Description
Hagenau: Johann Setzer, 1525. SOLE EDITION. Hardcover. Fine. Bound in late 19th or early 20th c. marbled boards, spine mended. A nice copy with the impressions of bearer type on the first and final leaf. Small light dampstain to corner of two leaves and some light spots on final printed leaf. A rare polemic by Philip Melanchthon against the radical reformer Thomas Müntzer, the "murderous and bloodthirsty prophet" and the most significant figure in the second, crucial phase of the Peasants' War. In the face of crushing taxation and crop failures, the German peasants had declared open rebellion against the oppression of their feudal lords. Müntzer encouraged them with fiery oratory and led them into battle. The peasants' were defeated at the Battle of Frankenhausen. Captured in battle, Müntzer was executed by beheading, his body was impaled, and his head stuck on a stake outside the gates of Mühlhausen, where it remained for years. This book was printed a month after Müntzer's decisive defeat. Melanchthon's purpose in publishing this book was to show that Müntzer was a tool of the devil and to warn others not to follow his teachings. The book contains a speech purportedly given by Müntzer to rally his troops as they prepared to meet the armies of the Saxon and Hessian princes on 17 May 1525 at Frankenhausen. Contemporary reports indicate Müntzer did in fact give a speech, but the text as given in this book was almost certainly composed by Melanchthon and his allies: "There is absolutely no evidence to suggest that the words are Müntzer's; he certainly made some kind of speech, and an idea of what he said was reported by men such as Hans Hut, who had been at Müntzer's side. But Melanchthon was on that day in Wittenberg, 150 kms distant, and certainly would not have been able to record the words spoken. At best, the text is reported third-hand and faulty; at worst, it is a complete fabrication."(Drummond) In Melanchthon's version of the speech, Müntzer claimed a divine prophecy led him to call for the uprising: "I only began all this at God's command, and not for selfish reason or out of boldness, for I have never been a soldier in all my days; but because God spoke to me and told me to march forth". Melanchthon presents Müntzer's case in language that closely resembles Müntzer's writings, and the speech includes a battle cry against the nobility: "They are nothing but tyrants, who fleece the people, and exhaust our blood and sweat with their splendour, with useless pomp, with their whoring and villainy. . . . But what do our princes do? They do not give justice, they do not keep the roads clear, do not prevent murder and robbery or punish offences and evil, do not defend widows and orphans, do not help the poor to justice - which is the very reason that God created the rulers . . . You should not imagine that God will let this go on for much longer, for, just as he destroyed the Canaanites, so he will destroy our princes. Melanchthon adds his commentary to the speech. Despite not being present, he argues that many of Müntzer's followers seemed reluctant to join the battle: "And when Thomas had finished speaking, the majority of the army were desperate and wanted to get away from there, for they saw that the water was about to overflow the bucket. But there was no order or discipline which allowed anyone to take good advice on what to do." (translated by Andy Drummond) Thomas Müntzer In 1523, Müntzer, formerly the leader of the radical "Zwickau Prophets" began to radicalize the area of Allstedt, where he was then pastor, preaching that the ungodly were to be eliminated and the elect would establish a kingdom of Christ on earth and threatening the political rulers of the area with rebellion. In early 1524, as Müntzer grew bolder in his denunciation of the authorities and called for an elimination of the enemies of God, he divided the citizenry into military units in order to resist any outside interference in his activities. Müntzer openly challenged and attacked Luther, who was openly opposed to Müntzer's ministry of the elect, as one of "our mad, debauching pigs, which are horrified by the windstorm, the raging billows and by all the waters of wisdom." Following the Battle of Frankenhausen, Müntzer was captured and executed by beheading. His body was impaled and his head stuck on a stake outside the gates of Mühlhausen, where it remained for years. Following Müntzer's execution on May 27, Luther would write "I killed Müntzer; his death is on my shoulders. But I did it because he wanted to kill my Christ'". (Brecht Vol II, p. 185) The Peasants' War The Peasants' War was one of the bloodiest chapters in the turbulent early history of the German Reformation. The uprising began in upper Swabia in early 1524 and quickly spread to southern and western Germany, as well as to parts of Switzerland and Austria. The peasants were motivated by a number of factors: crushing taxation, lack of a voice in government, no recourse to the courts, crop failure, and helplessness in the face of their feudal masters' demands. But whereas these conditions had resulted in smaller uprisings in the past, the massive rebellion of 1524-5 was also a result of the turbulent upheaval caused by the nascent Reformation. By the time the rebellion was crushed in late 1525, some 100,000 combatants and civilians had been killed. Reprisals were carried out for the next two years, and the peasants' demands, as outlined in their Twelve Articles, came to nothing.

