Description
East Aurora, NY: The Roycrofters, 1926. First Edition. Near Fine/Fair. First edition. Signed by Elsie Lincoln Benedict on the front free endpaper and inscribed to the former owner in purple ink, "To Mrs. Beatrice Turner, with best regards from one of the authors ("E")." Bound in publisher's quarter purple suede over illustrated paper boards with morocco spine label stamped in gilt; top edge gilt. Near Fine with uneven fading to spine and edges, light wear; silk ribbon book marker creased, light fraying at ends. In tattered remnants of the dust jacket. The power couple's travelogue diary of their travels around the world funded by the money made from Elsie's speaking events and book royalties. The suffragette turned motivational speaker was a pioneer in New Thought texts, laying the foundation for Napoleon Hill and Dale Carnegie. Affectionately coined "The Wonder Woman", and advertised as the world's best known lecturer, Elsie Lincoln Benedict spoke to over three million people in her lifetime. She was a millionaire by age 30 and drew a larger crowd than sitting President Wilson during the 1920 Human Analysis lecture series in Seattle, a testament to her universal appeal. Inscribed to Newport artist and recluse Beatrice Turner (d. 1948). Turner, who died in obscurity, produced thousands of self-portraits in oil throughout her lifetime at the family's nouveau riche, ocean side mansion, Cliffside; scarce signed.

Description
1892. Illustrated. New York: Harper & Brothers, 1892. 2 pp undated ads. Original terra-cotta cloth decorated in black. First American Edition of one of Thomas Hardy's best-known, and most-filmed, novels. This edition (January 1892, 421 pages) excluded many events "more especially addressed to adult readers," including two pivotal ones: Tess's seduction/rape by her cousin Alec, and the baptism and death of her resulting baby. Then the "New and Revised Edition" (the same binding but May 1892, 455 pages) restored these two major events but left the rest of the text bowdlerized. Finally, a "New and Completely Revised Edition" (again the same binding, but 1893, 457 pages) restored the text, more or less, back to that of the three-volume 1891 English edition. An attractive Margaret Armstrong-designed binding, this copy is in near-fine condition (very little wear, but spine gilt dull). Purdy p. 76; Gullans & Espey 112.

Description
New York, Pennsylvania, and Ohio, 1923. This 8" x 6" album contains 37 b/w photographs, each measuring approximately 4.75" x 3". The crisp, well-composed snapshots are chronologically arranged and neatly glued to the album pages. Most have been captioned in white, but much of the writing has faded. In addition to the rugged workmen, equipment, and environment of 1920s oil fields, these images show the men's Model T Ford, roadside tent camping, and a big campsite at Cleveland's Euclid Beach Park. Ohio became home to one of the first oil booms in the United States in the 1860s after a blacksmith, William Jeffrey, drilled a successful well in Trumbull County. The discovery of oil near Woodville in 1892 started a boom that lasted until 1905 by which time the area was mostly drained although drilling and pumping continued in a few of the area's fields. A historically valuable visual record of life as a traveling roughneck in the eastern oil fields. Rather scarce. At the time of this listing, no other Ohio oil field photograph albums are for sale in the trade. There are no auction records for similar materials listed at ABPC or the Rare Book Hub. OCLC shows no similar albums held in institutional collections.

Description
[Worcester, Massachusetts?], 1920. Fine; one small tear to upper left-hand corner, minor toning.. Small broadside (11" by 5.25", verso blank) promoting a lecture by a physician, Dr. Dart, "Upon the Subject of Dirt & Contagion, at the Baptist Church. He will show you what causes Diphtheria, Fevers, and all contagious diseases; that myriads of Organic Germs causing disease are contained in the air we breathe, the water we drink and the soil upon which we tread." A fine example of ephemera promoting public awareness about contagion, public health, and hygiene at the beginning of the twentieth century. Date estimate based on Diphtheria peaked in 1921, with 206,000 cases in the US.
