Description
Copenhagen: Philibert, 1760. Contemporary half gilt calf over boards, red edges; light toning, but otherwise a good copy in genuine condition. Bookseller’s label from Librairie des Sciences Occultes in Amsterdam. First edition of this groundbreaking psychological work on the human soul by “one of the fathers of modern biology” (DSB). Bonnet here examines the relationship between the mind and body and extrapolates on the nature of the soul by separating the individual faculties of human animation: nerves, smell, memory, free will, desire, language, etc. He provides commentary on the senses individually and asserts that sensation is the foundation of all human faculty. His theories set forth here follow the work of Étienne Bonnot de Condillac, who was inspired by John Locke. Bonnet (1720-1793), considered one of the fathers of modern biology, is best known for his discovery of parthenogenetic reproduction. His controversial theory of preformation, reinforced by Haller’s arguments, supported the proposition that every female individual contains within her the “germs” of all the creatures that originate from her, the one generation within the other. He was one of the first naturalists to investigate photosynthesis and was an early exponent of experimental entomology. His evolutionary theories dealing with natural catastrophes foreshadowed those of Lamarck and Cuvier and were diligently studied and admired by contemporary biologists. Caillet 1402; DSB II: 286-287.
