1890. First Edition. MARSHALL, Alfred. Principles of Economics. London: Macmillan, 1890. Thick octavo, original green cloth rebacked with original spine laid down. Housed in a custom clamshell box. $16,500.First edition of this foundational work on economics. Only Volume I (as here) was ever published, scarce in contemporary cloth. The founder of ""diagrammatic economics"" and the first to introduce simple graphs as a tool for explaining concepts such as the laws of supply and demand, Alfred Marshall was arguably the most important economist of the 19th century. However, although Marshall was known for sharing his ideas in lectures and in conversations and although the influence of those ideas could be observed in the work of pupils and contemporaries, ""no part of his work was published in any adequate form until the appearance of his Principles of Economics in 1890… When at length it saw the light, his Principles of Economics was readily accepted as the greatest economics treatise of his generation; and for more than 30 years most serious work on the subject was built on his foundations. By the end of 1928 some 40,000 copies of the book had been sold in English, it had been translated into many languages, and its influence had penetrated to all schools of economic thought in every part of the world"" (DNB). By Marshall's death, his students occupied over half of the economic chairs in the U.K. and he was considered to be the father of economics in England. ""More than anyone else, Marshall helped make economics a field of study in its own right"" (Pressman, 64). With 60 page publisher's catalogue dated 10/2/90 bound in at rear. Owner signature in pencil on half title.Only very minor wear to cloth extremities. A beautiful copy, most unusual in this condition.

Trusky's research focused on a variety of subjects, including censorship in Idaho public libraries, WWI Belgian wheat and flour sack paintings, AIDS and artists' books, forest clear-cutting and a number of other topics. From 1980-1995, he turned his attention to silent filmmaker Nell Shipman. Most recently he was focused on the life and works of Idaho artist and bookmaker James Castle. Description
Dallas, TX: Dallas Historical Society Hall of State, 1986. Second printing. Spiral bound. VG (cover sunned all else excellent). Purple plastic spiral binding with monochrome illustration on cover. 96 pp. Bw illustrations. Ephemera laid-in. Designed for history teachers of students in grades 4-7 and for museum educators, this teacher's manual interprets art and objects in the Hall of State (Dallas) within the context of the Texas history curriculum. Although the guide focuses specifically on Texas history and the Hall of State, it can be used as a model for museum and school educators in other states. The manual is based on positive findings from a 1982-83 research project in which a collaboration of school and museum educators demonstrated that children learn to a significant degree during a museum field-study experience when it is planned as an integral part of a curriculum unit. Following an abstract of the research project, an interpretative narrative explains the architecture and murals in the Hall of State. Pre- and post-visit learning activities, correlating with "State Board of Education Rules for Curriculum," include a number of reproducible games, crossword puzzles, data retrieval worksheets, and fact sheets. Five interdisciplinary lesson plans for students in grades 4-5 focus on vocabulary development, map skills, data retrieval, oral language development, and interpretation of visual images. Instructional activities for grade 7 focus on symbols, people in Texas history, geographic areas, events that influence the course of history, and heroes and heroines. Three reproducible student handouts, "Texarcana Smith in the Temple of Mysteries, ""Archaeological Dig Discovery Game," and "Lone Star Trivia," are followed by an answer key and bibliography.

Unfinished Tales is a collection of narratives ranging in time from the Elder Days of Middle-earth to the end of the War of the Ring, and provides those who have read The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings with a whole collection of background and new stories. The book concentrates on the realm of Middle-earth and comprises such elements as The Quest of Erebor, Gandalf's lively account of how it was that he came to send the Dwarves to the celebrated party at Bag-End; the emergence of the sea-god Ulmo before the eyes of Tuor on the coast of Beleriand; and an exact description of the military organization of the Riders of Rohan. Unfinished Tales also contains the only story about the long ages of Numenor before its downfall, and all that is known about such matters as the Five Wizards, the Palantiri and the legend of Amroth. The tales were edited by Christopher Tolkien, who provides a short commentary on each story, helping the reader to fill in the gaps and put each story into the context of the rest of his father's writings. In celebration of its 40th anniversary, this jacketed hardcover of Unfinished Tales includes 18 gorgeous paintings depicting scenes from the First, Second, and Third Ages of Middle-earth from critically acclaimed Tolkien artists, Alan Lee, John Howe, and Ted Nasmith.
