Description
London: Edward Moxon, 1842. First Edition. Hardcover. Very Good. Original brown cloth with a leaf of ads at the end followed by an additional collective title page and half-title page, allowing the book to form the seventh and final volume of the 1836-7 edition of Wordsworth's POETICAL WORKS. Wordsworth's last collection of new work, and somewhat scarce. This is a Presentation copy INSCRIBED by the poet on the front pastedown: "Herbert Hill/from/the Author/April 1842." Herbert Hill married Robert Southey's daughter, Bertha, in 1839 and was a neighbor of Wordsworth's living with his wife in John Fleming's cottage in Rydal. Hill served as tutor for Matthew Arnold. Both Hill and Wordsworth attended Southey's funeral in March 1843 after which Wordsworth was selected to replace Southey as England's Poet Laureate. Rebacked some time ago with nearly all of the original spine but for the tips retained. An engraved portrait of the author is laid down on the verso of the front free endpaper.

Description
London: Chatto and Windus, 1883. New edition. Octavo (7 1/4 x 4 1/4 in; 180 x 116 mm). xvi, 392 pp. Nineteen black and white plates with tissue guards, sixty-five black and white text illustrations. Bound by Kelly & Sons ca. 1900 in an unusual Kelliegram (thus signed) binding of full crimson crushed morocco with gilt-decorated frame to covers, and multi-colored morocco inlaid portrait to spine. One raised band. Turn-ins with gilt corner pieces. All edges gilt. Green silk end leaves. Original red cloth covers and spine bound in at rear. With the bookplate of John J. Raskob. This biography celebrates the life and work of George Cruikshank. Cruikshank was and remains the most celebrated caricaturist and book illustrator of the 19th century. The previous owner, the noted book collector John Jakob Raskob, was a financial executive and businessman for DuPont and General Motors, and the builder of the Empire State Building. This unusual design makes for a surprising example of a Kelliegram binding. Known for their highly detailed pictorial inlaid color leather bindings, the London-based firm Kelly and Sons was one of the longest running in the trade. Started in 1770 by John Kellie, various family members continued the business into the early twentieth century. Charming, beautiful, and occasionally whimsical, the inlaid designs were often inspired by in-text illustrations.

Description
New York: McClure, Phillips and Co, 1906. First Edition. O. Henry’s second book, first printing (though the prefatory misprint “lony” is often cited as an issue point, it is not, since all first editions have the same misprint). Original red cloth. Fine condition. Reference: B. A. L. 16271. Ex–Mrs. J. Insley Blair (the great Natalie Blair) with her small leather “Blairhame” bookplate on the inside cover of the chemise in an old half morocco slipcase, she had made for the book. According to the author’s prefatory note, the title (The Four Million) is in opposition to the widely believed assertion that there were only 400 New Yorkers who were “worth noticing.” The author feels that all “four million” are worthy of notice, and uses these tales to make his point. The Four Million’s 25 very short stories comprise O. Henry’s most sought–after volume, primarily because it includes his best–known tale, The Gift of the Magi – at the end of which the author reflects, “And here I have lamely related to you the uneventful chronicle of two foolish children in a flat who most unwisely sacrificed for each other the greatest treasures of their house. But in a last word to the wise, let it be said that of all who give gifts, these two were the wisest.”.

Description
London: Printed by W. Nicol and Sold by Payne and Foss, 1827. 4to.  250 x 200 mm.; [9 ¾ x 8 inches].  viii, 536 , [2] pp.  Illustrated with a frontispiece portrait of the author and four plates on two folding leaves, bound at the end.  Modern green morocco spine over green cloth, spine with title in gilt and embossed in blind, all edges gilt.  Preliminary leaves a bit foxed, otherwise a very handsome copy.  Bookplate of Thomas Philip Earl de Gray on front pastedown; embossed stamp of Northwestern University Med. Library on p. v. First edition.  Study of the Italian school of engravers from 1424 and the work of Maso Finiguerra and ending in 1560 and descriptions of the engravings by Dominico Pelligreni.  It is based on a collection of prints formed by Cumberland, and just before his death he gave them to the Royal Academy and the British Museum.  The goal of the publication was to describe the prints in his possession that he has studied and described and to create a list of prints which he is does not own and which is hoping to purchase.  In the process he hoped "to obtain the most complete enumeration of all the brilliant stars comprising this interesting hemisphere of art."  Included in his descriptions are engravings by Baldini, Botticello, Mantegna, Nicoletto di Modena, Marcantonio Raimondi, Gioseffo Porta, Francesco Marcolini, Antonio di Trento, Cesare Vecellio, and Andrea Andriani to name a few.  On the verso of the final leaf is a bibliography of Cumberland's published works. George Cumberland (1754-1848) was an amateur artist, print collector, print maker, writer; lifelong patron of William Blake and supporter of the artists John Flaxman and Thomas Stothard. He was the author of Anecdotes of the Life of Julio Bonafoni, with a Catalogue of his Engravings, 1793, based on a collection of prints he collected and sold to the British Museum in 1820 for £397.  He began is study of Italian prints while living in Rome in 1788 and upon returning to England he began his collecting and patronage having received his inheritance at the death of his father. For biographical information and Cumberland's relations with William Blake see Bentley, G.E. The Stranger from Paradise: A Biography of William Blake. New Haven: Yale University Press, 2003.  G. E.
