Hand colored lithograph view of South Boston looking north from Telegraph Hill (the site of the Fortification of Dorchester Heights by Henry Knox during the seige of Boston) toward Beacon Hill. The old reservoir can be seen to the left. Today one would be looking at the front of South Boston High School from this location. Includes five inset views of homes of prominent citizens and Fort Independence. Lightly toned overall with a few scoring marks from previous wood backing and faint dampstaining in upper right hand corner. A nicely repaired 4-inch closed tear in upper right corner.

[6], 411, [1]pp. Contemporary half morocco over marbled paper covered boards, with gold lettering to spine. Raised bands. Top edge gilt. Marbled endpapers. Original printed wrappers bound in. First edition of About's memoirs of his travel to an Egypt under the reign of Ismail the Magnificent (Ismail-Pacha), in the 1860s. The author claims to be the friend of Ismail-Pacha, and this work is his description of the fellah (native paesant) at work for the powerful Khedive of Egypt and Sudan. Binding partly age-toned and rubbed along edges. Original wrappers sunned. Minor and sporadic foxing throughout. Ex-library copy, with reference sticker at upper front joint and tail of spine, stamp at top and bottom paper edges, bookplate on inside of front cover and pocket at rear. Text in French. Binding in overall good, interior in very good condition.
