Oxford: np, 1952. First edition. nb. Very Good. ONE OF THE FINEST C.S. LEWIS LETTERS TO APPEAR ON THE MARKET, OFFERING INSIGHT INTO THE CREATION OF THE CHRONICLES OF NARNIA. WITH MENTION OF TOLKIEN'S "THE HOBBIT" AS A FAVORITE BOOK. Between the publication of the second (Prince Caspian) and third (The Voyage of the Dawn Treader) books in his masterpiece series, "The Chronicles of Narnia," Lewis writes to a group of school children, revealing his thoughts about the series and his plans for the remaining books. Over the course of the letter, Lewis: -regrets that Peter and Susan are not returning to Narnia ("they are now getting to the age at which people stop having that sort of adventure for a time"); -offers a preview of the new book, The Voyage of the Dawn Treader ("Lucy and Edmund find Caspian (now King of course) on board ship, sailing to the Eastern end of the Narnian world. There will be lots about Reepicheep. And there will be a Sea Serpent, and a Dragon, and lots of strange islands."); -announces that there will be seven books in the series and that they will be called "The Chronicles of Narnia"; -discusses the sixth book (revealing that the Professor must have known all along about the existence of the magic wardrobe); -tantalizingly reveals that the series is very much a work in progress, and that he does not yet know how it will end ("I don't know yet what will happen in the seventh. What do you think would be a good thing to end the whole series with? Of course Aslan will come into them all."); -lists some books he particularly likes, including Tolkien's The Hobbit and Kenneth Grahame's The Wind in the Willows. The letter reads in full: Magdalen College Oxford May 22. 1952 My dear grittletonians - Thanks for your nice and interesting letters. Like you, I am sorry that Peter and Susan are not going back to Narnia, but I think, being the two eldest, they are now getting to the age at which people stop having that sort of adventure for a time - they may start having it again later, but not for some years. The new book is called The Voyage of the Dawn Treader. Lucy and Edmund find Caspian (now King of course) on board ship, sailing to the Eastern end of the Narnian world. London: Printed for W. Webb, 1742. First edition. Bound to style in 19th century sheep with morocco and gilt to spines. Measuring 168 x 96mm and with occasional mispagination but collating complete: xxiv, 300; [2], 336. Some offsetting to preliminary and terminal leaves and occasional light foxing and marginal chips not affecting text; discreet archival repairs to short tear on pages 115-116 and long tear to 285-286 of volume I preserving all text. Early amateur cloth tape repair to recto of front endpaper to volume II. Pinholes to lower spines of both volumes with minor associated worming to the lower front hinges. A scarce example of early erotic literature centered on London's famous courtesans, ESTC lists only 6 copies with institutions. The present copy aside, the last example to appear at auction was in 1882. Published two years apart, the two volumes of Memoirs of the Nobility are different in their approaches to London's elite, including the infamous Great Impures who hosted the wealthiest men in their parlours and their beds. Volume I launches its readers into a thinly veiled satire, wherein the protagonist Aloisa visits the mythical kingdom of Thule. During her tour on arrival, Aloisa discovers a city of extreme decadence whose cast of characters would be familiar to most Londoners (indeed, the copy housed at the British Museum has contemporary annotations from William Cole, denoting some of the avatars' real-life identities). "there was scarce a Thing as a Virgin of twenty Years of Age to be found in all the Island...all was flaming Lust; and from the Court to the Cottage all had their Share in amorous Intrigues." While sexual violence is rampant in Thule (Aloisa's host, the Chevalier Faire-Franc, informs her of numerous girls assaulted and left pregnant by the son of the new Lord Chancellor, for example), much of the kingdom's activities center on the sex trade. Ambition and wealth drive residents "to get Money, which at Night they as lavishly spend" at various houses of pleasure. In these descriptions, readers visit the brothels of such real-life bawds as Mother Elizabeth Wisebourn (here called Madona), who dresses as a nun to recruit girls and uses medicine and magic to "restore" their virginity and continuously demand the highest prices -- a practice she infamously used to