Description
1909. [DESIGN] Kamisaka SEKKA, artist. MOMOYOGUSA. Kyoto: Unsodo, Meiji 42 [1909]. Volume one of three. 30.1 X 22.5 cm. Most consider it the finest Japanese design book of all time, this exquisite suite of double-page color-printed woodblocks is printed and overprinted using opaque and metallic inks to produce a sumptuous surface. This is an early impression. The condition is internally quite good, with almost none of the gutter fading and metallic ink transfer common to this work. One of the better printings we have seen. Complete, as issued, with all 20 prints from volume one included. Has the original printed title label, The mica patterning from the front cover is gone.

18. Shinjin Chōshishō Gafu 清人張子祥画譜 Qingren Zhang Zixiang Huapu [Painting album of Zhang Zixiang of China] Zhang Zixiang 張子祥, artist and Ōta Tokujirō, editor 太田徳次郎 編輯 Meiji period Tokyo 2 volumes 15.8 x 11.4cm bound Japanese style fukuro-toji. Vol 1 is 18 cho (no cho numbered 16) and Vol 2 is 17 cho with printed book slips on front wrappers. Each volume has 16 polychrome double-page original woodblock prints with calligraphy. 2 volumes (jyo 上 upper/former and 下 ge lower/latter). Colophon is at the end of Vol 2. A peek inside the fukuro “bags” reveal an inner layer of bookprint or newspaper. A few pages of Vol 1 appear to be printed on a darker paper. Among the lovely botanical woodcuts are black and gray-blue, vibrant purple, green or red and highlighted with light yellow or deeper hues. A bug or two are hidden within the branches and a fish swims through plants. Compared with an online NDL first edition, released in March of 1881, our Vol 1 has 1 fewer cho and 2 fewer woodcuts. (No earlier editions available for comparison.) Priced accordingly. Joshua Fogel writes about this work in his book “The Role of Japan in Modern Chinese Art.” “In this period, a large number of albums of Chinese calligraphers and painters were edited and published in Japan... the Qingren Zhang Zixiang Huapu by Ōta Tokujirō in Tokyo in March 1881…. These all testify both to the demand in Japanese society of the time for works by Chinese painters and calligraphers and to the demand for published albums of their works.” (See p. 37-38 chapter 1 and footnote 41) Soiling of wrappers and writing in marker with crossing out on rear wrappers. Damage to front wrapper, rip to rear inner wrapper and tear to thread on rear of Vol 2. Damp stain or stain to a few woodcuts. Toning to and soiling of some pages. Forecorner cloth is chipped on both. Small pencilled in numbers on the top of 7 cho in Vol 2. An important work in terms of both Japanese and Chinese art history.

Description
1894. Tesla, Nikola (1856-1943). [Patent] No. 2801. A.D. 1894. Complete specification. Improvements in reciprocating engines and means for regulating the period of the same. 4pp. Plate. London: Darling & Son, Ltd. for HMSO, 1894. 257 x 183 mm. Disbound. Stitch-holes in the left margin, left margin a bit ragged. Light soiling, but very good. Library stamps (one embossed) on the first page. First Edition of the British patent for Tesla's electro-mechanical oscillator, for which he had received a U. S. patent on 19 August 1893; the British patent was granted on 14 April 1894. Tesla's oscillator was a steam-powered reciprocating electricity generator, developed as a possible replacement for the inefficient reciprocating steam engines then used to power generators. Tesla predicted that his oscillator would provide "a means at hand of producing twice as much electricity from coal as we can produce at the present time" (quoted in Carlson, Tesla: The Inventor of the Electrical Age, p. 183), but it was rendered superfluous by the development of highly efficient steam turbines. Tesla claimed that the vibrations produced by his oscillator were strong enough to destroy buildings and even cause earthquakes, earning the device the nickname of "Tesla's earthquake machine."

Description
Nashua: J. Riley, 1890. Albumen photograph, 5 ½ x 4 inches on larger mount. A portrait of seven women holding weaving shuttles, most likely mill workers in Nashua. Two large mills, the Nashua Manufacturing Company and the Jackson Manufacturing Company, were active during this period, though we cannot confirm if this picture was taken at either. Generally well preserved with some wear and what looks like a fingerprint on the head of the subject in the upper right of the image, and some stray soiling and marks. Remains in good condition overall.
