Good. Toned, chipping. Lower wrapper lacking.
Description
Chattanooga, Tennessee: The Chattanooga Medicine Co, 1880. Good. Toned, chipping. Lower wrapper lacking.. A scarce pocket-sized songster advertising patent medicines sold by the Chattanooga Medicine Company, for the treatment and prevention of common family illnesses ranging from coughs and colds to rheumatism and "female diseases" (e.g. painful or delayed menstruation). Note the way in which the medicine for "female diseases" is marketed on the last page via a testimonial from a man, not a woman: "My wife suffered for more than a year, but would not submit to an examination by a doctor. I coaxed her to try the Wine of Cardui treatment, which has been worth its weight in gold". Each recto in the songster offers medical advice and testimonials, and each verso has different song lyrics. Song titles include: "My Sweetheart's the Man in the Moon"; "I Whistle and Wait for Katie"; and "Willow, Titwillow". An interesting and scarce example of the kind of ephemera produced by pharmaceutical companies to sell medicine to American families at this time. Single vol. (5.75" by 3.75"), pp. [30], in original illus. wrps. with wood engraving of a hiker "gathering roots and herbs at Lookout Mountain Tenn. for" the company. The Chattanooga Medicine Company was founded in 1879 and became best known for selling pain relievers family medicines including laxatives and panaceas for women's health ailments. The company continued well into the 20th century and expanded, interestingly, into producing K-Rations during WWII.
