Description
1896. LA FONTAINE, Jean de. Tales And Novels In Verse. London: Printed For The Society Of English Bibiliophilists, circa 1889. Two volumes. Royal octavo, early 20th-century three-quarter crimson morocco gilt, raised bands, marbled endpapers, top edges gilt. $2000.Limited illustrated edition, one of an unknown limitation, of La Fontaine’s ribald retellings of comic Italian tales, featuring 123 hand-colored engravings (85 by Charles Eisen). Handsomely bound by Root & Son.""A lover of nature, of keen intelligence, power of observation and poetic genius"" (Oxford Companion to French Literature, 386), Jean de La Fontaine, best known for his popular animal fables enjoyed by generations of children, penned stories in a decidedly different vein with his Contes et nouvelles en vers. ""The first [of the tales] was published in 1664, the last posthumously. He borrowed them mostly from Italian sources, in particular Giovanni Boccaccio… The essence of nearly all his Contes lies in their licentiousness… The accent of La Fontaine the narrator enlivens the story with playfully capricious comments, explanations and digressions"" (Encyclopedia Britannica). ""Eisen's 80 designs for La Fontaine [first published in 1762] are the liveliest and most adroit that he ever drew. Thoroughly at home with the varied action of these lusty stories—their love passages, their intrigues, their practical jokes—he is also expert in choosing the moment in each that will best serve his purpose as an illustrator"" (Ray, The Art of the French Illustrated Book 26). This edition of Tales and Novels is a later English verse translation. With 123 engravings, including 85 by Eisen. A similar edition, also printed for the Society of English Bibliophilists and featuring 123 uncolored engravings, saw print in 1896 in a limited edition of 520 copies; this edition is undated and the limitation is unspecified. Bookplate.Only occasional very faint foxing, text and plates generally clean. Minor rubbing to extremities of handsome morocco-gilt bindings. An excellent copy of this lovely illustrated work.

Description
Cincinnati, Ohio: The Fireside Game Co. The United States Playing Card Company, 1897. Card. (Stiff wraps). Very Good. Scarce card game trade catalogue, with only a single catalogue of this line found on OCLC First Search, and that particular catalogue is for a later year (1899) and somewhat smaller as well. (Held by the Ohio Historical Connection.) Oblong, 12 by 16.5 cm. Title page, price list and 18 chromolithograph plates. The card games being promoted in this catalogue all have a supposed educational benefit. The games are called "Strange People"; "Election"; "Wild Animals"; "Oak Leaves"; "The Pines"; "Maple Grove"; "Our Union"; "Populations Around the World"; "Flags of All Nations"; "In the White House"; "In Dixie-land"; "Artists". Some of the games are very much of their period, reflecting the mores and prejudices prevalent then. The most egregious example of this is, you guessed right, "In Dixie-Land", which carries the caption: Characteristic glimpses of southern negro life. Happy sketches of a happy people", and which, in the card shown as a specimen features two black boys eating watermelon. Other games, such as those relating to trees, concern the identification of various types of pines or maples, exercises that one can not imagine being a part of the curriculum, or even sub-curriculum, today. Overall the games are about the accumulation of facts, such as populations, or the names of castles. The United States Playing Card Company (USPCC), established in 1867 as Russell, Morgan & Co. and founded in its current incarnation in 1885, is a large producer and distributor of playing cards. Its many brands surviving to the present include Bicycle, Bee, Tally-Ho, Congress, Hoyle, Aviator, Aristocrat, KEM, and several others. It also produces novelty and custom cards, and other playing card accessories such as poker chips. Dating of the catalogue based on price list page which is dated 1897-1898. Condition: light wear.
