Description
1694. First Edition. PETRONIUS ARBITER, Titus. Traduction Entière de Petrone, Suivant le Nouveau Manuscrit Trouvé à Bellegrade en 1688. Cologne: Pierre Groth, 1694. Two volumes. Octavo, contemporary full crimson morocco, elaborately gilt-decorated spines, raised bands, covers with arms of the Comtesse de Verrue stamped in gilt as centerpieces, marbled endpapers, all edges gilt. $6200.First edition in French (with the original Latin on facing pages) of Petronius' Satyricon, illustrated with 9 copper-engraved plates, bound in contemporary French morocco-gilt, from the library of Jeanne Baptiste d'Albert de Luynes, the Comtesse de Verrue (1670-1736)—one of the greatest bibliophiles of her time—with her family coat-of-arms as gilt centerpieces on all four covers. Also from the renowned De Bure and Hoe collections, with Jean Jacques de Bure's ownership signature and Robert Hoe's morocco bookplate. The Satyricon was composed in Latin in the first century A.D. Classical scholars often describe it as a ""Roman novel,"" without necessarily implying continuity with the modern novel. (It is one of the two most extensive examples of the Roman novel, the other being the fully extant Metamorphoses of Apuleius.) The Satyricon has also served as a reliable source for the reconstruction of lower-class life during the early Roman Empire; Petronius' characters, most of them laypeople, talk about the theatre of ancient Rome, the amphitheater, and the circus. ""The adventures of a certain Encolpius and his companions in the south of Italy, chiefly in Puteoli or its environs, are made a vehicle for exposing the false taste and vices of the age. Unfortunately the vices of the personages introduced are depicted with such fidelity that we are perpetually disgusted by the obscenity of the descriptions"" (Peck, 1220).While the text is interrupted by frequent gaps, 141 sections of consecutive narrative have been preserved. It is speculated that the original composition was approximately 1000 pages. The ""fragments"" filling in the lacunae that were reportedly found at Belgrade and printed in the present edition are actually a forgery by François Nodot (1650-1710). Though the forgery was soon suspected, texts and translation of the Satyricon continued to incorporate Nodot's supplements until the early 20th century. Text in Latin and French on facing pages. Brunet IV, 576. Hoe Catalogue (1912), Part II, lot 2670 (this item). These volumes were from the library of Jeanne Baptiste d'Albert de Luynes, Comtesse de Verrue (1670-1736), French noblewoman and one of the greatest bibliophiles of her time. At the time of her death, she possessed around 18,000 volumes, kept in Paris and her house at Meudon. A great letter writer, Jeanne Baptiste was interested in art, science, literature and philosophy, kept in contact with the budding Voltaire and other philosophers, and maintained her own salon in Paris. Her vast private library was dispersed in 1737: these volumes are listed as part of lot 99 in the printed catalogue.Morocco-gilt bookplate of renowned bibliophile Robert Hoe, a co-founder and the first president of the prestigious Grolier Club. Mr. Hoe was ""one of the best-known and most ardent of book collectors, and owner, during his lifetime, of one the most famous private library in this country… in his passing [in 1909] America lost one of her greatest bibliophiles"" (Transactions of the Grolier Club IV:12). The 1912 catalogue for Hoe's library lists these volumes as lot 2670, describing them as ""with the arms of the Comtesse de Verrue."" Ownership signature and annotation of Jean Jacques de Bure: the de Bure family were book collectors, booksellers, auctioneers, and all around bibliophiles for some 200 years; when Jean Jacques de Bure died in 1853, the library that many generations of the family had assembled was dispersed at auction. Engraved armorial bookplate of Jean-Baptiste de l'Ecuy, Abbot of Prémontré (1740-1834), the last abbot general of the Prémontré order before the Revolution.Light rubbing to joints, shallow wear to spine head of Volume I. Morocco clean and fine, gilt bright. A superb copy splendidly bound for royalty with impeccable provenance.

