Description
1931. ERNST, Max. Mr. Knife, Miss Fork. Text by René Crevel, translated by Kay Boyle. Including 19 photograms of frottages by Max Ernst. 8vo, 176 x 116 mm., bound in the original full black cloth, elaborately gilt and embossed designed by Ernst on covers with additional hand-painting, in an elegant half morocco box by Mercher. Paris: The Black Sun Press, 1931. A celebrated and rare surrealist collaboration. This is one of the special 50 copies on Hollande paper. The frontispiece is signed at the bottom by Max Ernst and the half-title signed by Crevel. For these special copies the front cover of the binding has been hand painted and the rear cover has been gilt, supposedly by Max Ernst. The nineteen photograms illustrating the book were produced from Max Ernst's frottages, created by rubbing translucent paper on top of a textured surface/image. Using this "impression" on the special paper, Ernst then shot light through the thin paper onto photosensitive paper underneath, creating a type of photographic negative. These were then reproduced in the form of negative photograms with the assistance of Man Ray. The resulting white lines and white designs set off against the pitch-black background set the perfect surrealist stage for Ernst's powerful and unsettling imagery. Without the original slipcase, slight restoration to the head of spine, but a fine bright copy, rarely found thus. PROVENANCE: the celebrated library of Daniel Filipacchi. Rainwater, Beyond Surrealism 30. Roth, The Book of 101 Books 66-67. Spies & Leppien, Max Ernst Das Graphische Werk 13. Description
San Francisco: The Arion Press, 2013. Hardcover. New. Hammer, Jonathan. Octavo, 10 1/4" by 7 3/8", 154 numbered pages plus 48 unnumbered pages for the illustrations (202 pages total). The type is Times New Roman, in Monotype composition by Mackenzie & Harris, with display sizes set by hand. The relief prints are printed from polymer plates made from negatives scratched by the artist with an etching needle for the black images, with photopolymer plates made from overlay drawings in pencil for the red tints. The paper is Zerkall Ivory Book, a German mould-made sheet. The binding, done in-house, is machine-sewn, with a maroon buckram spine titled in gold, and ochre buckram sides printed in maroon with images of the gate of Manor Farm on the back and the gate of Animal Farm on the front. The slipcase has ochre buckram edges, title in maroon on the spine, and maroon buckram sides. Edition of 300 numbered copies, plus 26 lettere copies hors de commerce, signed by the artist. There is an extra suite of twenty-four relief prints, the same images as appear in the book. The images were printed in black and hand-colored in red and one of four colors. The paper is Zerkall Natural white, 15 " by 12 1/2", encased is a portfolio covered in maroon buckram with an ochre titling label on the front. The suite is in an edition of 30 numbered sets, plus 5 artist's proofs and 5 publisher's proofs, with each print numbered and signed by the artist. Jonathan Hammer, before he became known as an artist, worked at Arion Press as a bookbinder. He studied fine binding and went on to produce very original and highly accomplished unique bindings, some in collaboration with other artists, such as John Baldessari. He also became a well-recognized visual artist, producing drawings, paintings, and sculpture. Hammer has been represented by prominent galleries and exhibited by museums internationally. Given the porcine theme of the novel, the witty artist made "meaty" images for Orwell's satire. ___POSTAGE: International customers, please note that additional postage may apply as the standard does not always cover costs; please inquire for details. ___Swan's Fine Books is pleased to be a member of the ABAA, ILAB, and IOBA and we stand behind every book we sell. The grand prospectus for James Linden's comprehensive volume on Adrian Wilson's printed ephemera. Adrian Wilson (1924-1988) is known to all lovers of beautiful books; he started printing with Jack Stauffacher in 1948, and two years later set up his own printing house, called "At the Sign of the Interplayers", in his home in San Francisco. In 1952 he opened a shop with other printers in downtown SF; he went to England to study in 1958-59 and upon his return did free-lance work for the University of California Press and others. He and his wife, Joyce Lancaster Wilson (nee Harvey) established The Press in Tuscany Alley and, amidst publishing a dizzying array of books and ephemera, Wilson also was a published author, with his "The Design of Books" being regarded as a classic text on book design. The book itself contains a comprehensive list of more than 500 ephemeral items; it was published in a limited edition of 85 copies, this prospectus includes two sample leaves tucked into a pocket at the rear. ___DESCRIPTION: Sewn binding, in heavy cardstock wraps with the illustration of a jester in four