[36], 522, [2, blank] pp. With scarce engraved frontispiece portrait by Dolle, often not present. Decorated woodcut initials and headpieces. Title page printed in red and black. Contemporary mottled calf, neatly rebacked, retaining original red morocco lettering label. Board edges tooled in gilt. Marbled edges. With two previous owner's bookplates on front pastedown, including an eighteenth-century armorial bookplate of Sir George Cooke of Westminster. Pages with some occasional foxing and toning. A few tiny burn holes, only slightly affecting text on leaf F4. Otherwise a very good copy of this controversial work. Nostradamus's famous prophecies were first published in Lyons in 1555. Nostradamus (Michel de Notredame) was for years a wandering physician, until 1547 when he married a wealthy widow. His major energies, though, were directed towards the pursuit of knowledge from the ancient Hebrew prophets, to whose religion his ancestors had adhered until his grandfather converted to Catholicism. In 1555 he claimed divine inspiration for his astrological forecasts and his first book of prophecies was printed in Lyon. This work garnered him instant success and by the end of the year he was summoned to the French court to cast the horoscopes of the royal children. He feels that the importance in making these observations is necessitated by efforts to date the books and events of the Bible as well as to discuss in depth the many factual and quasi-factual biblical depictions of people, nations and events. Starting with his own thoughts on creation, Maunder skips across the centuries to treat positions of the sun, stars, constellations and planets throughout the Bible in conjunction with the recitation of events. Of particular interest is the discussion of three astronomical “marvels,” Joshua’s long day, the Dial of Ahaz and the Star of Bethlehem.

914 pp. volume comprising a posthumous publication of sermons by Reverend Samuel Willard, an early American-born Boston minister who served as the pastor of the Old South Church and Vice President of Harvard College, some pages misnumbered, complete as issued. Small folio. Contemporary leather with raised spine, abrasions, soiling, edgewear, some splitting along spine, some slight toning and foxing scattered throughout. Lacking engraved frontispiece portrait. Boston (Green and Kneeland for Eliot and Henchman) 1726. The preface to the work praises Willard as "universally and justly admir'd and celebrated in these Parts of the World, for his eminent Capacity Piety Wisdom, his deep and perspicuous Insight into the most difficult Points of Divinity, and his most judicious and accurate manner of expressing and clearing, as well as most useful application of them." They go on to say that the work was strongly desired and wished for ever since Willard's death, and describe the volume as "the first folio volume, other than laws, and the largest work up to this time printed in the United States....Besides a catalogue of the Author's works published in his lifetime, it contains a list of names of about five hundred subscribers. When the time, and the subject, extent, and size of the work is considered, this list is a remarkable tribute to the memory of the distinguished Author from his contemporaries; and has large genealogical value as representative of the helpful, public-spirited citizenship of the period.

Emilio Villa's "Flippant Ball-Feel" text was composed and published on the occasion of the "Flippers Chimeri" by Corrado Costa and William Xerra, exhibited in the contemporary gallery of the Mana Market Hall in Rome. Villa (1914-2003) was a poet, visual artist, art critic, and translator. A forerunner of the neo-avant-garde and a precursor to Gruppo 63, he spent time in Brazil in the 1950s and became involved with the Brazilian concrete poetry group before returning to Rome. A student of languages, Villa often wrote in a dialect of Milan rather than what he saw as the problematic and academic "Ytaglya" of the post-war period. He also often inserted words and phrases in ancient Greek, Provençal, French, and other languages into his poems, complicating his texts. His goal at times is to deliberately disorient and confuse his reader. As of January 2023, OCLC locates only three copies of this small work in Italian libraries and none elsewhere.

1950. [African American] Archive of 63 vernacular photos of African American women c. 1950s-90s. Images are in color and black and white with measurements ranging from 5" x 7" to 2" x 2" in. One color photo shows 4 generations of Black women posed on stairs outside a large concrete building with sign behind them reading, "Philadelphia Civic Cent[er]...Temple University Commencement Thursday May 27 1030." Two older women in suits pose with a little girl in pale blue bellbottoms and matching top, ankles crossed casually as she leans against one of the older woman who stands straight, a handbag over one arm. Two images included show the same woman, one a closeup of her face behind tinted seventies glasses, gazing downward with fingers just visible pressed against her chest. In the second photo she stands, one hand grasping a bag over her shoulder, gazing into the camera with the same expression of calm strength. The archive shows African American women across generations and decades, well dressed in church pews, around banquet tables, at home in grandmotherly housedresses, posing alone or in groups raising glasses together in celebration. One image shows a woman sitting on a riding mower, sunglasses and hat on, smiling broadly with one hand raised. Throughout American history black women have fought for freedom and justice not only for themselves but for society at large. Positioned at the intersection of racism and sexism, Black women have been largely underrepresented, overworked and discredited for their social contributions. To show them represented in their joy, not just their struggle, is integral work in reclaiming their rightful historic role. The University of Virginia's Albert and Shirley Small Special Collections Library describes "Black joy" as "a phrase used by historians to highlight the positive aspects of Black history separate from its suffering. Representations of African Americans living lives at once ordinary and inspired, both deeply personal and universal, is an integral piece of any American history archive.

