Description
WARREN COURT (1953-1969). The Warren Court was the period in the Supreme Court when Earl Warren served as Chief Justice, widely considered the most liberal Supreme Court in American history. This court expanded civil rights, civil liberties, judicial power, and federal power, through creations like one man, one vote and the Miranda warning, brought an end to de jure racial segregation, and ended officially sanctioned voluntary prayer in public schools. PS. c. 1965-1967. Washington, D. C. A color photograph of the Warren Court signed by the nine justices Earl Warren, Hugo L Black, W Douglas, Tom C Clark, John Harlan, W J Brennan Jr, Potter Stewart, Byron R white, and Abe Fortas along the bottom margin of the photo. This photo pictures the nine judges of the Warren Court between 1965 and 1967. They are standing in a tall room in the Supreme Court building. Fortas was nominated for Supreme Court in 1965, and Clark retired in 1967. Two rulings this court made were the Griswold v. Connecticut case (1965), affirming that rights of privacy are constitutionally protected, and Miranda v. Arizona (1966), requiring certain rights to be read to a person in police custody, creating the Miranda Warning. The photograph is in very good condition and professionally framed.

Description
Boston: New-England: Richard Draper, 1769. 55, [1 blank] pp, with the half title as issued. Stitched, scattered light spotting. Very Good. This election sermon is an important illustration of the growing colonial resentment of Parliamentary abuses of power. Haven, pastor of the First Church in Dedham, subscribes to the 'natural rights' and 'social compact' theory of government. "By forming into civil society, men do indeed give up some of their natural rights; but it is in prospect of a rich compensation, in the better security of the rest, and in the enjoyment of several additional ones, that flow from the constitution of government." Despite the different types of government, "the natural rights of the people...are the same under every form of government." He quotes "the great Mr. Locke" on the duty of the people to oppose tyranny, and asserts that the colonists are justifiably apprehensive about Parliament's excessive assertions of authority, most recently expressed in the Townshend Acts. FIRST EDITION. Evans 11289. ESTC W3227.

Description
San Francisco: Arion Press, 1995. Hardcover. Fine. Hardcover. Number 264 of 326 copies of which three hundred numbered copies signed by the author in pencil. Henry Roth (1905-1995) wrote this momentous novel in 1934. It was a first novel, completed at the age of twenty-seven. Reviews were mixed and the novel slipped quietly into obscurity. After marrying in 1939, Roth moved to Maine where he worked as a woodsman, a schoolteacher, a psychiatric attendant in the state mental hospital, a waterfowl farmer, and a Latin and math tutor. Little changed until 1964 when the book was issued in paperback. Overnight it shot to the top of the bestseller lists and was reviewed on the front page of the New York Times Book Review. It was praised by Alfred Kazin as "the most profound novel of Jewish life by an American." Bound in gray-green cloth with a dark green goatskin spine with titling in gilt to spine. Letterpress printed in Bulmer type on Zerkall paper. There are 48 black and white photographs that were printed in duotone offset lithography. The photographs were taken in New York City at the approximate period in which the novel is set, 1907-1913. Housed in a slipcase printed in green, with images of brickwork, windows, and the door of a tenement building, emblematic of the windows the protagonist, David Schearl, looks in and out of. The box has two faint brown marks on the top. Accompanied by the prospectus. Other than the marks on the box, this is in about fine condition. Measures 7 x 10.25 inches. 434 numbered pages plus 48 unnumbered pages for the photographs. PRI/100124.

Description
Connecticut, 1850. Unbound. Very good. This three-page stampless folded letter written on an illustrated Yale College letter sheet measures 15"x9.75" unfolded. The letter, datelined "Northford June 22d, 1850," was written over several days by C.B. Brooks and sent to a friend, "Hon. Smith." In nice shape. The letter sheet features a 5" x 3" oval image of the early Yale campus, known as "Old Brick Row." The image is titled "Yale College / 1845." The letter is filled with friendly and somewhat cryptic conversation. It reads in part: "A Sabbath passed pleasantly away as far as the preaching could make it, but the singing had ben intolerably good. . .. As I took a peep out of the window just now I saw Chappy drive up at Mr. Hoadly's and nor long after this, I saw both he and his dear step into the carriage, which, with the aid of the horse conveyed them down the meeting-house hill rather sudden thought I. Where they are going as for what purposes they are going I know not, but if conjecture is anything, they are going to N. Haven, it would tell me to make some preparatory steps toward - you now what as well as I. . .." . A very nice early view of Yale. .

Description
[New Braunfels, TX]: n.p., 1974. Very good.. A small archive of color photo prints of a group of friends attending the 1974 WURSTFEST in New Braunfels, Texas, an annual German heritage festival, held since 1963 and boasting a current attendance of over 100,000 people. The 1974 fest drew an estimated 75,000. Images capture a quintessential mid-1970's Texas style in an innocent and engaging vernacular style. The period color and often blurred shots of debauchery, dancing, drinking, etc. compose an artful snapshot collection strikingly reminiscent of the era mined by Richard Linklater in his 1993, Austin-set film, DAZED AND CONFUSED. Dude. 69 approximately 4.25" x 3.5" color snapshot photographs loose, plus a color brochure and printed menu from the fest. Faint odor of must to contents. Otherwise clean, sharp, well preserved. Very good overall.

London: The Readers Library Publishing Company. Hardcover. Fine/Fine. 12mo., 376pp. Sharp First Edition, the "Copyright Edition", a novelization of the film of the same name released in 1929 in the UK starring Norma Kerry, Francis Cuyler, and Donald Macardle and eight pages of stills from the film . Undated but almsot certainly 1929 to coincide with the release of the film. Though notoriously flimsily made, this is square, tight and clean throughout save some quite mildly toned page edges. A hint of edge-wear but remarkably well-preserved. Equally attractive unclipped, though unpriced, dust-jacket, features a gorgeous wrap-around full-color illustration. Perhaps a hint of wear to spine ends and tips but quite fresh and bright with no chipping, creases or tears. Quite scarce in such nice condition. Laid in is a news article about the author affixed to note paper. Also affixed is a clipped hand-written inscription by the author, "With kind regards, Hall Caine". A very pretty copy of an uncommon title, and very tough to find in such high-grade condition, particularly on this side of the Atlantic. The clipped signature is an added bonus.
