Description
London: Printed for Benj. Motte, at the Middle Temple-Gate in Fleet-street, 1726. Full Description: [SWIFT, Jonathan]. Travels into Several Remote Nations of the World. By Captain Lemuel Gulliver. In four parts. London: Printed for Benj. Motte, at the Middle Temple-Gate in Fleet-street, 1726. First edition, Teerink's state AA. With all AA points for both volumes. Four parts in two small octavo volumes (7 1/2 x 4 3/4 inches; 190 x 120 mm.). xii, 148, [6], 164; [6], 154, [8], 199, [1] pp. Complete with engraved frontispiece portrait of Gulliver in the second state, with the inscription "Captain Lemuel Gulliver of Redriff. Ætat. suæ LVIII." around the oval the the tablet bearing a Latin inscription (printed on paper with vertical chain-lines), Five engraved maps (two for Part III and one for each of the other Parts), and an engraved plate of symbols in Part III. With engraved head and tail pieces, and initials. Uniformly bound in contemporary full paneled calf. Without any restoration. Boards tooled in blind. Spines numbered in gilt. All edges speckled red. Joints are starting but holding strong. Some minor chipping to heads of spines. Boards with a bit of spotting and rubbing. Previous owner's armorial bookplate on front pastedown of each volume. Still overall very good. A handsome and complete copy of this seminal first edition. Gulliver's Travels, to use the popular title, is one of the greatest satires in the English language-or any language, for that matter. It was an immediate success, which accounts in part for its bibliographical complexity, and has been hailed as a book that "would last as long as the language, because it described the vices of man in all nations" (D.N.B.). "Gulliver's Travels has given Swift an immortality beyond temporary fame...All those who had been fascinated by the realism and vivid detail of Defoe's Robinson Crusoe were captivated again, even though they knew that Gulliver must be fiction. The brilliance and thoroughness with which his logic and invention work out the picquancies of scale involved by the giant human among the Lilliputians, and then by a minikin Gulliver among the Brobdingnagians, ran away with the author's original intention. Gulliver's Travels has achieved the final apotheosis of a satirical fable, but it has also become a tale for children. For every edition designed for the reader with an eye to the historical background, twenty have appeared, abridged or adapted, for readers who care nothing for the satire and enjoy it as a first-class story" (Printing and the Mind of Man). Grolier, 100 English, 42. Hubbard, pp. 15-17. Printing and the Mind of Man 185. Rothschild 2104. Teerink 290. HBS 69430. $20,000.

Description
St. Louis: John Stark & Son, 1902. Folio sheet music, illustrated color pictorial cover. 5 pp. (including cover). Early issue dedicated to “James Brown and His Mandolin Club.” A notably bright and well-preserved example with strong color and only light edge wear; small chips to corners of second and third leaves with no loss to printed portion, very good overall, an unusually attractive copy of one of the most famous publications of the ragtime era. Very good.. First edition of Scott Joplin’s celebrated ragtime composition, issued during the composer’s most productive period with his principal publisher, John Stark of St. Louis. The cover illustration depicts a sharply dressed performer stepping through a theatrical doorway while a curious onlooker peers from below. Joplin (1868–1917), often called the “King of Ragtime,” was the most influential composer associated with the style, and his partnership with Stark produced many of the era’s defining works, including “Maple Leaf Rag” (1899), “The Ragtime Dance” (1902), and “The Entertainer.” Though enormously popular when published, the piece would achieve even greater fame during the twentieth-century ragtime revival, especially after its prominent use in The Sting (1973), where Marvin Hamlisch’s adaptation of Joplin’s music introduced the composition to a new international audience. Like many of Joplin’s works, “The Entertainer” is structured as a ragtime two-step, combining the syncopated rhythms of African American musical traditions with forms derived from the late nineteenth-century dance repertoire. The dedication to James Brown and His Mandolin Club reflects the widespread popularity of mandolin orchestras and amateur musical societies during the ragtime era, which frequently performed arrangements of current dance compositions. Few pieces of American popular music have enjoyed the enduring recognition of “The Entertainer.” We find no other first edition copies on the market at the time of writing.