market her girls, particularly Sally Salisbury and Sally Lodge before they rose to success in their own rights. Nearby, Miss Edwards of Kensington (possibly Kitty Fisher or Lucy Cooper) resides "in open Fornication" yet "defies all Scandal." A string of famous men -- authors, dignitaries, and gentry -- are also exposed for their engagement with courtesans, their elopements, and their affairs. By volume II, these details fade and the stories shift toward a more general erotic fantasy. But both notably participate in celebrating and expressing anxiety about the growing power of London's sex trade. With estimates of London's sex workers ranging widely from 8,600-80,000, it was undeniable that a vast portion of the population was engaged in sex-for-money whether as a provider or consumer (Rogers). The money and public influence of courtesans like Kitty Fisher, Lucy Cooper, Sally Salisbury, Sophia Baddeley, Mary Robertson and others highlighted how women who defined traditional marriage economies could carve out their own wealth, independence and community. [Risbury, Herefordshire]: The Whittington Press, 2018. First and Limited Edition. Leather bound. Fine. No. 14 of 40 copies of the "A" edition with accompaniments (see below); folio size, 100 pp., in a leather-backed solander case. In his typical fashion, John Randle has done a masterful job presenting insights into the life of Vance Gerry with this extensive bibliography of his printed work. Vance Gerry (1929-2005) was one of California’s least known and most accomplished printers, who operated his Weather Bird Press from 1967 to 2005. John Randle, publisher of "Matrix" and accomplished printer in his own right, gives Vance high praise: "Until his death in 2005 he produced a steady stream of the most understated, beautifully printed and ravishingly illustrated books from any private press, ever." Vance studied art at the Chouinard Art Institute in Los Angeles and learned the art of storytelling at Walt Disney Productions where he was employed as a storyboard artist. Vance combines this training with his immense passion and personal talent for art in his printing with amazing results. Most of his printing was produced in small editions and is notoriously difficult to find in today’s market. Vance shunned the spotlight and never sought to promote his work yet the beauty of his books and printing deserves lasting recognition; John Randle has done a wonderful job documenting Vance’s many accomplishments and ensuring his legacy in the history of fine printing will not be forgotten. Three different versions of this bibliography were published, this copy no. 14 of 40 of the "A" edition, bound in full Oasis by the Fine Book Bindery; it has a tipped-in colour frontispiece portrait after a watercolor of Mary, Vance's wife, plus thirty other illustrations from various sources including line drawings, linocuts, wood engravings, and twelve pages of twenty-six colour reproductions of Vance's pochoir illustrations. The items which accompany the book are comprised of: (i) a portfolio of ephemera found in Vance's workshop after his death; (ii) a facsimile of one of his best (and most sought after) publications, "Jazz"; and (iii) a portfolio of facsimilies of correspondence of Vance's; see below for details. This deluxe version already out of print, all copies being subscribed for prior to publication, and is absolutely stunning in its presentation. ___DESCRIPTION: Bibliography is bound in full coral-coloured Oasis leather by the Fine Book Bindery with gilt lettering on the spine, fore- and bottom edges rough-cut, ivory suede pastedowns, orange-and-white patterned free endpapers, the frontis and additional illustrations as set forth above, with two pieces of ephemera contained within a pocket at the rear pastedown (facsimiles of a hand-written note by Vance Gerry dated Jan 11/92, complete with facsimile coffee stains; and "Endpaper of Twenty-five Years of the Weather Bird Press (1993) signed by Vance & Mary Gerry and their guests..."); types Poliphilus and Ariston printed on Zerkall mould-made paper, folio size (13.5" by 9 5/8"), pagination: [i-x] 1-90, no. 14 of the 40 deluxe "A" edition copies (total edition 235). Included with the bibliography are: (i) a wallet containing twenty-four items (n.b., the list mounted to the front of the wallet) of Weather Bird ephemera found in Vance's workshop after his death, the wallet of quarter coral-coloured cloth, with orange-patterned paper sides matching the free endpapers, a list of included