New York: Random House, 1956. First Edition. Very Good +/Very Good +. First printing, with pink boards and matching unclipped pink jacket priced 250/250. Inscribed by Dr. Seuss on the verso of front free endpaper: "For Lynne / Dr. Seuss." A Very Good+ copy in like dust jacket. Some soiling and edgewear to boards, but internally a clean copy with just the faintest foxing to the final two pages and the rear pastedown. Jacket with some fading to spine, some rubbing to spine ends and corners, and some foxing mostly visible from the verso. If I Ran the Circus is a delightful rhyming adventure with all of Dr. Seuss' signature quirk. Young Morris McGurk has dreams of overseeing an exotic circus that does more than feature lions and tigers - his big top would feature a wink-hooded Hoodwink, a Spotted Atrocious, and a great Sneelock. "Once again, Seuss tells a story through a young boy's wild imagination...playing with the sound of words" (Strebor). Seuss' silly circus story makes a charming read at any age. [Washington?, 1845. 8pp. Stitched and partly uncut. Short tears at blank extremities. Good+. Yancey writes, "So many demands have been made by my friends for copies of the correspondence between Mr. Clingman and myself, pending the late difficulty between us, and of the basis of the settlement of the affair, that I have thought it best to print the following memoranda for circulation among them." Sensitive Southern gentlemen avoid a duel over Yancey's remarks on the floor of the House of Representatives, that he "had nothing to say with someone with the head and heart of the gentleman from North Carolina." Clingman took umbrage, inferring that Yancey was referring to him. The delicate, formal exchange of notes, with participation of seconds, Yancey's retraction, and Clingman's conciliatory words, are printed. Not in Sabin, AI, LCP.
