Description
Watertown [New York]: Knowlton & Rice, 1830. Duodecimo (13.5 x 17.5 cm.), v, 120 pages. Table of contents at rear. FIRST EDITION. It has been suggested that the authors of this book are George Willard Knowlton (one half of the team of Knowlton & Rice) and his wife, Elizabeth Carroll. The book is clearly intended for the "American Publick" as it states in the introduction. Within you will find no “English, French and Italian methods of rendering things indigestible, which are of themselves innocent, or of distorting and disguising the most loathsome objects to render them sufferable to already vitiated tastes... These evils are attempted to be avoided. Good republican dishes and garnishing, proper to fill an every day bill of fare, from the condition of the poorest to the richest individual.” ~ Some foxing throughout and staining to a few central leaves, but overall nearly very good, Minor annotations throughout text. In printer's original scale board binding with titled sugar paper over patterned cloth. Title and floral design to front and rear paper-covered boards. The binding is worn, and both front and rear scale boards are split horizontally and show signs of an early tape repair; the patterned brown cloth on the spine is also worn. Nonetheless, it remains an intriguing and attractive object. Ownership inscription to free front endpaper, "Lucinda Duncanson, Ithaca July 23d 1833". Duncanson was the grandmother of Harry Burleigh (1866-1949), the "first black composer who was instrumental in developing characteristically American music, Burleigh made black music available to classically trained artists both by introducing them to spirituals and by arranging spirituals in a more classical form.[3] Burleigh also introduced Antonín Dvo ák to Black American music, which influenced some of Dvo ák's most famous compositions and led him to say that Black music would be the basis of an American classical music" (Wikipedia). Burleigh's grandfather, who was blind, received manumission from his enslavement in Somerset County, Maryland, and walked with his mother to Ithaca about 1832. He and his new wife Lucinda worked as house servants there, and in Lansing, New York, to which they moved before their first child, Elizabeth Lovey Waters, the mother of Harry Burfield, was born. We have never seen an early American cookbook with African-American provenance, and very rare thus. [OCLC locates twelve copies of this first edition; American Imprints 1007; Bitting, page 536; not in Cagle; Lowenstein 127].

Description
London; [Edinburgh]: Maclaren & Sons, 37 and 38 Shoe Lane; [Printed by Turnbull & Spears, 1903. Quarto (29 x 23 cm.), 360 pages. Illustrated, with twelve full-page color illustrations, eight tipped-in half-tones; and two tipped-in gelatin silver prints; additional illustrations in the text. Advertisements. Index. FIRST TRADE EDITION, first or "subscribers' issue", differentiated from the second or ordinary issue by twenty-four additional pages, mostly advertisements and a list of subscribers to the deluxe edition with decorated endpapers (which in the ordinary issue are plain), as well as a different decorative rule on the cloth board. ~ A comprehensive book of professional bread-making. Martin Parr writes, "The Book of Bread is one of those rare books that can be judged by its cover, or rather, by its name... A monograph about the manufacture of bread, it is the bread-maker's bread book, illustrated with photographs, about which Simmons – evidently a man who did not hold with false modesty-writes: 'However critical readers might be, they will be forced to admit that never before have they seen such a complete collection of prize loaves illustrated in such an excellent manner.' The photographic reproductions – as opposed to the two original silver-gelatin prints pasted into the book – Simmons continues, were produced, with no expense spared, after various trials using different processes, especially for the colour illustrations: 'The loaves are now reproduced photographically correct, of exactly full size, and the colours are as nearly perfect as it is possible for them to be by any process at present known.' Simmons might be a little over confident about the reproduction, but as far as the aesthetic quality of the photographs go, his boasts are not misplaced. The late Sam Wagstaff, who amassed one of the finest photographic collections of the 20th century, once said that there was a photographer for everything-someone who was the best at photographing shoes, or clouds, or mountains. Simmons evidently found the best photographer of bread, though sadly, he failed to credit him. The 19th-century photobook was primarily an archive in which the things of the world were stored and catalogued. Here, at the beginning of the 20th century, one of the humblest, yet most essential of objects is catalogued as precisely, rigorously and objectively as any work by a 1980s Conceptual artists" (Parr & Badger I:56) ~ The description of illustrations refers to a bromide photograph; however, that photograph was only included in the edition deluxe, a very limited issue published the same year, and bound in full red-grained morocco. The tipped-in illustrations are in fine condition excepting a tiny chip or fold to two images. Some light age-toning to some leaves; offsetting mark to two facing pages from newspaper clipping laid-in. Publisher's green cloth, with a decorative border and spine title in black, and the title in gilt on the front panel. Binding with light soil, corners a little bumped, and with one abrasion to front panel. Still, very good or near fine. [Bitting, 435; Parr & Badger I:56; not in the Roth 101].

