Letter is signed by him: Ray. This unique document, a marvelous collectible, comes presented in a custom-designed black cloth & rich wine silk moire folding chemise with an elegant black leather label with gilt titles.

1853. First Edition. ALLINSON, William J., editor. The Non-Slaveholder. Philadelphia: George W. Taylor, 1853-54. Two volumes bound as one. Octavo, modern three-quarter calf gilt, marbled boards. $4600.Complete run of the final 24 issues (the two-volume ""New Series"" of 1853-54) of the abolitionist journal, The Non-Slaveholder, published from 1846 to 1854.This local abolitionist journal covered the quickly changing events around slavery, from news of anti-slavery gatherings to slave laws and from the publication of Uncle Tom's Cabin to some of Frederick Douglass' early writings. The journal was published for the Free Produce Society of Philadelphia, a store that only sold goods untainted by slave labor. The goods themselves were relatively expensive, but many Quakers and abolitionists happily paid more in order to avoid supporting slavery. William Allinson, the editor of this journal, was also the manager of the store. Although the Society disbanded in 1856, the store stayed open until after the Civil War when the high prices could not longer be justified as a moral issue. Owner inscription on title page. Bookseller blindstamp.Dampstain to fore-edge of text block, a bit of embrowning to interior. A very good copy. Scarce.

1929. Signed. GARBO, Greta. Document signed. Contract addendum. WITH: CUKOR, George. Typed letter signed. Garbo document: Santa Monica, California: March 12, 1941; Cukor letter: No place, August 1, 1969. Two sheets (8-1/2 by 11 inches), printed and typed (in carbon) on rectos. Housed together in custom half morocco portfolio. $3500.Original document signed by Greta Garbo in 1941 modifying an existing contract with Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Pictures regarding her final film, the disastrous failure Two-Faced Woman, directed by George Cukor. Offered together with a later letter from Cukor discussing Garbo, referring to her as ""our girlfriend,"" hoping the recipient might be able to forward a release letter to her, so that she might permit footage from their 1936 movie Camille to be used in a biopic about Cukor. The contract change proposed here is minor, altering a date that appears in the original contract from April 1, 1941 to April 15, 1941, but comes at a tremendously significant and fraught time for Garbo, her relationship with M-G-M, and her career. Though it does not name the film, this change almost certainly involves her contract to star in George Cukor's Two-Faced Woman, which came out late in 1941, an attempt to capitalize on Garbo's comic success in her most recent film, 1939's Ninotchka. In Two-Faced Woman she played a double role that featured her dancing the rumba, swimming, and skiing. Though the film performed reasonably well at the box office, it was a critical failure, and Garbo later referred to the film as ""my grave"" (Bainbridge, ""The Great Garbo"" in Life, 1955). Two-Faced Woman would indeed prove to be her last film, though she was only 36; she had made 28 feature films in only 16 years. Garbo hadn't planned on retiring, but the Second World War made finding roles difficult, and she was ambivalent about returning to work afterward. Cukor later said, ""People often glibly say that the failure of Two-Faced Woman finished Garbo's career. That's a grotesque oversimplification. It certainly threw her, but I think that what really happened was that she just gave up. She didn't want to go on"" (Paris, Garbo, 1994). In 1949, she was reportedly offered the role of fictional silent film star Norma Desmond in Sunset Boulevard; however, she ultimately turned down the role. Two file holes punched at upper margin of Garbo document. Fine condition.

Description
09/02/1850. This unpublished letter, written at the time of debates around the Fugitive Slave Act of 1850, comes from the collection of Dr. Otto O. Fisher, who bought primarily in the 1930s and 1940s, and thus has not been offered for sale in nearly a centuryIn the middle of the 19th century, Massachusetts brought together men and women who gathered to form perhaps America's first prominent literary movement. It was a flowering of literary artistic creation, and the image of the great men and women of the era sitting around the table discussing and debating the great issues and literary works of the time, from their own works to the evil institution of slavery, is today iconic.Amos Bronson Alcott founded the Town and Country Club in 1849 ""to establish better acquaintance between men of scientific, literary, and philanthropic pursuit ,"" in particular bringing together ""Town” intellectuals with those living outside urban Boston and Cambridge in the “Country"", such as Ralph Waldo Emerson, who lived in Concord and aided Alcott in establishing the Club. Bronson Alcott had been inspired by his recent series of conversations to provide a more regular and permanent meeting place for discussing the ""great questions"" of the day. Many of the first attendee at the Town and Country Club had been involved in the Transcendentalist Club. The Town and Country Club was a more formal success than the other gatherings, in its attempt to establish an organization with a constitution, formal rules, membership fees, and, hopefully, some control over membership. Attendees included many of the leading Trancendentalists. More than 100 people joined the Club or attended meetings, including Longfellow, Theodore Parker, Thoreau and others.Autograph letter signed, Concord, February 9, 1850, to merchant James Fisher, care of Messieurs Fisher and Chapin, Boston. ""I am going out of town so soon, to New York, that I am forced to name Monday next, at 3 1/2 o'clock PM as the hour for the first meeting of the Committee, at the T&C Club Room. I will avail myself of your kind offer to summon all the committee, except Dr. George B. Loring, with whom I have already communicated. Indeed I heard also of the appointment through him. I heartily wish to be present at one meeting and so name this.""