ephemera mounted on the left, and the ephemera pieces themselves contained within a pocket on the right; (ii) a facsimile edition of "Jazz Instruments, A Weather Bird Press Picture Portfolio" comprised of twelve bifoliums, the first serving as the title page and introduction, the final providing a "Glossary of Names" and the colophon, the other ten presenting Vance's inimitable illustrations of various jazz instruments being played in at times whimsical ways, the bifoliums contained within a cardstock folder with three flaps, which has a brown hand-made paper wrapper with the title in orange on the front, which itself is contained within an orange paper wallet with a paper label on the front mirroring the wrapper; and (iii) a portfolio of fifteen facsimiles of Vance's letters and a sixteenth item being a small facsimile of the invitation to the "gathering of friends to celebrate the life of Vance Gerry (1929-2005)", these items contained within an orange cardstock wallet with a paper label mounted on the front showing a facsimile of the Whittington Press's address written in Vance Gerry's hand, on the letterhead of The Weather Bird Press. All housed in a custom solander box covered in orange cloth, a leather back with gilt lettering, and lined with orange velvet. ___CONDITION: Fine; the bibliography clean, the leather binding smooth and supple, the interior clean and bright, and entirely free of prior owner markings; the components clean and free of any wear or flaws; the sole condition issue being a few of the pieces of ephemera having some minor edgewear which was likely incurred during storage in Vance Gerry's workshop. 18 vols. Small 8vo, various orig. wrappers or self-bound. Bamberg & Würzberg: 1809-1818. Joseph Martin Goebhardt (1709-57) founded this bookselling company about 1747,the year he issued his first catalogue. He was succeeded by his son Tobias (1734-94), who capitalized on the demand for Italian and French works, regardless of their contents or the controversy they might cause with German censors. The Goebhardts were among the first in Germany to publish works by Diderot, d’Alembert, Helvetius, etc. Their considerable trade and publication of foreign books made them one of the primary conduits of French-German cultural exchange in the mid-18th century. This caused Bamberg’s censors to investigate them, but they seem to have escaped punishment after Tobias pretended to be unfamiliar with French. Notably, the family served as the official supplier of scholarly books to Bamberg’s university. Tobias’s son Joseph Anton Goebhardt (n.d.) became the head of the company in 1802. Goebhardt was the first publisher of Hegel’s Phänomenologie des Geistes (1807), but soon afterwards the business began to fail, and control was ceded to Joseph’s brother-in-law, Franz Ignaz Heinrich von Hefner (1756-1846), who later sold it to Carl Christian Ettlinger, a local competitor. The present catalogues, each with hundreds of listings, were compiled towards the end of the firm’s existence. This includes a complete set of the monthly catalogues published serially for the year 1817, devoted to literature; it is interesting to note that the Goebhardts maintained their tradition of dealing in French literature. Another set comprises the four issues of the firm’s “Literarischer Anzeiger” for 1818, offering newly published German works. A very interesting collection of scarce German bookseller catalogues from the early 19th century. These come from the Wittelsbach library at Tegernsee, the “summer home” library of the royal family of Bavaria. New Haven, CT: L.Candee & Co., 1880. Very good. Die-cut trade card, n. d. (second half of the 19th century); 3 1/4 x 5 3/4; chromolithographed card stock, single sheet, die-cut and folded to resemble a closed candy box; light wear to edges and minor spotting; in very good condition. A beautiful advertisement, it employed a clever play-on-words, with the upper panel showing several ladies with parasols, the lower - a pile of boots with two naked cherubs rolling in it, and the text: "We all wear the Candee Rubbers...A box of Candee's." The L. Candee Company was incorporated in 1852 with four partners, with Leverett Candee (1795 – 1865) as President. He had been manufacturing elastic suspenders and rubber shoes solo since the early 1840s. They would obtain the first license to use Goodyear patent for making rubber shoes, obtained from Charles Goodyear himself. The company would grow to be the largest manufacturer of rubber footwear in the world.
