 5 1/2" The Richard Gundry Home, formally known as the Harlem Lodge, was established in 1891 to treat a variety of mental and nervous disorders, as well as exhaustion or addiction to alcohol or opium. The Home was named in memory of Dr. Richard Gundry, Sr. (1829-1891) and was owned by his wife, Mrs. Mary M. Gundry (1838-1908) and their son Dr. Richard Fitz Harris Gundry (1866-1924). Mary acted as the proprietor with her son as the resident physician until 1898 when Mary retired, and her son gained complete ownership. The Home had five buildings, and it prided itself on its modern conveniences, like steam heating and electricity, as well as its many "attractions to divert the mind" such as its extensive library, bowling alley, conservatory, and orchard. The house had the capacity for 45 patients who were in the course of their treatment expected to engage in various outdoor work, such as gardening or sports.

Description
Novato, CA: Norman Publishing / HistoryofScience.com, 2020. 970pp. plus 22pp. front matter. 2-sided color frontispiece; 624 images. 8.5 x 11 inches. Full cloth; laminated dust-jacket. Sir William Osler (1849-1919) was the most famous and best-loved physician in the English-speaking world during the early twentieth century. Some consider him "the greatest physician of all time" or "the father of modern medicine." More commonly, he is seen as an avatar of humanism in medicine. The 135 contributors to the present volume address four questions, as follows: What was Osler really like, and what did he do? Assembled for the first time in one place are reminiscences and tributes by more than 200 of Osler's contemporaries. His top character strengths, assessed with criteria developed by the Values in Action Classification Project, were kindness, vitality, and love of fellow humans. He used these to energize the medical profession and implement major changes in medical education. What did he write, and who influenced his thinking? Presented here, for the first time in one place, are anal-yses of all of Osler's major non-technical writings along with sketches of those who influenced him. His interests changed over time from character-building and the unity of the medical profession to more fundamental problems of human existence, including whether science will ultimately prove a force for good or evil. How has he been assessed during the century since his death in 1919? Wilbur Davison spoke for many who knew Osler: "We regarded him as perfect." Serious criticisms of Osler began during the closing decades of the twentieth century and crescendoed in 2018 when two Australian physicians argued it is time to unmask him "for the sake of historical truth, the values of science, and the integrity of medicine itself." Presented here are more than 25 criticisms and potential criticisms of Osler, mostly rendered through the lens of "presentism." Readers can use this information to decide whether Osler seems "too good to be true," as has been alleged. Does he still matter, and if so, how? Osler became a "despairing optimist" after World War I, in which he lost his son. He closed his last public address, given in May 1919 on "The Old Humanities and the New Science," with the hope that through the Hippocratic combination of (love of humanity) and (love of science and technology), humankind might somehow find the wisdom () to survive and flourish. Those words became his valedictory, as he died later that year from complications of pneumonia. Osler was voted "the most influential physician in history" in a 2016 survey of North American doctors, but his interests and influence transcend medicine. This volume offers the first comprehensive reference to Osler's personality, character, life, times, and thinking about a broad range of issues relevant to the human condition. .
