Amazing text and full-page wood engravings by Moser. Bound in the publisher’s half-maroon goat over decorated boards, gilt lettering to spine. Also with the addition suite of 92 plates, each signed by Moser. The entirety contained in the publisher’s folding quarter-maroon goat clamshell case, gilt lettering to spine. Laid in is the original hand-printed prospectus announcing the publication. Both volumes in excellent condition, as if never opened. The Pennyroyal Press editions of Alice’s adventures in Wonderland and Through the looking-glass. Both are Number 102 of 350 copies printed. “Published in 1982, Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland was Moser’s 60th book, but the first project that he had done on this scale. He had been commissioned to do wood engravings for the Albion Press’ Moby Dick in 1979 and it convinced him he could tackle a large and complex project on his own. He conducted a survey of friends, artists, collectors, and book dealers as to what project they would most like to see and Alice was chosen overwhelmingly (save a few voices that said Do anything, just DON’T do Alice!). Dark and whimsical, it was a far cry from Tenniel’s well known little blonde girl. Moser’s Alice is a mischievous brunette with hair getting in her eyes. She’s about 9, just about the age that little Alice Liddell would have been.” The 1983 American Book Award for design was awarded to the Pennyroyal Alice.

Description
Paris: J.-B. Baillière et fils, 1857. SECOND AND FIRST EDITIONS. Later sheep-backed boards, spine gilt. Somewhat foxed, but otherwise very good. Typographic tables in the text. Two foundational texts in the forensic history of sex crimes. The first, offered here in its second edition, explores the medical and legal natures of flashing, rape, sexual assault, pederasty, and sodomy. The study defines the terms of sex crime vocabulary to establish consistency in related cases, with lengthy entries for deflowering, debauchery, and penetration, and it sets the range for what should be considered underage. Tardieu attempts to prove a typology of the sex criminal: hyper masculine, mentally unstable, and violent, often with a misshapen penis. In the final part of the text, he notes the transmission of STIs as a result of rape as a legal addendum and gives 21 case studies of criminal sex acts. The second title, here in its first edition, is the first French legal study on abortion. Abortion was an unmitigated crime in France at the time, but as Tardieu explains, the high rate of stillbirths made it difficult to determine which were purposefully inflicted. Here he describes eight different methods of abortion and supplies several case studies of each, including chemical descriptions of abortive medications. He stresses the culpability of “wise women” who provide the necessary supplies and instructions for abortions and implores that they be strictly watched by law enforcement. This text was the medico-legal authority in France for the next 60 years. Both titles are rare: OCLC records 4 institutional copies of Étude médico-légale sur les attentats aux moeurs in the U.S. (Penn, NY Academy of Medicine, Chicago, and Michigan) and only one copy of Étude médico-légale sur l’avortement (Penn). Description
Paris: Chez les Principaux Libraires, 1830. FIRST EDITION. Lithographed frontispiece portrait, lacking in most copies. Contemporary half gilt blue morocco over marbled boards, top edge gilt, green silk marker. Ex-libris bookplate of T. Froissart. Some minor foxing, otherwise a very nice copy. First edition of this curious autobiography written by a noblewoman convinced that she was the rightful heir to the French throne. Although published in Paris, the French police almost immediately suppressed this book’s dissemination to the public due to the audacious claims made therein. Maria Stella Chiappini was born into an unwealthy household in Modigliana, nearTuscany; her father was a jailer and her mother “barbaric.” They forced her into stage performance in the Venetian opera at age 13, where she caught the eye of Englishman Thomas Wynn, the First Baron Newborough. Maria Stella’s parents were thrilled to marry her off to the much older baron. He died in 1807, leaving his enormous fortune to Maria Stella, who quickly remarried a younger Russian baron. In 1821, while traveling in Italy, she learned of the death of her father, and found a letter he wrote alleging that she was not his daughter. He claimed that a noble French couple found themselves in Modigliana when the wife gave birth to a daughter, not the son they desired. Maria Stella’s “mother” had just given birth to a son, and they arranged to swap babies if the French couple paid them handsomely. Maria Stella immediately attempted to discover her true parents, squandering her fortune hiring lawyers, notaries, and seers who claimed they could assist in her investigation and traveling across Europe in search of documentation. About half the text recounts this wild ride. She convinced herself that her birth parents were Philippe d’Orléans, cousin of Louis XVI, and his wife Louis Marie Adélaïde de Bourbon. Their legitimate son, Louis Philippe, became King the same year this book was published, and Maria Stella asserts here that he is a usurper, “a boy of the most vile condition.” Maria Stella moved to Paris to further her campaign for the throne, rebranding herself “Marie-Étoile d’Orléans.” She would post caricatures of the king and written insults against him in the windows of her apartments. She went quite mad and refused to leave home for the last five years of her life, fearing retribution from the king. Oberlé, Petite nécropole littéraire ch. 91.

Description
London: E. Curll & J. Pemberton, 1716. FIRST EDITION. Woodcut head- and tailpieces. An excellent copy in period-style full calf. First edition. Published by “the unspeakable Curll.” The compositions include Blackmore’s essays on epic poetry, wit, false virtue, immortality of the soul, laws of nature, and origin of civil power. Blackmore (1650-1729) was a prolific writer in verse and prose. Though he authored medical treatises and theological works, he was probably one of the most unjustly ridiculed writers of the eighteenth century. He was a supporter of the Revolution and was knighted in 1697. He served as personal physician to both William III and to Queen Anne. He was quite highly regarded by Dr. Johnson as one of “the first favorites of the English muse”; Johnson was later to write a biography of Blackmore.