1725. First Edition. MANDEVILLE, John. The Voiage and Travaile of Sir John Maundevile, Kt. Which Treateth of the Way to Hierusalem; and of Marvayles of Inde, with Other Ilands and Countryes. London: Printed for J. Woodman and D. Lyon, and C. Davis, 1725. Octavo, contemporary calf sympathetically rebacked, raised bands. $5000.First edition, first issue, large paper copy, one of only 350 copies printed, of the definitive English translation of a fantastical medieval travel narrative that helped shape European thought on the Near, Middle and Far East. One of the most popular travelogues of the Middle Ages, Mandeville's Travels describes a 34-year-long voyage by a pseudonymous 14th-century English knight who allegedly journeyed from St. Albans to the Holy Land, Egypt, Arabia, India, Cathay, Tartary and the realm of Prester John. The text is largely fictitious, drawn from a variety of unreliable sources, and the actual compiler is still unidentified—but ""the book remains, and is none the less delightful for the mystery which attaches to it, and… [in the history of English literature] it stands as the first, or almost the first, attempt to bring secular subjects within the domain of English prose, and that is enough to make it mark an epoch"" (Pollard, Travels, ""Bibliographical Note""). The text was originally known via French and Latin manuscripts and first appeared in print in Dutch circa 1470; the present edition marks the first printed appearance of this English translation, ""publish'd entire from an Original MS. in the Cotton Library,"" which established itself as the most authoritative version. With tipped-in title page printed in red and black. ESTC notes that the work was ""printed by William Bowyer; his records show 350 copies printed."" ESTC T100822. Howgego I M39. Catalogue of the Interesting Contents of Walton Hall… Property of the Late Edward Hailstone 1294. Elaborate black and gilt leather armorial bookplate of Edward Hailstone (1818-1890).Minor foxing; slight wear to original leather. A handsome copy.

Description
[Burbank, CA]: [Walt Disney Studios], [1951]., 1951 9" x 9", within a 15" x 15" frame. Gouache on celluloid drawing of the Queen of Hearts from Alice in Wonderland, holding a flamingo mallet, colored in green, yellow, black, red, and white, with a gray background, in a glossy black frame. Fine. Overall, a bright and exemplary cel from the classic 1951 Disney film. Walt Disney's animated film Alice in Wonderland (1951) is based on Lewis Carroll's Alice's Adventures in Wonderland (1865) and its sequel, Through the Looking-Glass, and What Alice Found There (1872). Walt Disney was inspired by Carroll's books from a young age, and his early silent "Alice Comedies" in the 1920s showed the imaginative author's influence on him. Disney purchased the rights to Tenniel's Alice illustrations in 1931 with the idea of turning the books into a film, but it wasn't until 1951 that the project was finally completed. Featuring the voices of Kathryn Beaumont, Ed Wynn, Sterling Holloway and others, the film received a lukewarm reception when it was released, but has since come to be regarded as one of Disney's finest feature-length films. Like other hand-drawn Disney films, Alice in Wonderland required hundreds of thousands of hand-drawn cels (24 images equated to only a single second of animation) and the loving labor of hundreds of artists.. First Edition. Fine.

Extremely rare first and sole edition of this Mallorcan festival book commemorating the festivities held in Palma on the occasio
Description
Extremely rare first and sole edition of this Mallorcan festival book commemorating the festivities held in Palma on the occasion of Charles IV's accession to the throne. The description, with its careful lists of the noblemen involved, constitutes a snapshot of Mallorcan society at the end of the eighteenth century. The work is illustrated with two plates, one a plan of the central square with the arrangement of ephemeral architecture and decorations, the other a very large plate (49.5 x 33 cm overall, 42.5 x 32 cm to platemark) depicting the triumphal arc erected in honor of the new sovereign, with his arms above those of Palma de Mallorca. The author estimates that between 34,000 and 38,000 citizens took part in the celebration, with gentlemen on horseback dressed à la española antigua and ladies in such splendid finery that it "filled the spirit with extasty." (B2r) The central square was festively decorated with and portraits of the king and queen to which the assembled paid solemn respects.Mallorca had seen a growth in trade and prosperity under Charles III thanks to his policies of liberalizing trade with America. Churches and monasteries were brought under the aegis of the Spanish crown, and the first postal service was created. The accession of his famously weak son at the very time of revolutionary unrest in France would have been a source of worry.Although printing began on Mallorca in the late sixteenth century, work with the Palma imprint are rarely seen on the market.OCLC lists a single copy, University of Connecticut*Palau II.35,402;. 4to. (10) ff., with two folding plates. Bound in contemporary patterned wrappers, in turn bound in modern quarter calf and marbled papers over boards. Ownership inscription of the Marquesa Axiany (?). Some bleeding of ownership inscription onto title but otherwise very good, with good strikes of the plates.

Milan: G. Silvestri, 1841. ONLY EDITION. Original printed wrappers; spine strip worn. Unopened. First and only edition, extremely rare, of this self-published medical guide to bad breath and body odor. It treats perspiration in general, hyperhidrosis, the effect of different clothing materials on odor, odor related to sex and age, and odor in different parts of the body, as well as bad breath related to diet and digestion, oral hygiene, and tobacco use. A fascinating bibliographical object: apparently at the bottom of a stack of copies when it left the print shop, the imprint lines of the string that bound the pile remain. Paper of a different stock than the printed matter acts as sewing guards, and the rear wrapper and final text leaf are advertisements for the author’s forthcoming translation of a dental manual and a guide to the city of Vienna for Italian travelers. OCLC locates only 1 other copy worldwide (Univ. of Texas Medical Branch Library).

