Description
1670. Cum Commentariis C.G. Bacheti…& observationibus D.P. de Fermat…Accessit Doctrinae Analyticae inventum novum, collectum ex variis eiusdem D. de Fermat Epistolis. Large engraved vignette on title, several finely engraved headpieces & initials, & a few woodcut diagrams in the text. 6 p.l., 64, 341, 48 pp., one leaf of errata. Folio, cont. speckled calf (carefully rebacked with the orig. spine laid-down, light browning as usual, two corners discretely repaired), spine richly gilt. Toulouse: B. Bosc, 1670. First edition, and a very fine and fresh copy. This edition is the first to contain Fermat’s observations on the Arithmetica of Diophantus, the first systematic treatise on algebra; it also contains (on H3r) the first statement of the celebrated “Last Theorem” which Fermat originally wrote by hand in the margins of his copy of Bachet’s edition of Diophantus (1620). This theorem is the most famous problem in mathematics and remained unsolved for over 325 years until its recent solution by Andrew Wiles. But it should be remembered that Wiles was able to resort to sophisticated 20th-century techniques not available to Fermat. The exact form of Fermat’s proof, if indeed he had a genuine one, thus remains one of the great unsolved puzzles of mathematics. The 1670 edition was published posthumously by Fermat’s son Clement Samuel. It is based on his father’s annotated copy of the Bachet edition of 1621 and contains a major part of Fermat’s work on number theory, a branch of mathematics that he virtually created. A nice copy with the extremely rare errata leaf. ❧ Smith, Rara Arithmetica, p. 348.

Description
Philadelphia: The Athletic Publishing Company, 1888 First edition. Publisher's yellow wrappers, lettered in black. Near fine, with light toning to spine, very light soiling to wrappers, black marker line to fore edge of text block, light chipping to spine ends, top left corner of rear wrapper missing and some tears to top corners of a few pages at back of book, small closed tear to bottom of rear panel, and gift inscription to verso of frontis. Overall, an exceptional copy of a very scarce book. In Base-Ball: How to Become a Player, baseball Hall of Famer John Montgomery Ward explains the history, theory, and positions of the game. The book is notable for being one of the first instructional baseball books. As a player, Ward's most notable achievement was pitching the second perfect game in major league history in 1880. Yet his playing career was just a one part of his illustrious baseball career - he was also a manager, executive, author, and union organizer. A passionate supporter of player rights, Ward spearheaded the creation of the first sports labor union, the Brotherhood of Professional Base Ball Players, in 1885, primarily as a reaction to the NL and AA's restrictive reserve clause. Ward also founded the Players' League in 1890, as a way of combatting the reserve clause, but the league only lasted a year. . First Edition. Original Wraps. Near Fine.

Description
[Various locations in Texas and Mexico, 1901. Good plus.. Fourteen leaves, illustrated with twenty-seven black-and-white photographs inserted one per page into square picture windows. Oblong small octavo. Contemporary black textured cloth photograph album, string tied. Minor staining to boards, about two-thirds of rear cover clipped away. Minor wear to photos, short closed tears to a few photos. An engrossing collection of vernacular photographs capturing the locals, the sights and sounds, and some architectural landmarks in San Antonio, El Paso, Ysleta, and other locations in Texas, as well as scenes in Juarez and Chihuahua, Mexico. The photographs are enhanced with informative manuscript captions on the album pages, identifying subjects, locations, and often including the date. The photos feature two women and two children posed outside the "Oldest Adobe in Ysletta, Texas," an elevated view of "El Paso, Texas from where you can see three states - Mexico, New Mexico, and Texas," two views of the San Antonio "Insane Asylum," a "Mexican baby in street of Juarez, Mexico," a "Mexican band in Alameda" in Mexico City, a "Street scene in Juarez, Mexico," three scenes of a bullfight in Chihuahua, and more. The album also includes images of missions, cathedrals, churches, the San Antonio post office, and two pictures of a burro (one in Chihuahua and another "On the road from El Paso to Ysleta, Texas." The human subjects pictured here include Mr. and Mrs. Harris and their home in Ysleta, Mrs. Elliott, Mr. George Marshall and Miss Mattie Marshall in Marshall, Texas. The named subjects should assist researchers in placing the album in larger context. A wonderful selection of turn-of-the-20th-century images from southern Texas and northern Mexico.

Description
Philadelphia: King & Baird, 1862. Original printed yellow wrappers [lightly dusted], with "Resps. of Author" written on front wrapper. 60pp. Very Good. There are a number of Burlingtons in the United States; this one is in New Jersey. Wall lived and practiced law there. His opposition to the Lincoln Administration resulted in his arrest and incarceration for several weeks. The New York Times reported on 11 September 1861. "There is great excitement here, in consequence of a rumor that Col Jas. Wall has been arrested and taken to Fort Lafayette, charged with secession proclivities." This did not deter New Jersey Democrats from electing him to the U.S. Senate for a brief term in early 1863. Wall's Address deplores "sectional fanaticism" and urges support for compromise and "the Union as it is." The American nation was established "for purposes infinitely higher" than the extension or abolition of slavery. His lengthy analysis of the Constitutional Convention demonstrates that the nation was founded, not on coercion, but in a spirit of compromise and due respect for the diverse interests of the sovereign States of the Union. As of May 2025 OCLC records ten locations for the Burlington printing of this Address, but facsimiles only for our Philadelphia printing of the same year. Priority is unknown. Bartlett and the Library Company record both, with the Burlington printing in 22 pages. Bartlett 5639. LCP 10917. Not in Sabin, Marke, or Harv. Law Cat.

This book was often referenced in occult circles for its examples of "possession" by evil forces.