colours in the front wrap, back wrap with a flap that includes a short advertisement for the book written by Joyce Lancaster Wilson, the prospectus itself being two sheets, folded once to form four leaves, the first page with a vignette of a lady wearing a medieval style outfit, lettering in red and black, the second page serving as the frontispiece with a black and white photograph of the entrance to the press (by Michael Mundy, c. 1988), the third page serving as the title page in red and black, the fourth through sixth pages with a description of the book, another small vignette of a lady, printing in black and red, the seventh page being the price list for the book, the final page serving as colophon; folio size (large quarto size, just under 12" by 9"). Description
London: Harrison & Sons, Ltd, 1933. First Edition. Offprint, 8vo (251 x 176mm), pp. 10, plus 2 inserted plates. Original green printed wrappers, thread-bound, so light creasing, near fine. Signed by Walton on the front wrapper. Walton shared the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1951 with John Douglas Cockcroft for the first experimental splitting of an atomic nucleus by artificially accelerated particles; the moment at which humanity first demonstrated that the atomic nucleus was not merely observable but manipulable by means entirely under human control. This paper, received at the Cavendish Laboratory on August 1, 1933, belongs to the immediate and decisive sequel to that achievement. Where the original Cockcroft-Walton experiment established nuclear transmutation through ionization current measurements, this investigation provides its photographic proof: the tracks of the product nuclei made directly visible in a Wilson cloud chamber, their ranges measured, their kinematics checked against theory, and their identity placed beyond dispute. The reactions confirmed are the disintegration of lithium-7 by protons into two helium-4 nuclei, the disintegration of lithium-6 by deuterons into two helium-4 nuclei, and the disintegration of boron-11 by protons into three helium-4 nuclei, with observed particle ranges in close agreement with values calculated from the energy equation using the latest nuclear mass data. The two inserted plates reproduce the original cloud chamber photographs, providing the visual record on which the analysis rests. Nuclear physics is now the basis of every cancer radiotherapy treatment, every PET scan, and every nuclear power station; this paper is among the documents in which it became an experimental science rather than a theoretical one. The apparatus consisted of the Cockcroft-Walton high-voltage installation operating at potentials up to 400 kilovolts, combined with a standard Wilson expansion chamber 15 cm in diameter and 5 cm deep, photographed simultaneously by two cameras mounted at 30 degrees to the vertical and at 20 degrees to each other, with measurements made on images of the tracks reproduced in the relative positions in which they actually occurred. For the disintegration of lithium by protons, reaction (1), Li + H¹ yielding two He nuclei, four windows of 5 to 1 cm stopping power were mounted on grid (a) of Figure 2, giving a convenient length for track measurement; the mean value of the sum of the lengths of pairs of tracks taken from a number of photographs was 16.6 cm, and the average range of particles emitted in opposite directions was 8.3 cm, in good agreement with the theoretical value of 8.4 cm deduced from the absorption curves and with the value of 8.35 cm obtained by substituting the latest nuclear mass data into the energy relation; approximately 100 photographs were taken, and the number of opposite pairs far exceeds what chance could produce. For the disintegration of lithium by ions of the heavy isotope of hydrogen, reaction (2), Li + H² yielding two He nuclei, a sample of heavy hydrogen supplied by Lord Rutherford from Professor G. N. Lewis was passed into the discharge tube, and Figure 4 of Plate 14 shows the general character of the events; the value calculated from the energy equation is in very close agreement with the observed range of 13.2 cm previously reported by Oliphant, Kinsey and Rutherford. For the disintegration of boron by proton bombardment, reaction (3), B¹¹ + H¹ yielding three He nuclei, a piece of pyrex glass containing boron of 3 to 5 mm stopping power was used as target and over 100 photographs were taken; three-track events are reproduced on Plates 16 and 17, but because the majority of the measured three-track sets do not satisfy momentum conservation as accurately as expected, attributed to slight deflections in the mica windows of small residual range, the authors state that a full discussion of this disintegration is postponed to a later date. The two inserted plates, Plates 14 through 17 of the original volume, reproduce the cloud chamber photographs directly, providing the visual record on which the kinematic analysis rests.