Charles Hobson, book artist extraordinaire, has incorporated into his design old maritime charts of Maine, overhead views of islands based on those provided by Google Earth, model sails and rigging, and a pastel of a baseball cap (the BoSox, of course) signed by him beneath. Includes a TLS from Hobson to the original owner of the book loosely laid in, dated July 28, 2009, wherein he walks the recipient through the book pointing out salient features - for example, he writes "a chart is sewn into the following two pages to show the sites of Roger Angell's winter-night-thinking about rock-strewn waters near his home and the White Island adventure with a bottle of Scotch and a Sox game". ___DESCRIPTION: Accordion-style book encased in a hard binding, the final page only being tipped-in at its fore-edge to the rear board, title page has a small chart which can be unfolded, incorporated through the book are a jib, another chart, and model boat main and jib; type Times New Roman, printed letterpress, folio size (approximately 15" tall), eleven leaves (each printed only on one side) total with colophon on the last page, a limited edition of 39 copies this being no. 5, signed in pencil by both the author and book artist on the colophon page, Mr. Hobson also signed beneath the pastel of the Red Sox baseball cap. Milan: presso Agnello Nobile, 1803. 2 volumes in one, 12mo (157 x 97 mm).  xi, [1], 296; [4], 383, [1] pp.  Contemporary tree calf, smooth spine with red and dark green morocco lettering pieces, small gilt Montgolfier balloon tool at top and bottom, yellow red-sprinkled edges.  First complete edition of an epic poem on ballooning and the first balloon flights.  In elevated verse, the poem provides a history of aerostation and technical information on the construction of the first balloons. Not only a rare choice of topic for the genre, Lancetti's poem is also, with twenty cantos in ottava rima, several containing 130 to 160 stanzas, possibly the longest poem ever written on a means of transport.  Not surprisingly, the author admits to an obsession with hot air balloons in his youth. Having witnessed the first ascension in Italy, carried out by Paolo Andreani and the Gerli brothers in Milan on 25 February 1784, Lancetti decided, at the age of 17, to write a poem on the topic. He describes difficulties finding the correct style and varying the descriptions of the different ballooning experiments, which were fundamentally so similar. Interrupted by the obligations of life and career, he returned periodically to the work; finally, emerging from the "political vortex" of the 1790's, he decided at the urging of his friends to publish it. The poem quickly regained the obscurity from whence it had emerged.A Cremonese classicist and man of letters, Lancetti published a bio-bibliography of his countrymen, a dictionary of pseudonyms, and translations from the Greek.  The first ten cantos of the present labor of love were published at Milan in 1802, in quarto format. Although the title of that edition announced twenty cantos, vol. II was apparently never printed (three copies located, Parma, Biblioteca Palatina, Library of Congress and British Library, all with vol. I only).  OCLC lists six copies of this edition in the US. Boffito, Bibliotheca aeronautica italiana I:38; Caproni Guasti, L'aeronautica italiana nell' immagine 1840-1875, pp, 126-7; Passano, Anonimi e pseudonimi italiani, Suppl. al Melzi, p. 20.

Spine lettered in gilt. Top edge gilt. In the original black cardboard slipcase with spine lettered in gilt. The Masque of Comus was the last book illustrated by Dulac, left incomplete at the time of his death in 1956. After missing out on a few projects due to his heart attack in 1949, Macy offered Dulac a choice of titles, eventually commissioning him to paint 10 pictures for Comus. "His pace was slow. He did not get started until June 1952. By October he had finished two illustrations. By April 24, 1953, he reported to Macy that he had completed 4 more for a total of 6. A few weeks later, on May 30, Helen Beauclerk wrote Macy of Dulac's death on May 25th. She told Macy that as recently as May 21st, Dulac had been working on his 7th Comus illustration...Comus was the 250th book Macy had made for his Limited Editions Club...Like all his books, Macy's Comus is a beautiful production" (Hughey). John Milton's Comus (A Masque Presented at Ludlow Castle, 1634) was a type of courtly theatrical performance, that saw its heroine use her power of mind and virtue to debate Comus, the god of revery, and resist temptation. French-born anglophile Edmond Dulac (1882-1953) was one of the most prized artists of the "golden age" of book illustration. A gifted artist, especially in the medium of watercolor, Dulac's ability to render luxurious detail and subtle emotions is otherworldly. He is best known for his illustrations for books and magazines, although he also designed for the stage and wrote music; in moments of financial insecurity he produced serialized cartoons and became an authority on postage stamp design (White). Hughey 103. LEC Bibliography 250. Fine.
