Description
London: W. and J. Innys, 1720. FIRST EDITION IN ENGLISH. Wooduct initials, head- and tailpieces, 1 folding plate. Contemporary paneled calf, rebacked; slight foxing on preliminary leaves, overall a fine copy. First English edition. Originally published in Latin in 1654, this was an important contribution to the subject of pulmonary tuberculosis. Bennet includes his observations on a number of his cases and dissections. “Its most valuable feature is the constant reference to causes observed and to dissection, not to authority which gives the little treatise an honorable place among the earlier examples of the modern method in medicine.” The plate illustrated instruments to use for what the author terms fumigation” or means of inhaling steam, to which he attaches great importance Bennet (1617-1655), a successful London physician, became himself a victim of tuberculosis and died at the age of 38. DNB, II, p. 229; Osler, 2010.

To which is added a sermon, on the goodness of God, manifested in governing the hearts of his enemies

London: The Readers Library Publishing Company. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Near Fine/Very Good/Near Fine. 12mo., 250(1)pp. Sharp First Edition, the "Copyright Edition" a novelization of the film of the same name released in 1927 by United Artists and starring Douglas Fairbanks and Lupe Velez. Illustrated with eight scenes from the film. Undated but c.1927-1928. There was also a Grosset and Dunlop Photoplay Edition released in the US at the same time. Though notoriously flimsily made, this is square, tight and clean throughout save some scattered spotting to the fore-edge. Mid wear to spine ends and tips. Equally attractive unclipped, though unpriced, dust-jacket, has a small chip to the heel and a tine chip to the rear fold. Mild edge-wear and some light scattered spotting. Still remarkably fresh and bright and quite scarce in such nice condition. A very pretty copy of an uncommon title, particularly on this side of the Atlantic,
