Description
Bologna: Constantini Pisarri & Jacobi Philippi Primodi [Constantino Pisarri & Giacomo Filippo Primodi], 1756. FIRST EDITION. Complete with folding table. Decorated frontispiece, woodcut capitals, head- and tailpieces. Contemporary parchment-covered boards with paper spine; minor spotting but otherwise a wonderful unsophisticated copy with two ownership signatures on the title page. First edition. An important and foundational work on algebraic series and differential equations. Riccati’s work, though less acclaimed and known, preceded that of Euler and Leibniz. Venetian mathematician and physicist Vincenzo Riccati(1707-1775) taught mathematics for thirty years at the Collegio di San Franceso Saverio of Bologna. His main research continued the work of his father, Jacopo Riccati, in mathematical analysis. He studied mathematics in Bologna before entering the Jesuit Order. Throughout his career, he edited and published his father’s work with the help of his brother, Giordano Riccati. Frequently collaborating with Girolamo Saladini, Riccati is best known for his groundbreaking work on hyperbolic functions and differential equations. Outside of mathematics, he practiced hydraulic engineering and designed essential flood control systems throughout the Veneto (see DSB, XI, pp. 401-402). Riccardi, Biblioteca matematica, 365.14.

Description
Rectangular card, printed on one side only, mailed. Washington D.C.: Max Protetch, [1974]. Very rare invitation to Buren’s first and only solo presentation with Max Protetch. This example was mailed to the famous Claire S. Copley Gallery on La Cienega Boulevard. The card bears two addresses for Protetch’s gallery, one in D.C. and the other on Spring Street in New York; we believe this exhibition took place at the former. In excellent condition. ❧ Not in Michael Lailach, ed., Printed Matter: Die Sammlung Marzona in der Kunstbibliothek (2005).