A lavishly produced corporate volume chronicling Aramco's global image at the dawn of the 1980s, Aramco and Its World represents a full-color evolution of the mid-century Aramco Handbook series. As the preface explains, the work originated in the company's postwar need to orient thousands of new American employees to "a strange land among a people whose language they did not understand and whose culture sometimes seemed almost incomprehensible." This 1980 edition-revised, expanded, and retitled-retains its dual mission as both corporate history and cultural primer, designed for "employees, and... anyone with an interest in these things and a desire to learn something about some or all of them." Visually, the book is striking. A section on "Arabic Writing" reproduces multiple historical scripts, from angular Kufic inscriptions to the flowing Ottoman tughra, alongside zoomorphic calligraphy shaped into birds and elaborate monograms. The caption notes that "calligraphy has been called 'the geometry of the spirit'-a discipline of aesthetic order and decoration but immensely useful as well." Panoramic landscape photography captures the Kingdom's physical extremes: the craggy escarpments of the Hijaz lit by angled sun, wind-swept dunes with rippling sand shadows, the Red Sea's coral-fringed shallows, and the jagged monoliths of the Jebel Tuwaiq. A foldout-style topographic map charts "The Growth of the Modern Saudi State," with color-coded overlays mapping Ibn Saud's territorial gains between 1902 and 1932. Industrial content is equally prominent. Aerial photographs depict offshore jack-up rigs and sprawling desert drill sites, paired with close-ups of roughnecks in hardhats and drill bits in motion. A "Gas Operations" spread presents a schematic of Saudi Arabia's gas infrastructure, with multicolored lines tracing ethane, propane, butane, and natural gasoline flows from separation plants to Yanbu, Ju'aymah, Ras Tanura, and Jubail. Additional chapters detail refining, shipping, and petrochemicals, positioning Aramco as both a technological leader and a steward of national development. The narrative omits the fact that by 1980, Saudi Arabia had acquired full ownership of Aramco-transforming the American consortium into a contractor-yet the tone remains consistent with earlier decades, framing the company's role as a bridge between cultures and as a driver of modernization in the Arabian Peninsula. Fine condition, with minimal handling wear; slipcase equally well preserved.

One photograph depicts the grand broadcasting headquarters, across from Deseret News, with prominent signage which towers over the valley. Other photos reveal the vintage equipment of the times, the broadcasters themselves, and the types of activities that would take place within the station. Another shows a poster for Edward Murrow's show. (a prominent award is named after Edward R. Murrow, a critic of McCarthyism). Periodic gluestaining to the reverse of the photographs. A collection of photographs which reflect the serious professionalism and collegiality present in the KSL studios.

[nice clean tight book, with only minimal shelfwear; jacket shows some traces of wear along spine edges, but still bright and attractive overall]. This "powerful novel of a beautiful woman in politics" tells the story of a woman who accepts the offer of a nomination to Congress from the Democratic Party boss in her Manhattan district. An idealist who worshipped FDR, she believes this is her chance "to ride a white horse toward a better world." The first obstacle to her fiery ambition is actually that party boss himself (who in the book's first exchange of dialogue addresses her as "cookie"!), and she soon runs smack up against "the complexities and compromise of political life," including the corruption within the party itself. One of her primary antagonists, interestingly, is another woman, a brilliant and powerful publicity director, and she also has to put up with some shit from her own husband. By the way, this isn't one of those "large unnamed city" kinds of books: it's set in New York, and is geographically very specific: our heroine lives on West 103rd St., her publicity-woman adversary has an apartment on Orange Street in Brooklyn Heights, and hotels, restaurants and other locales are called out by name. The author's jacket blurb explains that she herself had been a candidate for the state legislature "some years ago," which provided her with a great deal of background knowledge for this novel, her first and only. .
