Description
Albany, New York, 1885. Card. Very good. This blank back, 5.25” x 3” trade card advertises “Acorn” Collars and Cuffs manufactured by S. L. Munson of Albany, New York. It was sent through the mail to E. R. Birinington of Danielsonville, Connecticut. The card is in nice shape, and it is franked with a 1-cent Franklin stamp canceled by an undated Albany postmark. The card, on which a November calendar is printed, features a family of six seated around a dining room table with the father, presumably S. L. Munson, addressing his wife and children as he begins carving a large turkey: “We owe thanks to the trade for an enormously increased business.” . Congress approved a request from Postmaster General John Creswell to print and issue one-cent postal cards in June of 1872. The law also allowed privately printed postcards, known today as “pioneer” cards, but they were twice as expensive to mail, and typically had imprints like “Correspondence” or “Souvenir Card” printed on the reverse. In this case, the Acorn collar company took double advantage of the post card law; first by using it to send this advertising postcard through the mail and also by slipping it through the post office at half the required rate. In 1885, the Ace collar and cuff company apparently issued a series of calendar trade cards. We have sold a similar postally used Acorn card celebrating Christmas, and other examples, usually damaged, occasionally pop-up on .

Boston, MA: David R. Godine, Publisher, 2017. cloth, dust jacket. Angling. 4to. cloth, dust jacket. 242 pages. A Selection of Rare Books, Manuscripts, Journals, Diaries, Photograph Albums, & Ephemera on the Subject of Atlantic Salmon Fishing from the Collection of Charles B. Wood III. First edition limited to 1100 copies, of which this is one of 1000 numbered copies bound thus. Fine in fine jacket. Beatifully illustrated in full color. Introduction by Henry Wessells. "Every activity generates its own literature, but few outdoor sports have generated as much enthusiasm and literature - some of it incredibly esoteric, most of it interesting, and some of it downright irresistible - as salmon fishing. It is not an inexpensive sport. All salmon demand clean, fast-moving, fresh water, and the Atlantic salmon, which often returns as many as five times to the same rivers to spawn and can attain weights of over sixty pounds, have seen their southern runs entirely eliminated by dams, pollution, and commercial fishing. What remains are the few closely guarded rivers of Canada, Iceland, Great Britain, and Scandinavia all of them relatively inaccessible. All of them beautiful. All of them expensive to acces and fish. Charles Wood, a distinguished antiquarian bookseller, has been pursuing these fish for decades, and he has also built up what is probably the most extensive collection about the sport in private hands. For this selective bibliography he has chosen 230 of what he considers the most interesting titles (some of them so rare that they might be encountered only once in a lifetime) and arranged them by country and publication date. All titles are illustrated. What makes the book a real pleasure is the knowledge he brings to bear not only as a bookman, but also as a reader and a fisherman. He knows the rivers; in many cases he knows the people who fished them and wrote the books. And he knows what qualifies as quality, whether it is an elusive and fugitive mimeographed account of an excursion to a Norwegian river or a deluxe full leather quarto containing an original salmon fly. So this is no dry, pedantic list of famous books, but rather a fascinating and illuminating journey into a world of piscatorial lore, adventure, and description." Contents include: Foreword by Henry Wessells; Introduction by the author; Salmon fishing: Norway; Salmon fishing: England, Scotland and Ireland; Salmon fishing: Canada; Salmon clubs; Books with actual flies in them; Photograph albums; Manuscripts, proofs, & journals; Miscellany; Bibliography; Author index; Provenance index.
