New York: Nelson & Phillips, 1876 Salesman's sample demonstrating two binding options: "Fine English cloth, black and gold stamp, beveled boards" for $5 and "Full Gilt Turkey Morocco" for $7.50.. Publisher's binding with black leather over upper board and red cloth over lower board and spine (demonstrating the two different binding options). . 6 x 9 in. . Half- and full-page illustrations throughout. Last eight pages blank except for heading reading "Subscriber's Names / Residence / Style of Binding. Slight rubbing to cloth. Strip of black spine leather titled in gilt mounted to upper pastedown and strip of red cloth titled in gilt mounted to lower pastedown (corresponding with the two binding options). Some offsetting to flyleaves. Ink ownership signature ("Miss Hicks from Uncle G."), dated 1880, to preliminary blank. Some foxing. A very good copy of this rare advertsing sample book, issued for itinerant salesme.. The last three pages describe The Lord's Land to the buyer: "Over two years have been spent upon the mechanical and artistic part of it. The illustrations, type, etc., have involved an outlay of over $10,000…The book is a Royal Octavo, printed on beautifully tinted linen paper, clear, open type, made expressly for this work, 744 pages, and 115 new and original illustrations…The Lord's Land can only be obtained through our regularly authorized Canvassing Agents, and is sold only by subscription. In this connection the Publishers beg leave to state that it will not be sold in our own or any other bookstore with our knowledge and consent.
