A nice combination of Japanese book design and Russian constructivism. Very good in the rare, but slightly rubbed and soiled decorated slipcase.

n.p.: n.p., 1930. Near fine.. Two original pen-and-ink drawings for a short story by Enid Blyton - an interesting example of the kinds of changes that occur when a story is re-published. Many aspects of a production may change between a story's first appearance in print and subsequent appearances. If the format of the new appearance differs significantly from the previous version, page layouts must also be reconfigured, sometimes necessitating aesthetic revisions. This pair of pen-and-ink fairy illustrations appears to be an example of one such adjustment for publication. The illustrator of these pieces, Helen Jacobs, was praised for the "precision, energy and imagination" of the art she contributed to children's books and various periodicals (Beetles). Among her credits are illustrations for almost 20 short stories by Enid Blyton, a British children's story powerhouse who enlisted the skill of numerous artists to illustrate her constant output. Blyton's publicity and marketing prowess made her work particularly appealing to publishers, who hoped to capitalize on her popularity with collections, serializations, and reprints. "A Very Queer Thing," the origin of this pair of illustrations, made its first appearance in 1942 in the SUNNY STORIES periodical; no illustrator is credited in this first publication. When "A Very Queer Thing" appeared again in the 1949 ENID BLYTON'S DAFFODIL STORY BOOK collection, it was accompanied by new illustrations from Dorothy M. Wheeler. Jacobs's illustrations appear never to have been published; it is possible that Jacobs was not available for the project, and the publishers turned to Wheeler, another frequent Blyton collaborator. Or, the publisher ultimately felt that Jacobs's art was not right for the story, and selected Wheeler instead. In either case, these images, though they did not ultimately reach the final stage of publication, offer a behind-the-scenes snapshot of an early stage in the production of an illustrated book. 7.5'' x 11'' (illustration 2); 7'' x 12'' (illustration 4); 11.75'' x 15'' (mats). Two original pen-and-ink drawings hinged onto mats. Pencil notations to margins giving the illustrations as numbers 2 and 4; illustration 2 with "and she poked Susie with her wand" in pencil to lower margin. Mats with some bumps; one mat with abrasion where former label was removed. Illustrations with pinprick holes to upper corners. Notably clean and sharp.

Baker was also good enough to inform me by the same mail. At present, however, I find myself more engaged about the report of the Committee of Foreign relations, than anything else, and therefore you must pardon me for speaking once more of it. The letters which you have already received unfold pretty fully my views, which I am sorry to find differ essentially from those of yourself & my friend W. Smith. I assent unequivocally to all you say as to the falsehood, partiality, and unmanly language of the Committee, as to the pother made by them about defence, as to the inefficiency of the means proposed, and most of the other remarks made by you upon that blustering feeble production. But I cannot agree with you in your conclusions, because it appears to me they involved what Chase used to be so fond of talking of, a non sequitur. "You have used indecorous language – there fore we will not aid you in defending the country." "The country is now wholly without the means of defence therefore we call upon you to declare war." "You have a just cause of war against France; therefore make an immediate declaration against England." "Your means of defence as you propose them are not ample enough – we admit most of them may be useful but they should have gone further; therefore we will vote for none of them." My dear friend I cannot do wrong because the democrats are sinners, and in my endeavours to fulfill the wishes of a party, I cannot forget the interests of my Country. What is the situation that we are in? About the unhappy causes of it you and I can never differ, but what is the situation of the country? The Government unhappily stand pledged to France. They will not break faith (as they would term it) with her. England perseveres in her orders in council, and, as you see from the late negotiations, will not revoke them, even upon an undeniable repeal of the French decrees, with out obtaining certain other prerequisites, which it is generally certain never can be obtained from France. In this state of things what are we the Federalists to do? Shall we invite the government to yield on these points to England, and embroil themselves with France? Would they be willing to do this, or would the public sentiment at all accompany us in such a request? Is it our policy to continue the felo de se practice of holding ourselves up by intemperate language as British partisans, and increasing against a popular prepossession, thereby diminishing our numbers, and our little remaining influence? Will we act with the temperate wisdom of discreet politicians, to urge in direct terms war (preferable as we may alternately believe it to be to a long continuation of the present system) at this time? Could we, if disposed to do so, conceal the real object of such a proposition from our political opponents? Could we (certainly we could not) carry with us the opinions of our own party? Can we object to a gradual augmentation of the means of preparation, consistently with our professions in a state of things having even a tendency to war? What shall we say after having voted against army, navy, militia, volunteers, arming of merchantmen & in favor of a renewal of the nonimportation restrictions? But my friend inefficient as you and I consider the proposed increases, our federalists from the eastward are many of them of a different opinion – Some of them think they go to far, and will not vote for them or their full extent, as for instance the 10,000 addl troops, increase of navy &c on that ground. As at present advised, I cannot but concur in the opinion of my friend Quincy & others, that political consistency, sound party policy, genuine patriotism, and a fair calculation of consequences, all require my vote in favour of the resolutions of this course the democrats are very apprehensive – they anxiously wish us to oppose them, knowing they can carry them or anything else in despite of our speeches or votes. Some of them are disposed to carry them further than the Comee, so as to drive us by that means into opposition. Bright, bold colors, heavy paper, very good. ELEAZAR ALBIN (1690 – 1742) was an English naturalist and watercolorist illustrator who wrote and illustrated a number of books including A Natural History of English Insects (1720), A Natural History of Birds (1731–38) and The Natural History of Spiders and other Curious Insects (1736). Nothing is known of Albin's early life, though he may have been German-born; he claimed to have been in Jamaica in 1701. In 1708 he is known to have been married and living in Piccadilly, London. Albin taught watercolor painting before being instructed in natural history by silk weaver and naturalist Joseph Dandridge. A Natural History of Birds has colored engravings by Albin and his daughter Elizabeth Albin. In that book Albin writes "As for the paintings, they are all done from life, with all the exactness I could either with my own hand, or my daughter's, whom I have taught to draw and paint after the life". This was the first book on birds to include color plates. Fewer than 100 copies were printed, accounting for its rarity. THE MUSCOVY DUCK (Cairina moschata) is a large duck native to Mexico and Central and South America. Although a tropical bird, it adapts well to cooler climates, thriving in weather as cold as −12 °C and able to survive even colder conditions.