Description
Paris: Journal de Physique et le Radium, 1927. FIRST EDITION. Original wrappers. Very Good. FIRST EDITION IN RARE ORIGINAL WRAPPERS of the presentation of de Broglie's highly influential "pilot-wave" interpretation of quantum mechanics. "What we now know as pilot-wave theory first appears in a paper by de Broglie (1927) entitled 'Wave mechanics and the atomic structure of matter and of radiation', which was published in Journal de Physique in May 1927... In 'Structure', de Broglie presents a theory of particles as moving singularities. It is argued, on the basis of certain assumptions, that the equations of what we now call pilot-wave dynamics will emerge from this theory. At the end of the paper de Broglie proposes, as a provisional theory, simply taking the equations of pilot-wave dynamics as given, without trying to derive them from something deeper. It is this last, provisional theory that de Broglie presents a few months later at the fifth Solvay conference..." (Bacciagaluppi and Valentini, Quantum Theory at the Crossroads). "In October 1927, some of the greatest minds in physics gathered for the Fifth Solvay International Conference to debate the troubling implications of the then-nascent theory of quantum mechanics. A particularly contentious topic was the perplexing 'wave-particle duality,' in which objects we typically think of as particles-like photons and electrons-exhibit wave-like properties as well, and things we think of as waves, like light, sometimes behave like particles. "The French physicist Louis de Broglie proposed a means by which a photon or electron could behave like both a particle and a wave, complementary aspects of the same phenomenon. He reasoned that the particles could be carried along by what he dubbed 'pilot waves'-fluid-like ripples in space and time-much like a buoys bobbing along with the tide. "Quantum mechanics seeks to describe nature at the level of individual atoms and the particles that comprise them. But when physicists began delving into this strange new realm at the dawn of the 20th century, they discovered that the old, deterministic laws of classical physics no longer apply at that scale. Instead, uncertainty reigns supreme. It is a world governed by probabilities, and many physicists found this disquieting, to say the least... "De Broglie's alternative pilot wave theory was an attempt to restore [the] underlying solid reality. Instead of the wave function, de Broglie's pilot wave theory employs two equations, one describing an actual wave and the other describing the path of an actual particle and how it interacts with, and is guided by, the wave equation. It is deterministic, like a classical coin flip. In principle, at least, we can glean sufficient information to plot a particle's path, something that is not allowed in Bohr's interpretation of quantum mechanics" (Jennifer Ouellette, "Quantum Physicists Catch a Pilot Wave", Nova: The Nature of Reality). In 1952 David Bohm rediscovered de Broglie's work and further developed it. It is now known as the de Broglie-Bohm theory and is a much-debated approach to quantum mechanics today. IN: Journal de Physique et le Radium, Ser. VI, Vol. VIII, No. 5, May 1927. Octavo, original printed wrappers; custom box. Some chips to wrappers and wear to spine; rear wrapper neatly detached along joint, but now held in place by removable mylar. RARE.

Very good plus.
Description
[N.p., likely Washington, D.C., 1870. Very good plus.. 8; 8; 8pp. In English and Spanish. Gathered signatures, each stitched separately. Very minor edge wear and toning. A trio of separate claims by American companies and individuals involved in selling arms to the Mexican government in the mid-19th century. Two of the claims come from the Sharps Rifle Manufacturing Company, while the third was filed by the legal counsel of Sanderson Brothers and Company, who had assumed debts owed to the Robbins and Lawrence Company of Windsor, Vermont, who had previously manufactured Minie rifles sold to the Mexican government. The claims from Sharps were filed by the company's President, John C. Palmer and an investor named James T. Ames, who had assumed a claim against Mexico from a Sharps salesman who owed him money. Palmer, on behalf of the Sharps Company, asked the Joint Commission for almost $30,000 (including the portion owed to Ames) while Ames made a separate claim for his $14,223. The Sanderson claim amounted to almost $10,000, including interest. Each of the three claimants also asked for reimbursement of fees for making these claims, between and thousand and fifteen hundred dollars. These claims resulted from the need to settle numerous debts held by both American and Mexican entities against each other, following the expulsion of the French from Mexico in 1867. Many of these claims were long-standing since the agreement reached in the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo. All three of the present claims stemmed from transactions of rifles in 1859, for which only partial cash payment had been made at the time of the purchase.

Donning a red wig to cover her platinum blonde hair, Jean Harlow moved to star status at MGM. In this rare behind-the-scenes image, we see her at work seducing boss Chester Morris on a set consisting of a tiny phone booth, as director Jack Conway and crew do their creative jobs.

A presentable hardcover in dust jacket. ABOUT THIS BOOK: An anecdotal guide for the perplexed new investigator as well as a refreshing resource for the old pro, covering everything from valuable personality traits for an investigator to social factors conducive to scientific work. Santiago Ramón y Cajal was a mythic figure in science. Hailed as the father of modern anatomy and neurobiology, he was largely responsible for the modern conception of the brain. His groundbreaking works were New Ideas on the Structure of the Nervous System and Histology of the Nervous System in Man and Vertebrates. In addition to leaving a legacy of unparalleled scientific research, Cajal sought to educate the novice scientist about how science was done and how he thought it should be done. This recently rediscovered classic, first published in 1897, is an anecdotal guide for the perplexed new investigator as well as a refreshing resource for the old pro. Cajal was a pragmatist, aware of the pitfalls of being too idealistic-and he had a sense of humor, particularly evident in his diagnoses of various stereotypes of eccentric scientists. The book covers everything from valuable personality traits for an investigator to social factors conducive to scientific work.(Publisher).
