Description
Minneapolis: Angel Bomb Press, 2022. Fine. Deluxe Edition. One of 50 copies, signed by the artist. This story was originally published in "Astounding Science-Fiction" in August 1938 under the pseudonym Don A. Stuart. It was later adapted into multiple film versions, the most recent being "The Thing" in 2011. This horrific tale of alien encounters and Antarctic exploration is presented here in a fine letterpress edition with nineteen striking, color illustrations by Todd Thyberg. It is in a special binding of quarter tan goatskin over blue Japanese cloth covered boards. It is housed in blue cloth covered tryptich folding case with an interior folder holding a suite of five letterpress illustrations, each signed and dated by the artist. The case is made to look like a government file with maps lining the interior and an official resin medallion stating "Secondary Polar Expedition: Antarctica" to the front panel. The interior maps have been hand-altered with pencil notes of expedition locations. The book, maps, and illustrations were letterpress printed with Ehrhardt Monotype and Haboro Contrast types on Classic Crest Bare White eggshell paper. Polymer plates by the Boxcar Press. Binding by the Campbell Logan Bindery featuring a hand cast, hand painted resin medallion by the artist on the front of the case. 60 pages. PRI/072423.

Description
Philadelphia: J.B. Lippincott, 1871. FIRST EDITION. Publisher’s cloth, author and title in gilt on spine; fly-leaf torn on the top right corner. Ownership signature and stamp. First edition. The author explores the history, effects, and consequences of opium use and addiction, as well as the use of other (evil) substances such as alcoholic beverages, weed, tobacco, coca, tea, and coffee. The hygienic aspects and pathologic relations of these substances are treated, exploring their impact on physical and mental health. Many of the substances are compared and contrasted, such as opium and alcohol, opium and tobacco, and tobacco and cocaine. The book provides a detailed analysis of the opium trade and its effects on society, including the rise of opium addiction and the social, economic, and political implications. The author also provides recommendations for the treatment of opium addiction and the prevention of substance abuse. Of particular interest is Calkins’ suggestions for legislation against the collective stimuli of these substances. Calkins described addiction as “a power subtle in its contrivings, stealthy in its approaches, dangerous as it is insidious, mischievous as it is plausible and seductive.” This statement, made not only in the book but by his declarations in various lectures he gave, basically initiated the country’s ongoing “war on drugs” which of course still continues to this day Calkins (1804-1878) was a medical doctor who took great interest in the relationship between poverty, family environment, substance abuse and crime, often commenting in various publications on the topic of addiction as a result of heredity or environmental causes. Description
Savannah, GA, 1895. Printed self wrappers, 24cm x 16cm; [8]pp. Printed on newsprint. Wear to extremities (without loss); old dampstain affecting first two leaves; Good and sound. An apparently unrecorded trade monthly for drummers, bill-posters, and handbill distributors. A charmingly rustic piece of 19th-century Americana; the writing, layout, and printing are all of such a wonderfully amateur character that one marvels the journal lasted into a second volume. Includes numerous advertisements, including solicitations from those wishing to post bills and those wishing to have bills posted. Of particular interest to this bookseller is an advertisement on page 4, signed "Tarver's Old Book Store" in Savannah: "Have you any old books, or anything that is old. Look in your old trunks and search the house through. If you have any thing that is old send them or write to W.H. Tarver manager..." No holdings located in OCLC.

Description
New York: Samuel Colman, 1839. Very good.. Early edition of the book that made the Rollo series big, intended to instruct the novice American reader by combining a mature vocabulary with a lively series of animal metamorphoses and moral lessons. The hapless and ungrateful Rollo made his first cameo appearance in the rare THE LITTLE SCHOLAR LEARNING TO TALK: A Picture Book for Rollo, by His Father, reissued in 1839 as ROLLO LEARNING TO TALK. ROLLO LEARNING TO READ is thus technically the second Rollo book, but the first "devoted wholly to Rollo" (Blanck) and is the title responsible for the series's popularity and influence. 6.25'' x 4''. Original gilt-lettered blind-stamped green cloth. Illustrated with black and white frontispiece and full-page wood engravings. 180 pages. Moderate edgewear and scuffing to boards, sometimes exposing bits of board. Pencil to front free endpaper. Mild foxing throughout.

Description
Vintage original 22 x 14" (56 x 36 cm.) window card poster, small sticker affixed to top left side, slight creasing, NEAR FINE. Elizabeth Forsythe Hailey adapted this one-woman play from her novel of the same name -- a story that unfolds over many decades about a young woman who inherits a fortune in a society in which women are expected to conform to rigid stereotypes. The play was first given in Los Angeles to critical praise in 1983. This Broadway run was very short-lived, but the play was later the basis for a very successful television mini-series starring Sally Field.

Description
Quarto, 4 pages, plus original mailing envelope, in very good, clean, and legible condition. 1853 Politicking at the Pennsylvania Capitol Awaiting the Presidential Inauguration of Franklin Pierce. The politically well-connected writer, apparently seeking a federal appointment as Postmaster or some other position appointed by the Postmaster General of the United States, was lobbying friends in the Pennsylvania House of Representatives to support his candidacy. The newly-elected President Franklin Pierce was about to sworn into office the following week but Denlinger had given up on the idea of personally visiting Washington because "Report says that the city is already full to overflowing and that the meanest accommodations cannot be had for less than from three to five dollars per day. It is even said that lodgings can hardly be obtained even in a stable. So you see what folly it would be for such a modest man as I am to be caught in such a crowd." Many of the people he was lobbying in Harrisburg, in town for the Democratic State Convention, were planning to visit the national capital thereafter and Denlinger thought he could round up enough VIP support to win him the position he desired. Writing to a friend in his hometown of Beaver, on the Ohio River in western Pennsylvania, Denlinger also offers an inside view of political doings in Harrisburg, naming many names and summing up his view of the regional distinctions between politicians in the Legislature: "Thie place is now full of people from all parts of the State, attending the State Convention and on their way to Washington but the major part seem to be from the Eastern Counties. There is a marked difference between Eastern and Western men here. The former appear aristocratic, wearing the finest broadcloth, clothing cut in the extreme of fashion, sporting heavy gold chains, and wearing the spring style of hats with flat brims, which give rise to the idea of a sick chair, while the latter dress like ourselves, are clever and easily approached…"
