Description
Fulingo: Tipografia Tomassini, 1843. Small 8vo. 170 x 120 mm. (6 3/4 x 4 1/2 inches). Original printed wrappers; spine discolored, otherwise sound and not unattractive. Rare pamphlet, published in the provincial city of Foligno near Assisi and Perugia, that advocates for the establishment of a public libraries. The pamphlet is organized in two parts. The first describes the benefits of public libraries and the moral, civil and economic impact institutions of knowledge have on local citizenry. The second part is more pragmatic. The author, thought to be Giuseppe Bragazzi, discusses the how easy it is to create a place filled with books that the entire community can use for study and local activities. Giuseppe Bragazzi, a teacher associated with the seminary in Fulingo, was the author of several philosophical works, which focus on its application to the public good. In 1830 he wrote a work on the history of philosophy, citing examples of how students can take the ideas of the great thinkers and apply them to everyday life. This was followed in 1834 by a study of logic and it use in public discourse and in 1847 he produced a work using philosophy as an organizing principle in creating a better society.  ICCU cites two copies of Delle pubbliche biblioteche in Italy (Torino and Venice) and only a digital copy is cited in OCLC. All of his other works are rare and know in Italy in only a few copies. None are cited in the United States. (114) .

A fine copy preserved in its original box
Description
Winchester, MA: The Lucky Dog Press, 1945. First edition, one of 225 copies printed, bound and signed by the author. A fine copy preserved in its original box. 8vo (19 x 12.8 cm). Seven marbled specimens tipped in. Quarter red cloth, marbled boards, printed paper label on front cover, differing marbled endpapers. In the original decorated paper pull-off box (one joint split). Written for beginners to fill a void in available treatises on marbling at the time. A note on the specimens at the end states that Thrift varied the samples used, "and so specific details are impractical." Each copy, therefore, is in some way unique given the differing complements of paper samples. With an ALS by the author's wife loosely inserted, 28 January 1950, to Laura Young: "My husband Tim Thrift passed away Apr-12-1947. I still have a very few of his M.M in M.P. left. Will be pleased to send you one – at $5.00 the regular price he received – it's a practical treatise on marbling and there is a big field for that." See: Emily Pazar, The Progress of the Art: Paper Marbling in the United States, 1880-1950, pp. 75-78.