Description
1776. MALTON, Thomas. A Compleat Treatise on Perspective, in Theory and Practice; on the True Principles of Dr. Brook Taylor. [4], viii, [8], 284 pp. Illustrated with an engraved frontispiece and 46 numbered, mostly folding engravings, five with moveable parts. London: Printed for the author, and sold by Messrs. Robson, et al., 1776. BOUND WITH: An Appendix or second Part to the Compleat Treatise on Perspective. 160 pages : 10 plates, one with a moveable part. Folio. 367 x 232 mm, bound in period English polished calf, over original boards. London: Printed for the author, and sold by Messrs. Robson, et al., 1783. Rare First Edition of both parts. A fine copy of both parts of Malton's work on perspective, written as a guide for painters and artists. According to the entry by CCA, the first edition of the first part from 1776 is "one of the 300 copies delivered to subscribers before the rest were destroyed in the printer's fire of 2 Mar. 1776. 'An appendix, or second part' was published in 1783, delayed seven years because of the fire" (Canadian Center for Architecture, online catalogue). Malton's Compleat Treatise on Perspective, is one of the special genre of scientific books to possess illustrations with "cut-out" parts or folding moveable flaps. Five of the forty-six engravings have tipped-on diagrams meant to be folded into geometrical figures, much like John Dee's Euclid (1570) and/or Cowley's Theory of Perspective Demonstrated (1765-6). Thomas Malton (1748-1804) published two books on geometry and perspective before being appointed professor at the Royal Academy in 1775. As professor of art and perspective, his classes were attended by J.M.W. Turner and Thomas Girtin. Malton exhibited his views of London and other paintings at the Royal Academy and was awarded a prestigious prize by the Society of Arts. In 1792 he published the work by which he is now best known: A Picturesque Tour through the Cities of London and Westminster, illustrated with a hundred colour aquatint plates. Between 1798 and 1800 he produced Views from Cambridge, and was at work on a similar title on Views from Oxford at his death. The present work was widely used during the eighteenth century by British artists and painters as the basic text on perspective. Nearly all of Malton's illustrations demonstrate use of perspective as it pertains to artistic representation in painting, drawing, and engraving. Specifically, he offers techniques for portraying perspective in rendering interior spaces, as well as for furniture (bookcases, desks, chairs, organs), shadows from candle light, carriages with moving wheels, domes and ceilings, stairwells, opened windows and doors, buildings (Queen's Palace St James Park, the Royal Hospital, and St. Paul's Covent Garden), Doric arcades, Ionic capitals, vases, cubes, curvilinear objects, vanishing points of tiled floors, globes and spheres, etc. The plates were engraved by the author, Peter Mazell, Tobias Miller (i.e. Mueller), Anker Smith, and Joseph Colyer, all after Malton. Malton's text is divided into four books: Book One discusses light and colour, theory of vision, and chapters on reflection, transparency, and refraction; Book Two focuses on the Theory of Perspective; Book Three on the Practice of Perspective, and Book Four contains observations on light and shade, shadows, and reflected light on water, in mirrors, etc. In the Preface Malton refers to the contents of his Appendix, but according to the records of CCA (see above) this Appendix was not printed until 7 years later in 1783 due to a fire in the printer's establishment. Fine, complete copies of this work are exceedingly rare; most were heavily used by artists, and the moveable parts were worn and eventually removed. This copy is extremely fresh. PROVENANCE: Richard Dunne, Stamp on title page. Not in Millard, Fowler, Harris, Berlin Katalog. Listed only once in Weinreb Architectural catalogues: Catalogue 1, no. 101 (1961) (and that was the second edition of 1778!). Blau & Kaufmann, Architecture and Its Image 28.

New York: Alfred A. Knopf, 1964 First edition, first issue, with a six-line colophon; first state dust jacket. Publisher's red cloth, with the title in blind to the front board, gilt lettering to spine, and black topstain; in the original dust jacket designed by Schindelman, with illustration of a chocolate candy bar, Charlie, and Willy Wonka to the front panel, illustration of Wonka dancing in front of billboards to the rear panel. Very good book, with slight dimming to spine gilt, a touch of soiling to rear board, and ownership signature to front pastedown; very good price-clipped dust jacket, with light toning to spine, some shallow chipping to spine ends, a small chip to top edge of rear panel, some short closed tears to edges, and slightly nicked corners. Overall, an attractive and clean copy of this iconic Roald Dahl title. Charlie and the Chocolate Factory is a popular children's book, featuring the child protagonist Charlie Bucket, who, along with four others, is awarded the privilege of touring the famous Mr. Willy Wonka's chocolate factory. Joining Charlie on the fantastical tour are some of Dahl's most memorable characters, including the gluttonous Augustus Gloop, spoiled Veruca Salt, gum-chewing Violet Beauregarde, and television addict Mike Teavee. Charlie, a poor and kindhearted child, successfully passes Wonka's unspoken challenge by resisting an unscrupulous offer by a rival chocolatier, winning him a ride in Wonka's glass elevator. Like many of Dahl's child protagonists, Charlie represents purity and honesty in the face of malevolent adults. Charlie's story is continued in the sequel Charlie and the Great Glass Elevator (1972). Charlie and the Chocolate Factory has been adapted into two popular films: Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory (1971), a musical adaptation directed by Mel Stuart starring Gene Wilder, and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (2005), directed by Tim Burton and featuring Johnny Depp. A prequel to Charlie and the Chocolate Factory titled Wonka, starring Timothée Chalamet in the title role, was released at the end of 2023.. First Edition. Hard Cover. Very Good/Dust Jacket Included. Illus. by Schindelman, Joseph.