Description
Bolinas, California: [No publisher stated] Printed by Mallette Dean, 1957. Limited Edition. Softcover. Near fine. One of 150 copies, unnumbered, octavo size, unpaginated [126 pp.]. A deceptively simple book of poetry by three SF Bay Area poets and showing a decided beat-era influence (Ginsberg's "Howl" having been published just two years prior). With poems by William Benson ("Bill") Buck (1934-1970), an American writer born into a wealthy Marin County family; Jane Hamner Buck, who lived with Bill Buck "as husband and wife" in Bolinas, California, for six years; and Wallace Look, of whom we can only find mentioned that he was a friend of Jane's and a librarian at the CSU campus in Arcata. Since the book is showing as having been published in Bolinas, where Bill and Jane lived for a time, we can only surmise this was a project by the three friends to have their poetry published (each of the three has their own section), and asked Mallette Dean, whom Bill may have known since they both lived in Marin, to print the book for them. (Harold) Mallette Dean (1907-1975) was a well-known and highly regarded San Francisco bay area printer and illustrator whose woodcuts delight and entrance. Beginning his career in 1935 with the illustrious Grabhorn Press (for whom he worked for fifteen years), and later on with the equally renowned Allen Press, Mallette eventually opened his own printing press in Fairfax, Marin County where he published his own books, most of which were adorned with his own illustrations. ___DESCRIPTION: Blue paper wraps, front pastedown cream label with black lettering and yellow decoration, fore-edge uncut, title page with a black and gold woodcut illustration by Mallette Dean, the sectional title page for each poet has their name with another woodcut illustration in gold, colophon with the printer's device for Mallette Dean; octavo size (9 1/2" by 6 1/2"), unpaginated with sixty-three printed leaves, limited edition of 150 copies, unnumbered, printed by Mallett Dean in Fairfax, California. ___CONDITION: Near fine overall; the interior is clean and bright and the volume is free of prior owner markings; the wraps are mostly clean (one small spot on the spine) with minor overall edgewear, particularly at the head of the spine, one short closed tear at the upper front joint. ___CITATION: Hawk, no. 344. ___POSTAGE: International customers, please note that additional postage may apply as the standard does not always cover costs; please inquire for details. ___Swan's Fine Books is pleased to be a member of the ABAA, ILAB, and IOBA and we stand behind every book we sell. New York: Atria Books, 2025. First Edition. Hardcover. Near fine/near fine. First Edition. Hardcover. Signed by Malala Yousafzai to signature page specially bound-in by the publisher. Stated first edition, with full number line indicating first printing. 9 3/8" X 6 1/4". 305pp. Very light shelfwear to dust jacket. Bound in purple paper over boards, with spine lettered in silver. Light shelfwear to binding, else fine. Binding is firm, tight, and sound. Pages are clean, bright, and unread. A highly presentable signed first edition of this newest memoir by education activist and the youngest-ever Nobel laureate, Malala Yousafzai. ABOUT THIS BOOK: This is not the story you think you know. It's the one I've been waiting to tell. Thrust onto the public stage at fifteen years old after the Taliban's brutal attack on her life, Malala Yousafzai quickly became an international icon known for bravery and resilience. But away from the cameras and crowds, she spent years struggling to find her place in an unfamiliar world. Now, for the first time ever, Malala takes us beyond the headlines in Finding My Way-a vulnerable, surprising memoir that buzzes with authenticity, sharp humor, and tenderness. Finding My Way is a story of friendship and first love, of anxiety and self-discovery, of trying to stay true to yourself when everyone wants to tell you who you are. In it, Malala traces her path from high school loner to reckless college student to a young woman at peace with her past. Through candid, often messy moments like nearly failing exams, getting ghosted, and meeting the love of her life, Malala reminds us that real role models aren't perfect-they're human. In this astonishing memoir, Malala reintroduces herself to the world, sharing how she navigated life as someone whose darkest moments threatened to define her narrative-while seeking the freedom to find out who she truly is. Finding My Way is an intimate look at the life of a young woman taking charge of her destiny-and a deeply personal testament to the strength it takes to be unapologetically yourself. (Publisher).
