Original patterned paper box with lithographed onlay on upper cover. Box worn and soiled
Description
Paris: Chez Alph. Giroux et Cie, 1835. 11 (of 12?) hand colored discs [lacking number 6], paper board disk with eye slits, and wooden framed mirror. Without the wooden handle with brass fitting. Original patterned paper box with lithographed onlay on upper cover. Box worn and soiled. 11 (of 12?) hand colored discs [lacking number 6], paper board disk with eye slits, and wooden framed mirror. Without the wooden handle with brass fitting. Among the earliest animation devices, it was first introduced in 1832 by Joseph Plateau and marketed in Paris by Giroux as early as 1833 as a boxed set like the present. A wooden handle with a brass peg would be fitted first with the larger plain disc with eye slits, followed by one of the hand colored animation discs. Arrayed radially around the disc's center is a series of pictures showing sequential phases of the animation. Standing in front of a mirror (one included in this set) the discs would be spun and the viewer would look through the slits into the mirror to see the reflection of the animation. Included among the discs present are man with bat and ball, a blacksmith hammering a piece of hot metal with a drop forge, two men playing leap frog, a woman with a cornucopia dancing, a man walking a tightrope, a man playing a cello, a saw cutting wood, a crank turning a windmill, as well as several geometric patterns. Scarce, particularly in the original box.

Description
Morelia, Michoacan, Mexico: ALTERnativa Ediciones, 2019. Hardcover. Fine. Hardcover. One of 5 copies. According to the artist, this book "presents my reflection and the relationship between the women of my family. On the one hand we are paper boats in the sea of liquid time and on the other side it is a narrative map of some kind of genealogical tree." An elephant folio accordion bound in red cloth boards with gilt title to front board. The interior includes a detailed copperplate etching of portraits of the artist and the women in her family on paper boats sailing across the sea. The verso is a silkscreen showing a descriptive family tree including the artist, her three daughters, her mother, twin sister, aunts, grandmother, etc. This collage-style illustration includes places, descriptive words, dates, photographs, and shows her family's immigration from Russia to Mexico. Text in Spanish with some English. Printed on Guarro Super Alfa 100% cotton paper. Housed in a matching red cloth covered clamshell box. Bumping to bottom corner of the box. Size: about 24 x 10 inches. Ioulia Akhmadeeva (1971 - ) was born in Russia but has resided in Mexico for nearly 30 years. Description
Reilly & Lee, Chicago, 1917 Original pictorial cloth, illustrated by John R. Neill with 12 color plates. This is an early, but not first edition, retaining the same number of plates as the first. In later editions, fewer color plates were included. Aside from light soiling, the binding is very bright and firm. The contents exhibit the usual foxing and browning, but all plates are present and in fine condition. A most pleasing copy of one of the popular titles from this iconic American series.