Description
London: Printed for T. Cadell and W. Davies, 1806. First edition. Quarto (10 1/2 x 8 3/8 inches; 266 x 212 mm). xviii, [2], 447, [1, blank] pp. With twenty-one hand-colored aquatint plates and maps, two of which are double page and one which is folding. Contemporary speckled calf, rebacked preserving original spine. Boards tooled in gilt. Spine with two morocco spine labels, lettered and stamped in gilt. Board edges stamped in gilt. Edges speckled red and green. Marbled endpapers. Previous owner's bookplate on front pastedown. Some toning from plates. Small hole to leaf G2, barely touching a letter. Small tear to bottom margin of leaf P2, not affecting text. Overall a very good copy. "This is the first illustrated English work on what was then called Cochin China, now southern Vietnam. The work is described as being 'Illustrated and embellished with several engravings by Medland, coloured after the original drawings by Mr. Alexander and Mr. Daniell.' In the Paris edition of 1807, the plates were published in a separate atlas folio. The voyage visited Madeira, the Canary Islands, and Rio de Janeiro; a description of that city and of Brazil in general is given. Touching at Tristan da Cunha, the ship rounded the Cape and eventually reached Cochin China via the city of Batavia on Java. The volume is also of Cook interest, as it describes finding Captain Cook's Resolution transformed into a smuggling whaler under the French flag. This book is the account of Barrow's voyage on the way to China as a member of Lord Macartney's embassy and is dedicated to his traveling companion, Sir George Staunton. The detailed information on Cochin China is taken from a manuscript memoir drawn up by Captain Barissy, a French naval officer, who had the means and opportunity of collecting accurate information. A supplementary article, 'An account of a journey to Leetakoo, the residence of the chief of the Booshuana nation' (p. [361}-437), covers an overland expedition from Cape Town to the interior of South Africa into the then little-known territory of Bechuanaland. It is taken from a manuscript journal originally writ- ten in Dutch by Pieter Jan Truter, one of the Commissioners of that expedition, which had been ordered by the Cape government. The supplement is accompanied by a fine map of the country and four handsome aquatints from drawings by Samuel Daniell. Barrow continued in the service of Lord Macartney after the latter became governor of Cape Colony, from 1796 to 1798." (Hill, 66). "As a writer Barrow is best known for his Mutiny on the Bounty (1831) but, during his lifetime, his accounts of his travels in eastern Asia and southern Africa, published between 1801 and 1807, were better known and more influential. These established new standards for travel writing. In all, he wrote or edited seventeen full length books... His interests ranged widely, but the great bulk of his output had a geographical focus, usually with an underlying imperial theme and a belief in progress and the superiority of British civilization. He wrote extensively about Asia, the Americas, Australia and the Pacific, the eastern Mediterranean, and Africa." (Oxford DNB). Abbey, Travel 514. Hill 66 HBS 68671. $4,500.

Description
N. Y.: Tibor De Nagy Gallery, 1951. First edition of O'Hara's first book, the birth of the New York School of Poetry. One of 130 copies printed on French Arches paper out of a total edition of 150 copies (there were 20 copies on Japanese Kochi); this copy number 38. According to the colophon, A City Winter was published in March-April 1952 in an edition of 150 numbered copies, in two forms: a regular issue of 130 copies printed on French Arches paper [copies 21-150] and a deluxe issue printed on Japanese Kochi paper with an original drawing by Larry Rivers [copies 1-20]. However, according to Brad Gooch, 280 "folded paper" copies were printed in addition to the copies on Kochi paper. The regular issue, bound in blue paper wrappers, sold for $1.00; the deluxe hardbound issue on Kochi paper with an original drawing by Rivers for $20.00. Brad Gooch, City Poet: The Life and Times of Frank O'Hara (N. Y.: Alfred A. Knopf, 1993), p. 213. Not all of the copies in the regular issue were bound, a fact probably explained by the large over-run of 130 copies of the regular issue - twice the number specified in the colophon. These additional copies, for which there may not have been enough of the decorative blue paper used for the original wrappers, appear to have been distributed as unnumbered "folded paper" copies, that is, as "folded and gathered sheets". Of the copies that have come on the market in the past twenty-five years, the majority of copies have been in the form of unbound sheets. In the present copy, the cover label has come detached, and is laid into this copy; there is light marginal wear and tear to the fragile blue wrappers; otherwise a very good copy. Although all copies of A City Winter are rare, the regular issue in its original blue wrappers is far and away the rarest, as compared to the same in unbound sheets              . 8vo, original decorated wrappers with printed paper label on front cover.