London: John Stockdale, 1794. Second. hardcover. 3 volumes. [4], 8, xxxii, [3]-392; [4], 451, [1 binder's directions]; [4], 528, [36 index] pages. Frontispiece portrait in first volume, and half titles (History of the Principal Republics in the World) in all volumes; folding map "Chart of the River Scheldt" bound in volume two. 8vo, handsomely bound in 19th Century 3/4 mottled calf with ornately gilt-stamped spines and red labels; marbled boards and matching endpapers. London: John Stockdale, 1794. Second complete edition. Lightly inked names on half title and title pages, else perfectly clean with no foxing present; joints neatly re-enforced, still a near fine copy of this landmark book. Labelled "A new edition" this is in fact the definitive second complete edition, published 3 years before the American edition [The first printings were printed 1787-1788]. The work comprises an important series of letters from the American patriot and soon-to-be second President, defending the U.S. Constitution from European criticisms of the doctrine of legislative balance. Adams compares the constitutions of the various states of the Union, and of the Union itself, with those of foreign countries and ancient cultures. Adams wrote these works while Minister to Britain, admiring their parliamentary system, but praising the U.S. Constitution as "admirably calculated to preserve the Union". -- Howes A-60; Sabin 233.

Seller
Black Swan Books, Inc. (United States)
Description
Ten typed pages, the first of which is on the letterhead of Miller & Rhoads Incorporated, an apparently executed contract between the venerable Richmond department store and Richmond’s Monroe Realty Corporation for the construction a new one-story store approximately 30,000 of “modern fireproof construction” “appropriately heated and air-conditioned and sprinklered to meet Factory Assurance Association standards” to be a major player in the Brook Hill Azalea Shopping Center on Chamberlayne Avenue.~~Of interest is the clause (#9) that “The Owner will not during the term of the Miller & Rhoads’ lease, or any renewal thereof, permit any store within the Shopping Center to be used or occupied, directly or indirectly by any other home furnishings type store carrying furniture, rugs, major appliances, radios and televisions, and/or similar merchandise classifications. Owner likewise will not,~during the term of Miller & Rhoads’ lease, knowingly permit any “discount” store to operate within the Shopping Center.”~~The contract was signed and notarized on page 10. The signers were Edwin Hyde, President of Miller & Rhoads; Thomas P. Bryan, Secretrary; and for the Monroe Realty Corp., Franklin D. Robins, President and Clarke Jones, Vice President/Secretary. The contract is dated May 10, 1966.~~A relic from the days when the big department stores were attempting to establish footholds in the suburbs.

New York: Edward O. Jenkins, Printer, 1869. First edition. A little rubbed and bumped, with the head of the spine a little frayed; in very good condition. 8vo (9/38 x 6.25 inches), original blind-stamped brown cloth, gilt lettering, [i-ii], [1-4], [3]-615, [1] pages. Lithograph frontis portrait, inserted engraved plate. Midland Notes 96: "He arrived in St Clairsville, Ohio, in 1817, and became closely associated with Benjamin Lundy, in the Union Humane Society; one of the country's first anti-slavery societies; later giving financial support to Lundy's Genuis of Universal Emancipation." The biographical sketch here includes much on Genin's abolitionist efforts. This volume also collects Genin's early poetical work, the Napolead--a blank-verse epic which, in the words of William Cooper Howells (father of the novelist Wm. Dean Howells) was published because Genin "had money enough to spare in printing a book that was never to be sold." (The elder Howells was an apprentice in the St. Clairsville print shop with the original edition of the Napolead was produced.) Lib. Company. Afro-Americana 4065; Sabin 26944. An ex-library copy, with the small Middlebury College label on the front pastedown (stamped withdrawn) and their early ink autograph accession note on the front free endpaper opposite. Shelfmark numbers added to the spine in white ink, with traces of adhesive residue, and an old circulation slip and paper strip in the rear endpapers.

One Second Draft script for "The Masked Offender" and one Final Draft script for "Things That Go Piglet in the Night", presented together as Season 1 Episode 14 of the 1988-1991 television series. Description
Cambridge, Mass: The Old Mole, [1969] First edition. Original undated special issue of the underground newspaper, with "There is some shit we will not eat - Strike" in black on red to the first page, and a red symbol combining the clenched fist and the female symbol in the background of the text on the second and third pages. Poor, in three (nearly four) pieces, separated along fold lines, with considerable chipping to edges and center, and some loss to text. Overall, a visually arresting issue of this radical publication. The Old Mole was a radical New Left newspaper that ran from September 1968 to September 1970, staffed mostly by current and former Harvard students. This issue examines several of the 337 schools on strike across the United States, information on the purpose and power of striking, and a column on Cambodia. The phrase on the first page, "There is some shit we will not eat," comes from e. e. cummings' poem "i Sing of Olaf glad and big," which centers on a conscientious objector. The 1969 Harvard strike centered on a number of concerns by Harvard students and members of the Harvard chapter of the Students for a Democratic Society (SDS), most notably rent increases and Harvard expansion, the prominent role of the ROTC on campus (and, more generally, Harvard's involvement in the Vietnam War), and the lack of a Black Studies department at Harvard. On April 9th, 1969, several hundred protesting students occupied University Hall. Harvard president Nathan Pusey called in the police to remove the protesters, and a violent clash ensued, which resulted in many student arrests and injuries. This event was followed by an eight-day strike by students and faculty. In the wake of the strike, the ROTC was demoted to an extracurricular activity and eventually phased out of Harvard completely for the remainder of the Vietnam War, and a Department of Afro-American Studies (later re-named the department of African and African American Studies) was established. . First Edition. Newspaper. Poor. [4] p. 23" x 17".