Description
London: Henry Sotheran & Co., 1888. FIRST EDITION. Complete with index, title vignette and 12 hand-colored plates after J.K. Keulemans (including the frontispiece), plus engraved text illustrations. Original green morocco, covers ruled in black with gilt lettering; despite some wear to the edges, a very beautiful copy from the library of Walter Henry James and Walter John James with their armorial bookplates on the paste-down. First edition, first issue (with the Slender-billed Dotterel frontispiece) of this milestone treatise on the shore-birds of the world. Seebohm writes the most comprehensive account on this group of birds, dealing with their distribution and mutual relationships. The subject is developed over thirty chapters, from general questions (the classification of the species) to a systematic treatment of each genus where the author describes its character, synonymy, and geographical distribution. Keulmans’ exquisite plates illustrated a number of species for the first time. Seebohm also includes a discussion of Darwin in the introduction. Seebohm (1832-1895) settled in Sheffield as a manufacturer of steel, but most of his time was devoted to ornithology. He visited Southern Europe and South Africa to study European birds in their winter quarters and to collect materials for the present work. He was a Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society and of the Linnean Society.

Description
Amsterdam, 1765. Engraved hand-colored map, matted and framed. A beautiful hand-colored map of the American southwest focusing on the Southern California, Baja California, the Gulf of California and Arizona (notwithstanding the title, there is no portion of New Mexico depicted). Tirion names San Diego, the Santa Catalina Islands, Ensenada and Cabo San Lucas on the coast, plus Casa Grande on the River Gila, which, though marked as a mission, was a large site of a Native American ruin. He includes images of missions and forts in Baja at San Jose del Cabo and Loretto. This is apparently the earliest printing of the map, published in Tirion’s Nieuwe en Beknopte Hand-Atlas (1765). It was re-issued a number of times over the next decade. Tirion (1705-1765) was a Dutch publisher in Amsterdam. He produced several atlases and Dutch town plans, as well as a number of pamphlets which are all quite scarce.

Description
Other. Preparatory notes for two speeches given by Caspar Weinberger, Secretary of Defense from 1981 until 1987, given at two very different points in his career. Weinberger came to be known as "Cap the Knife" for his reputation for cutting costs. 1) Three autograph pages of notes on ruled 8x12.5 in paper, with the heading "For January 6, 1981 / My Priorities for Defense Department." These appear to be Weinberger's draft notes for his confirmation hearing before the Senate Armed Forces Committee, which occurred on January 6, 1981. In them, Weinberger writes: "As long as we are perceived by our potential enemies, as well as by our allies, as ill-equipped, weak, irresolute, quiet-ridden and unwilling and unable to do anything but be patient, we can expect increasingly hostile actions against our people abroad, and actions that weaken our position in the world, such as we have seen in Angola, Afghanistan, Iran and elsewhere. Very good-; significantly age-toned. 2)A typed, hand-annotated text of a speech entitled "The Uses of Military Power--Ten Years Later," with the words "Final Draft / 1994" written in the upper right corner of the first page. Weinberger gave the original "Uses of Military Power" speech during his tenure as Secretary of Defense. In it, he outlined what became known as the Weinberger Doctrine, which delineated the circumstances under which the United States might deploy troops in military engagements. 18 pages, single-sided, with scattered ink annotations. Also included is a note on Weinberger's personal stationery, in his hand, reading "I was one of those who argued most strenuously--but alas not persuasively enough--against our sending troops as part of their MNF and of our remaining there after it became clear neither Israel nor Syria had agreed to withdraw." Very good. Slightly age-toned with minor bumping to edges and corners; rusted paperclip stain to first and last page. CW Consignment. CW001. 1359687. Special Collections.

