Description
LOWELL, ROBERT. (1917-1977). American poet, essayist, and translator. TPCS. ("Robert Lowell"). 1p. 12mo. (New York), N.d. To the American poet, BABETTE DEUTSCH (1895-?). Do send me the form for May Swenson. She is a true poet and I hope she makes it this time. American poet May Swenson (1919-1989), is remembered for her masterful portrayals of nature and daily life, seen in such volumes as Another Animal, A Cage of Spines, Iconographs, and two collections of children's verse. She received numerous grants and awards; our postcard hints at Lowell's endorsement of her nomination for one of these. Signed in his typical spiky hand, and in fine condition.

Description
1906: Scribner's, 1906. Framed. Fine. A most evocative early 20th century promotional poster issued by Scribner's with its cover art for the September 1906 issue of its monthly magazine. Featuring a comely well-dressed woman, all in white, including her parasol, intently reading, possibly a missive from a man courting her. The artist is bold in the utter simplicity of the imagery, and his trusting a washed out palette, here suggestive of a sun-drenched day of late Summer. With its simple wood frame, 60 by 40.5 cm. Visible, 57 by 38 cm. This is the original 1906 poster, not a reprint. Minor spots of soiling. We have not examined the poster outside its frame.

Description
[Wilkes-Barre, Pa: Smith-Bennett Corp., 1927. Scarce First Edition. A collection of letter tributes to Kirby and presented in this book form during a 1927 Christmas Party at the Hotel Sterling in Wilkes-Barre. Fred Morgan Kirby [1861-1940] was from Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania and the founder of the F. M. Kirby & Co. 5 & 10-cent Store chain and a philanthropist. Kirby’s company was a major rival of the much larger F. W. Woolworth & Co. and the two businesses merged in 1912. Fred Kirby became a Vice President of the F. W. Woolworth & Co., which was listed on the New York Stock Exchange. The financial success of the F.W. Woolworth chain gave Fred Kirby, in the early decades of the twentieth century, an estimated fortune of approximately thirty to fifty million dollars. This enabled the businessman to establish the Fred Morgan Kirby Foundation. He became a shareholder in many other corporations, including the Allegheny Railroad Company. He was also well-respected for his philanthropic spirit and he was a major benefactor to Wilkes-Barre, the town where his success began. He donated the money for a community health center in memory of his mother, Angeline Elizabeth Slater Kirby. He also donated the money for a park and its upkeep to be in the center of Wilkes-Barre as well as numerous other cultural institutions throughout the city. In addition to these philanthropic activities, Fred Kirby became one of Lafayette College’s foremost benefactors. By far, his most significant endowments to the college were for the establishment of the Fred Morgan Kirby Professorship of Civil Rights in 1921 and for the construction of the Kirby Hall of Civil Rights in 1929. The book contains laudatory letters from political leaders, businessmen and religious leaders. A very scarce book!. Quarto, brown limp faux-leather; unpaginated. Assembled and Presented by Hugh Weir.. Very Good (covers nice; contents clean & tight).

1923. Boston and New York: Houghton Mifflin Company, 1923. 8vo, 279 pp. 8 color plates. Navy cloth with illustrated plate to upper board, gilt decoration and lettering to backstrip. A very good copy with light rubbing to the board corners. ß Riverside Bookshelf series. First published in 1870, Aldrich's semi-autobiographical novel follows the mischievous adventures of Tom Bailey, a young boy growing up in a fictional New England town during the mid-1800s. The book was a pioneer in "bad boy" literature, which rejected the overly moralistic tone of its predecessors and attempted a more humorous and realistic portrayal of childhood. Mark Twain's Tom Sawyer followed.

Rogers' article appears on pp.94-101; as one would expect, Rogers is critical of Existential technique, which he blames for the subject's eventual suicide. The article was first delivered as a talk at an AAP symposium on "The Loneliness of Contemporary Man" in 1961. Other contributors to this issue include L.J. Rather, Gerard Haigh, Leslie Farber, and others.

Winona, Minnesota: J. R. Watkins Company, 1920. Very good. First edition, n. d. (ca 1920); 5 1/4 x 4 1/4; pp. 2-31; pictorial beige wraps, decorated and ruled in blue and black; illustrated with numerous photographs and drawings; a few small spots to wraps; pp. 17-18 with a bit of rubbing to upper margin; in very good condition. A cheerful catalog of a great variety of products it was published by the J. R. Watkins Company - one of the largest direct-sales companies in the United States by the early 20th century. Founded by J. R. Watkins in 1868, the company began manufacturing the original J. R. Watkins Liniment for minor muscle aches and stiffness, which would be sold door-to-door and is still available today. The direct-sales model would popularize the door-to-door salesman, known as "the Watkins Man" - a traveling Watkins employee, who would travel all across the US in a horse-and-wagon and later - in an automobile, giving the customers a chance to personally select the products they needed. The company's line of products would expand to include baking ingredients and spices, patent medicines, cleaning supplies, toiletries, and so on. The current catalog contained examples of all of the above, as well as gardening and household hints, articles on how to stay fit and on the history of cinnamon, etc.
