Philadelphia: The Jewish Publication Society of America, 1973. Hardcover. vg. 8vo. xvi. 900pp. Blue cloth with silver lettering to spine. Color frontispiece of Mendelssohn. "Moses Mendelssohn (1729-1786), 'the German Socrates,' was the most celebrated figure of German Enlightenment in the second half of the eighteenth century and also, paradoxical as the fact seemed to some of his enlightened contemporaries, a scholar versed in Talmud and Hebrew literature who would come to be recognized as the inaugurator of a new phase in Jewish history." Near fine condition. Alexander Altmann was an Orthodox rabbi and academic scholar, who taught at Brandeis University. He is perhaps best known for his biography of Moses Mendelssohn. Altmann also wrote extensively on medieval Jewish philosophy, most notably Maimonides, but Saadiah Gaon and Isaac Israeli as well.