Description
RECAMIER, MADAME JULIETTE. (1777-1849). Parisian socialite remembered for her popular Royalist salon as well as her great beauty, memorialized by such artists as Jean-Louis David. ALS. ("J.R."). 1p. 8vo. N.p., N.d. [1834]. To French author LAURE JUNOT, DUCHESS OF ABRANTÈS (1784-1838). In French with translation. "So how are you doing, dear friend? I am worried about your silence, I would go ask you if I were not restrained by sad affairs, so please tell Monsieur the count that I also complain about not seeing him, he would always find me between three and five o'clock, I would be delighted to see him and would thus hear from you – with a thousand tender greetings…" The daughter of a government minister from Lyon, during the Reign of Terror 15-year-old Juliette was married to Jacques-Rose Récamier, a wealthy banker nearly 30 years her senior. Their marriage was never consummated, fueling rumors that Récamier was Juliette's father, marrying her to make her his heir. Beautiful and flirtatious, Juliette became one of the most popular salon hostesses of her day, especially amongst writers, artists and anti-Napoleon intellectuals. Among the prominent figures who frequented her salon were writer Madame de Staël, King Charles XIV John of Sweden and Norway, and anti-Bonapartist general Jean Victor Marie Moreau. Her adoring male admirers included Napoleon's brother Lucien Bonaparte, Swiss political theorist Benjamin Constant, writer Jean-Jacques Ampère (son of the physicist), French statesman Mathieu Jean Felicité de Montmorency, and painter Jean-Louis David, who executed a famous portrait of her reclining on a sofa that was so associated with her that it became known as a récamier. However, only a few such relationships were consummated, notably with Prince August of Prussia and French author, historian and statesman Francois-René de Chateaubriand, who died in her arms. Juliette was exiled from France for a time due to her anti-Napoleon intrigues, which she continued while living in Italy. Our letter's recipient was also known for her beauty and wit. In 1800, she married one of Napoleon's generals, Jean-Andoche Junot (1771-1813), who, after occupying Lisbon (without any loss of life) was made Duc de Abrantès and governor of Portugal. His wife accompanied him in his Lisbon campaign but, upon her return to France, she fell out of favor with Napoleon, who had once proposed marriage to her widowed mother; thereafter, she supported the Bourbon restoration. From 1831-1834, Laure Junot published her memoirs in 18 volumes, with the support of her lover, French novelist Honoré de Balzac. Written on a folded sheet with the integral address leaf intact. Remnants of the red wax seal. Dated 1834 in an unidentified hand and in fine condition.

Brisbane: The Queensland Government Intelligence and Tourist Bureau. Fair. 1914. "New Edition". Softcover. (staple-bound) [heavily worn at edges, small tears at a couple of corners of front cover, spine covering partially gone but binding intact, some scrunching and minor dog-earing to lower corners of first few pages; fold-out map in excellent condition, with some minor creasing along the edge where it extends just slightly outside the text block]. (B&W photographs, fold-out color map) The subtitle pretty much tells it all. "Notwithstanding that the bulk of its country is devoted to the raising of sheep, cattle, and horses, evidence is forthcoming that the land is equally as fertile and wealth-producing as it is in other divisions of the State of Queensland." It goes on in this vein, extolling the region's richness in every possible way, before finally getting to the point: "The real want of Central Queensland at the present time is population." As of 1912, it's stated, there were just 79,332 residents, in an area of 212,224 square miles -- and all 164 pages of this book (with oodles of facts and figures, and a photograph on practically every page) were devoted to convincing the reader that he or she ought to add themselves to that number. (As of the 2021 census, the population had grown to 228,246 -- finally, more than one person per square mile!) .

Description
S. l.: By the artist. Very good. Manuscript, n. d. (mid-20th-century); 8 x 6; pp. [8], loose card stock sheets, stapled in upper left corner; text and illustrations to rectos only in black ink and watercolor; mild age-toning; several tiny punctures to corners (removed pins and / or staples); in very good condition. A beautiful interpretation of parts of T. S. Eliot's "The Hollow Men," the most impactful (presumably) lines were illustrated with stunning watercolors by an unknown, though quite accomplished artist. "The Hollow Men" was first published in 1925 - a poem following the otherworldly journey of the spiritually dead.
