Description
London: Longman Hurst, Rees, Orme, and Brown, 1820. First edition. Three twelvemo volumes (6 13/16 x 4 in; 173 x 103 mm). [4. blank], [2], 227, [5, blank]; [4, blank], [2], 261, [5, blank]; [4, blank], [2], 252, [4, blank] pp. Bound in contemporary quarter calf over marbled boards ruled in gilt. Spines with four raised bands ruled and lettered in gilt, marbled endpapers, marbled edges. Joints a little rubbed but sound. Small, almost invisible 19th century blank library label on each spine. Bookplate of the Loyal Alyth Public Library on front paste down of both volumes. A few of the library's inked stamp to some leaves, mainly blanks. A very good set of a difficult to find title. This book was, up until quite recently, attributed to Mrs. Ross, the "obscure but remarkable author " (Feminist Companion to Literature in English) of thirteen anonymously written, respected novels of the Romantic Movement, which produced "an influential generation of women writers, including M. Wollstonecraft, D. Wordsworth, M. Shelley and the Bronte sisters (Oxford Companion to English Literature). Recent research, however, has firmly established that six of these thirteen novels, each possessing a "confident-seeming literary style, and broad evangelical emphasis" (Garside) were, in fact, written by Mrs. Elizabeth B. Lester, of whom little is known. Garside, Raven and Schöwerling 1820: 45. Wolff 5974 (sub Ross). Garside, Mrs. Ross and Elizabeth B. Lester: New Atributions, Cardiff Corvey: Reading the Romantic Text 2 (June 1998).

Description
London: Longman, hurst, rees, orme, and brown, 1818. Contemporary calf, boards with blind-stamped borders, spine label; top margin trimmed, ownership signature on title page lost except for the word “surgeon,” annotations on pp. 33-34. First edition in English, translated by R.H. Black, first printed under the title Secours à donner aux personnes empoisonnées ou asphyxiées in Paris in 1816. This is a comprehensive guide on poisons and the dangers that can ensue when one is not particularly aware of their surroundings. Orfila defines poisons by dividing them into classes, and groups them among elemental acids, narcotics, tobacco and liquor, mushrooms, and putrefactive poisons from snakes, insects, tarantulas, and dolphins. Along with describing the poisons themselves, Orfila provides an education on a variety of poison-related subjects such as antidotes, signs of madness in dogs, treatment of frozen limbs, and asphyxia caused by liquor, drowning, hanging and strangulation, and how to tell if your wine has been poisoned. Tips are also provided for the prevention of the fatal effects of drinking cold water and what to do when you’ve been struck by lightning. Of particular interest is Orfila’s discussion of the means of treating infants, with descriptions of asphyxia of newborns, apoplexy of children, and how to deal with children born in a state of apparent death. The author stresses the importance of distinguishing between those who look dead and those are actually dead. He includes precautions to be observed to avoid confounding the Dead with the Living, as well as “Directions for the treatment of persons apparently dead.” Orfila (1787-1853) was a Spanish chemist who is considered the founder of toxicology. He pioneered the use of forensic toxicology in criminal trials. Along with being a physician in the service of King Louis XVIII and the president of the National Medical Academy of France, Orfila was also a musically trained choir singer who used his talents to strengthen his relationships and gain connections with those in high French society. A very practical and essential guide for anyone looking to survive the dangers of being alive.

Description
[Rio de Janeiro]: Nova Fronteira Memoria Brasileira, 1980. Hardcover. Near Fine. Folio size, 124 pp., inscribed by Claudio Arrau. A little-known work on the great coffee plantations of the nineteenth century in the area around Rio de Janeiro. Coffee first started to appear in the area around 1760, and by 1822 there were plantations in the area with more than fifty thousand coffee plants, with massive tracts of rainforest being cleared first from the vicinity of Rio and later Sao Paulo for coffee growing. The families owning the plantations built huge homes, some of them almost small castles - one of which, the Parque Sao Clemente, had ceilings so beautiful that special reclining chairs were installed so that they could be better admired. This book explores those fazendas, both inside and out, to provide a glimpse into this glittering past. The text of the book is in Portuguese, and an accompanying softcover book has the English translation. This volume was previously owned by Claudio Arrau (1903-1991), a Chilean pianist widely considered one of the greatest pianists of the twentieth century. ___DESCRIPTION: Quarter tan cloth with black paper boards, pictorial paste-down of one of the plantation houses inset into the front board with titlte in silver, brown lettering on the spine, decorative endpapers of stylised palm trees, title page in red and black with a small tipped-in photograph, tipped-in colour photographs throughout, drawn map towards the rear of the book showing the location of the fazendas along the Rio Paraiba do Sul; folio size (13.75" by 10.5"), pagination: [i-iii] [1-2] 3-111 [112-121], inscribed by Claudio Arrau "Rio de Janeiro 1981" on the first flyleaf. Please note the text is in Portuguese. Accompanying English translation in English a softcover booklet in black paper wraps, stapled at the spine, with gold lettering and publisher's device on the front cover, 19 pp. In a slipcase covered in green paper, with stylised palm tree pattern and a pictorial paper label on the front board. ___CONDITION: Volume is near fine, with clean boards, a strong, square text block with solid hinges, straight corners with no rubbing, the interior is clean and bright with the only prior owner markings in both volumes being the name written of Claudio Arrau as noted above, and each of the tipped-in photographs is in fine condition; some light, stray soil marks on the spine and a small, old dampstain on the bottom edge of the spine, a few of the final pages have some minor rippling from the old damp, else fine. The accompanying English translation is also near fine, clean overall, with a few shallow creases on the wraps. The slipcase is very good, strong and sturdy, clean overall, some minor overall edge wear, and it appears to have gotten wet at some point as the back is warped and the paper coverings are rippled. ___POSTAGE: International customers, please note that additional postage may apply as the standard does not always cover costs; please contact us for details. ___Swan's Fine Books is pleased to be a member of the ABAA, ILAB, and IOBA and we stand behind every book we sell.