Textile traders set up stalls in the covered Byzantine structure, and the building was a hub for locals and visitors alike. Over time, the market grew to include vendors of jewelry, shoes, books, and a multitude of other goods, and continues to thrive as a historical landmark in the city of Istanbul, home to thousands of vendors. Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer. No binding. About Fine. Vintage original 8 x 10" (20 x 25 cm) black-and-white glossy gelatin silver print still photo, USA. Lillian Gish, Lars Hanson, Henry B. Walthall, Karl Dane, dir: Victor Sjöström; MGM. A few tiny creases at left edge blank white margin, about fine. The famous Nathaniel Hawthorne story of Hester Prynne, the seamstress punished for playing on the Sabbath. A young minister takes pity on her and they fall in love. Hester's husband has gone missing for several years, and though the couple's love is forbidden, they cannot help themselves. A baby is born and Hester is branded with a scarlet "A" for adulteress. The townspeople who condemn her are shocked when it is revealed who the father is. A brilliant silent film, perhaps the finest interpretation on film of this novel, with script by Frances Marion, costumes designed by Max Ree and set decoration by Cedric Gibbons and Sidney Ullman. Gish was perfectly cast as the demure yet sensual Hester, one of her finest performances. She campaigned heavily to have the film made and won the battle against the studio and American civic morality groups to have it approved. Many of the locations were filmed at the Iverson Ranch in Chatsworth, near Los Angeles. In this rare behind-the-scenes moment, we witness a tense exchange between Gish and director Victor Sjöström. The filming was intense when Gish learned that her mother had a stroke in London and she needed to leave. The schedule was rearranged and two weeks of filming were completed in three days. Photo coded 256-x-46.

Slightly worn; some soiling, especially to first and last leaves; minor loss to lower outer corner of first leaf. Jähns 122. The present manuscript, which appears to have been used for performance, may derive from the first edition of the overture published in Leipzig by Breitkopf & Härtel in an octavo format after 1840. First performed on 11 November 1811 and revised by the composer in 1822. The present overture, originally appearing at the start of the unfinished opera Rübezahl, was recast by Weber as "Der Beherrscher der Geister" in 1811. Weber was a German composer, conductor, pianist, and critic. "A prototypical 19th-century musician-critic, he sought through his works, words, and efforts as performer and conductor to promote art and shape emerging middle-class audiences to its appreciation. His contributions to song, choral music, and piano music were highly esteemed by his contemporaries, his opera overtures influenced the development of the concert overture and symphonic poem, and his explorations of novel timbres and orchestrations enriched the palette of musical sonorities. With the overwhelming success of his opera Der Freischütz in 1821 he became the leading exponent of German opera in the 1820s and an international celebrity. A seminal figure of the 19th century, he influenced composers as diverse as Marschner, Mendelssohn, Wagner, Meyerbeer, Berlioz, and Liszt." Michael C. Tusa in Grove Music Online.

Description
London: Hutchinson & Co. Ltd.. Near Fine in Near Fine dj. 1969. First Edition. Hardcover. [a very nice copy, just a touch of soiling to top and bottom edges of yellow cloth covers; the jacket is bright and fresh, with only a teensy bit of wear to the extremities, light scuffing to the rear panel]. (B&W photographs) "Here is all Teddy Beardom -- bears on the Matterhorn, bears on the stage, John Betjeman's bear, Donald Campbell's bear, a bear in an Evelyn Waugh novel, Christopher Robin's bear, bears and Theodore Roosevelt, bears as healers, bears with family trees, baronet bears, autobiographical bears, correspondent bears, bears with High Moral Principles, bears on the screen, Valentine bears, monster bears and midget bears, elegant bears and scruffy bears, ephemeral bears and long-life bears, bears in poetry, bears in prose, bears in the Royal Academy, Peter Bull's bear. This is a book about BEARS." British actor Peter Bull (1912-1984), when he wasn't mucking about with Teddy bears (which apparently took up quite a bit of his time and attention), had a long career as a supporting player in films and on the stage -- most memorably as the Russian Ambassador in DR. STRANGELOVE and the Captain of the Louisa in THE AFRICAN QUEEN. In the latter, he delivered with a perfect deadpan the following unbroken string of dialogue: "By the authority vested in me by Kaiser Wilhelm II, I prounounce you man and wife. Proceed with the execution." .
