Description
Oxford and London: University Press, Oxford. Henry Frowde, London. Silver (With 800 mark, meaning 80 percent pure). Fine. The silver spine is truly an object of beauty. Intricate silver chasing and relief work, with Christ on cross at center of front board, Christ's ascension, the center of the rear, angelic figures in the four corners front and rear, and elaborate Rococo style decoration framing the figures and leaving no space empty. The spine is somewhat simpler with a sculpting of the Madonna with the infant Jesus, but a sort of lattice work reinforces the verticality of the spine. Also the silver clasp has a seraph's head projecting outward. 32mo. 11.5 by 7.5 cm. Over half unpaginated on thin -- very thin -- paper. Approximately 900 pages. Latter part paginated 1 to 423. The book has an inked inscription on a prelim blank dated 1899. The book has typical wear, and there is some rippling to the very thin paper. But this item is not really about the book, which is easy enough to find and nothing special, but rather the extraordinariness of the binding, and that is in Fine condition. It isn't even in need of polishing at this time!
