Description
Paris: Antoine Verard, 1497. Leather bound. Fair+. Worn and ancient leather with vellum sheets. 215 x 145 mm Possibly lacking a frontis and a colophon. Text is 28 lines. Verard's printer's device within an architectural frame; + Anatomical Man within a frame; + 12 Large illustrations within a frame; and 4 with no frame. One of these was colored (with the old color somewhat gone). One or two illus are lightly printed and/or worn. A tear in one. A series of cuts (often repeated) frame each text page. Most initials are rubricated. The 28 lines match Macfarlane Antoine Vérard (1900), 251 (giving a date of 1511 (?), citing a copy on London vellum. These very remarkable hours which are unknown in Brunet's supplement have as their title an escutcheon with the legend of Antoine Verard in the middle of which is a heart inscribed with the monogram AVR above which rise the three fleurs-de-lys supported by two angels." (Bibliotheca Hulthemiana, 604). – Another copy listed: Madrid, Biblioteca Historica Complutense, BH FG 3797. Given that there are 28 line per page, rather than 32 found in a similar copy dated at 1510, it is not unreasonable to estimate this copy at 1507 or earlier. Very similar to Lot 5, sold by Drouot on March 22, 2022, though not as nicely colored. The book was printed sometime between 1497 and 1507.

1901. First Edition. (CURTIS, Edward) HARRIMAN ALASKA EXPEDITION. Alaska. Volume I: Narrative, Glaciers, Natives. Volume II: History, Geography, Resources. New York: Doubleday, Page, 1901. Two volumes. Tall octavo, original green cloth, top edges gilt, uncut, original cloth dust jackets. $5000.First edition account of the 1899 Harriman Expedition to Alaska, with 39 color plates (including 16 heliotype plates of coastal birds by Louis Agassiz Fuertes), 85 full-page photogravures (45 by Edward S. Curtis), five maps and numerous in-text illustrations. In 1899, railroad magnate Edward Henry Harriman assembled a team of 26 distinguished scientists and artists, among them C. Hart Merriam, chief of the U.S. Biological Survey, John Burroughs, the best selling nature writer of the day, John Muir, much-admired father of the American conservation movement, Louis Agassiz Fuertes, the nation's most notable ornithological painter since Audubon, and Edward S. Curtis, famous photographer of the North American Indian. Harriman took this group on a two-month survey along the 9,000-mile coast of British Columbia and Alaska, from the panhandle to the Bering Strait. The expedition returned with over 100 trunks of specimens and more than 5000 photographs and paintings. From this material the team produced 12 volumes (of a projected 14) of Alaskan natural history from the coastal region over the next 12 years. These are the first two volumes of their discoveries, including John Muir's ""The Pacific Coast Glaciers,"" George Bird Grinnell's ""Natives of the Alaska Coast Region"" and John Burroughs' 118-page ""Narrative of the Expedition."" ""History has shown that the Harriman Alaska Expedition lived up to all expectations: genera and species new to science were described, fossil species newly recorded, natural history collections created, and the Harriman Fiord surveyed for the first time. By any standard, the world's scientific and environmental portrait of Alaska was greatly enriched as a result of the 1899 Harriman Alaska Expedition"" (PBS). Wickersham 4013. Fine condition.

Description
1923. First Edition. STOPES, Marie Carmichael. Contraception. London: John Bale, Sons & Danielsson, 1923. Octavo, original green cloth, original dust jacket. $3200.First edition of the first British textbook on the theory, history, and provision of birth control by birth control advocate and sexologist Marie Stopes, the author of Married Love, in very scarce original dust jacket.""As a scientist, [Marie] Stopes is still a figure of some interest. Her major claim to fame, however, rests on her work as birth control advocate and sex educator. She played a unique and essential role in publicizing contraception and making it a topic for discussion. She created a new genre of marriage manual with Married Love, a book which literally changed lives"" (DNB). Though less famous than Married Love today, Contraception was similarly influential among the professional class of its time. Stopes offered medical and legal professionals the tools (and perhaps permission) to deal with contraception, popularizing the idea that contraception should no longer be taboo and that healthy, happy, desired babies were the proper outcome for British women. Her work on actual birth control devices, relied on heavily here, also changed the manner in which birth control was provided in Britain, placing control and indeed responsibility firmly in the hands of women. ""The first important English handbook on birth control"" (Garrison-Morton 1641.2). ""One of the first factual and unemotional discussions of the subject"" (Heirs of Hippocrates 2316). With an Introduction by Professor Sir William Bayliss and Introductory Notes by Sir James Barr, Dr. C. Rolleston, and Dr. Jane Hawthorne. Book with only light rubbing to extremities, dust jacket with faintest staining and light rubbing and toning to extremities. A near-fine copy.

Description
1662. First Edition. FULLER, Thomas. The History of the Worthies of England. Endeavoured by Thomas Fuller, D.D. London: J[ohn]. G[rismond]. W. L. and W[illiam]. G[odbid]., 1662. Folio (8-1/2 by 12-1/2 inches), 18th-century full paneled calf rebacked, elaborately gilt-decorated spine, raised bands, red morocco spine label, marbled endpapers, gilt armorial centerpiece on covers. $1400.First edition, with engraved frontispiece portrait of the author and featuring an early biography of Shakespeare, in nicely rebacked calf with armorial centerpieces. The Worthies of churchman and antiquarian Thomas Fuller appeared after his death in 1662, the fruits of much research; as he wrote, ""My pains have been scattered all over the land, by riding, writing, going, sending, chiding, begging, praying and sometimes paying too, to procure manuscript material"" (Drabble). The Worthies ""is among other things a dictionary of national biography, a series of county histories, a topographical and historical gazetteer, a guide-book, and a dictionary of proverbs"" (Bush, 233). It is also the source of many famous anecdotes, such as that of Sir Walter Raleigh laying down his cloak in a puddle so that Queen Elizabeth could walk across. In the section on Warwickshire is the fullest biography of Shakespeare that had been published at that time (three paragraphs in length): ""He was an eminent instance of the truth of that Rule, Poeta non fit, sed nascitur, one is not made but born a Poet. Indeed his Learning was very little, so that as Cornish diamonds are not polished by any Lapidary, but are pointed and smoothed even as they are taken out of the Earth, so nature it self was all the art which was used upon him"" (p. 126). Coleridge wrote that ""next to Shakespeare, I am not certain whether Thomas Fuller, beyond all other writers, does not excite in me the sense and emotion of the marvelous … you will hardly find a page in which some one sentence out of every three does not deserve to be quoted for itself as a motto or as a maxim"" (Allibone, I: 644). Wing, F2440. Pforzheimer, 391. Jaggard, 108. Bookplates, including that of Lord W. Kerr, likely of the long line of Kerrs who were marquesses of Lothian.Interior clean, binding in excellent condition, handsomely rebacked.

Description
N.p.: N.p., 1972. Vintage photograph of the illustration of five stewardesses for the 1972 3-D sexploitation film, which was used in the film's marketing campaign. Sequel to the 1969 hit 3-D softcore comedy "The Stewardesses, "the most profitable 3-D film ever released, written and directed by Allan Silliphant (credited as Alf Sillman Jr.). Hoping to follow on the success of its predecessor, this sequel has now been largely forgotten, largely because of cost-cutting measures of distributor company Sherpix in post-production, according to producer and 3-D pioneer Chris Condon. Twelve beautiful stewardesses are chosen for a three week trip around the world aboard Global Airlines Condor SST supersonic airplane. Set in and shot on location in Hong Kong, Lisbon, Athens, and Rome. 10 x 8 inches. Near Fine. Nilsen, Warped and Faded.
