Responding to "a GREAT number of PETITIONS, praying for the ABOLITION of the SLAVE TRADE," the House of Commons resolved itself into a Committee of the Whole, on motion of Mr. Wilberforce, "to consider the circumstances of the African Slave Trade." Wilberforce opened the debate with an eloquent and lengthy speech, printed in full at pages 4 through 48. He is answered by Mr. Baillie, who has "passed the most active part of my life in the West Indies, having a considerable property, both in land and Negroes," and reminds the House that the slave trade is essential to England's interests.