[New York: Printed by William Bradford, 1723. [4] pp, folio. Caption title, as issued. Loose and lightly toned, else Very Good. Housed in a modern cloth binder, with gilt-lettered spine title. This rare item is the first statute establishing New York chancery fees, thus curing "the Inconveniences that may thereby ensue" from their absence. No Chancery Officer "shall exact, demand or ask any greater or other Fee or Fees" than the amounts enumerated herein. These regulations limit the "Governour's Fees, as Keeper of the Great Seal of this Province," as well as fees of Masters, Registers, Clerks, Examiners, Solicitors, and other officers. This is an early effort to curb the exercise of arbitrary power by hungry court officers. Governor Burnet signs in type at the end. Evans 2468. ESTC W34081.

Description
Washington D.C.: The National Geographic Society, 1967 Illustrated with 166 color photos by Baron Hugo van Lawick, and 41 paintings and drawings by Jay Matternes. First edition, first printing. Publisher's green cloth, with front board lettered in black, National Geographic Society emblem stamped in gilt to front board, spine lettered in gilt, and brick-red endpapers; in its original white dust jacket, with a photo of Goodall and two chimps to front panel, lettered in black. Fine book; very good dust jacket, with a touch of wear to head of spine, some wear along front flap fold with a small closed tear to bottom corner, clean and bright front panel, and significant soiling to rear panel. Overall, a pleasing copy. In this book, Jane Goodall recounts her early years of studying chimpanzees in the remote Gombe Stream Game Reserve in Tanzania, conveying all of the excitement, humor, and drama of her studies. As the dust jacket states, "The reader will delight in baby Flint's first steps, in sister Fifi's games, and in old Flo's motherly concern. He will share the author's thrill at establishing a bond of friendship with David Greybeard - and her terror when the powerful ape turned on her and Baron van Lawick and pursued them up a mountainside." Jane Goodall (1934 - 2025) was a primatologist, conservationist, and environmental activist, best known for her 65-year study of chimpanzees in what is now the Gombe Stream National Park. After making a breakthrough discovery about chimpanzees early in her career - specifically that they are not herbivores, as it was believed, but omnivores who eat red meat and use a "fishing tool" to lure bugs - she went on to obtain her PhD in 1965 and continued studying chimpanzees. She eventually shifted her energy to activism, establishing the Jane Goodall Institute (1977) and the Roots & Shoots youth organization (1991), and traveling widely to speak about crises facing chimpanzees and the planet at large. In her inspiring career she has received many of the highest honors possible, including the Presidential Medal of Freedom (2025), and was appointed UN Messenger of Peace (2002) and Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire (2003).. First Edition. Hard Cover. Fine/Dust Jacket Included.

Description
Manila, 1900. Very good.. Typed letter signed, [1]p. Typed on thin paper. Folded. A true copy of a typed letter by Gen. J.F. Bell that recommends Sgt. Maj. George J. Oden of the 36th Volunteer Infantry for a Certificate of Merit for gallantry during an engagement with Insurgents (native Filipinos who rebelled against American rule after Spain ceded the islands to the United States) in the mountains near Mangaterem on November 28, 1899, during the Spanish-American War. According to the text of the letter, "When the attack was finally made he tore down the mountain side at the head of a half dozen men into the midst of a large number of Insurgents, shooting right and left, and displaying great fearlessness and gallantry. He was foremost of all, and seemingly tireless, flew down the rough trail, finally winding up at the bottom, chasing all he could see alone. His enthusiasm and unconscious fearlessness was something pleasant to see." Certified as a true copy of the letter by a Buffalo Soldier, a First Lieutenant in the 10th U.S. Cavalry.
