Description
[Venice: Aldus Manutius, 1495. First Aldine edition, and the first complete edition of Theocritus (printing 12 of the 30 Idylls here for the first time); the first edition of HESIOD'S THEOGONY; second edition of his WORKS AND DAYS; and first editions of most of the other minor works (enumerated below); and first setting of quires £I °E F and £K °E G.. Title in Greek and Roman, introduction by Aldus in Latin;, text entirely in Greek. Woodcut decorated initials and floral or strapwork headpieces, ILLUMINATED THROUGHOUT IN COLORS AND GOLD IN A CONTEMPORARY HAND. [140] leaves. 1 vols. Folio, (315 x 210 mm.). Bound in early 18th-century mottled calf, spine in 7 compartments with citron morocco lettering piece in one and ornamental tooling in the rest; title soiled and shaved along fore-edge, extensive neatly penned marginalia in Greek and Latin, in two different hands; gilt edges, gauffered to all-over pattern of intersecting diagonal fillets and fleurons. Bookplate of St. Benedict's Abbey, Fort Augustus, Scotland. First Aldine edition, and the first complete edition of Theocritus (printing 12 of the 30 Idylls here for the first time); the first edition of HESIOD'S THEOGONY; second edition of his WORKS AND DAYS; and first editions of most of the other minor works (enumerated below); and first setting of quires £I °E F and £K °E G. First Aldine and first complete edition of the Idylls of Theocritus, of which 12 appear here for the first time, also including the first edition in the original Greek of Hesiod's Theogony and Shield of Hercules and the elegies of Theognis, as well as the second edition of Hesiod's Works and Days, which were first printed in Milan circa 1480. This is the first setting of gatherings [zeta].F and [theta].G, with the text uncorrected. Not only is this copy beautifully colored in a contemporary hand (none such appear in ABPC for the last 35 years, and we are unable to find any institutional copies with coloring), but the copy is notable as well for profuse, neat contemporary marginalia, mostly in Latin, but often in Greek, which fill the book. The marginal annotations are particularly extensive in the first two Idylls, where, typically, underscored words are explained in the margins; occasionally, an interlinear Latin word is provided beneath the Greek in an even smaller, but always clear, hand. The notes themselves are mostly philological in scope, with notations on unusual Doric (Theocritus's dialect) forms (e.g., the Doric form for the preposition 'πpòs' being 'πotì', the identification of parts of speech, and grammatical forms, poetic usage, etc.) Especially notable, too, are frequent comparisons and cross references to passages from Vergil's Eclogues. In the famous Idyll 2 ("Pharmaceutria"), where a spurned maiden utters incantations to bring her man back home, there now seem to be two distinct hands, and the notes are particularly frequent and copious. The first note reads: "Unde sumpta est Verg. Pharmaceutria" [whence Vergil got his Pharmaceutria]. A beautiful copy of a rare and important book, with fascinating early annotations. Description
1871. First Edition. HILDEBRANDT, Eduard. Aquarelle. Auf seiner Reise um die Erde. [Watercolors. From his Trip around the World]. Berlin: R. Wagner, 1871-74. Very large folio (17-3/4 by 21-5/8 inches), title leaf on heavy cardstock and 34 fine plates on textured paper mounted on cardstock; housed in the publisher's deluxe green leather-backed green cloth gilt portfolio box, large sepia portrait of Hildebrandt set in front board oval under glass, original brass clasps. $15,000.First edition of this collection of 34 stunning color aquarelle plates finished by hand of scenes from the world tour of artist Eduard Hildebrandt, official Painter to the Royal Court of Prussian King Friedrich Wilhelm IV, featuring scenes from Alexandria, Benares, Bombay, Cairo, Bangkok, Rangoon, Hong Kong, Macao, Peking, Singapore, Manila, Japan, and two famous views of San Francisco. In the publisher's magnificent deluxe portfolio box, with a large sepia portrait of Hildebrandt mounted under glass on the front board.Born in Danzig, Eduard Hildebrandt studied with the marine artist Wilhelm Krause and with French painter Eugene Isabey in Paris, winning three medals at the Paris salon in 1843. On his return to Berlin, his talent as a landscape painter attracted the attention of Alexander von Humboldt, who recommended him to the Prussian King, Friedrich Wilhelm IV. As a result he was made Painter to the Royal Court, and was supported on his subsequent extensive (and expensive) travels. In 1844-45 he visited America and Brazil; in 1847 he was in England, Portugal, Spain, and the Canaries and Madeira; in 1851 in Italy, Egypt, Palestine, Turkey and Greece; and from 1862-64 he was on his ""Reise um die Erde""—his Journey Around the World—from Trieste through Suez to India, and on to China, Japan, the Pacific and back via California and Central America. His dispatches from the trip were published by the Berlin Montagspost, and subsequently in book form. The original watercolors from the voyage were exhibited in London in 1866 and at an exhibition at the Crystal Palace in 1868, a year before his death in Berlin. Images in this set include scenes from Alexandria, Benares, Bombay, Cairo, Bangkok, Rangoon, Hong Kong, Macao, Peking, Singapore, Manila, Japan, and two famous views of San Francisco. The large folio plates were produced by R. Steinbock and W. Loeillot after the original watercolors by Hildebrandt using the Aquarelle process, with each color added manually by applying watercolors through stencils, each color requiring a different stencil. With a duplicate plate of plate #12, ""Strasse in St. Francisco."" Plates lovely and fine, minor restoration to publisher's deluxe box. A stunning production, rarely found complete, in the extremely rare publisher's deluxe box.

Description
New York: Holt, Rinehart and Winston, 1965. First Edition. Near Fine/Very Good+. First edition, first printing. 189, [2] pp. Bound in publisher's black paper-covered boards lettered in white and red. Near Fine with several faint circular indentations to covers. In a Very Good+ dust jacket with sunning to spine panel, light soiling and edgewear, faint scattered foxing, and impressions to front panel matching those on front board. A novel of New York street gangs in the 1960s that inspired Walter Hill's 1979 film by the same name, a cult classic that in turn inspired a series of video games and comic books. Actor David Kelly delivered the film's iconic line, "Warriors, come out to play," in a menacing singsongy style, which, once you've heard it, is difficult to forget.

Description
Bavaria, Germany: J. W. S. & S. [J. W. Spear and Sons], 1890. Very good.. Uncanny magical illustrated clown game with a pinball-like twist - in which the top lid opens to reveal a fun game of chance for children. Housed inside the box are brightly colored hinged chromolithographed clown figures. On the top lid is a clown with a wide grin which is used as an entrance point for the marbles. The goal is to try to get the ball into the holes at the bottom - but it has to go through the various platforms and moveable figures before landing at the bottom of the course. The marble eventually lands in a hole at the base, with each hole assigned a value - similar to pinball. With various points to collect ranging from 5 - 100, instructions in English on the bottom board. It's uncommon to find copies of games produced from J. W. Spear & Sons from the German factories, before their London opening which had a wider reach with English speaking consumers. Although this copy is in English, it still has the Bavaria, Germany copyright. A quirky turn-of-the-century piece. 11.5" x 7.75" Original hinged red paper box with pictorial paste-on to lid. Pictorial movable figure. 7 marbles of various colors (original number unknown). Some scuffing and splitting to box joints. Minor soiling throughout, overall bright.

New York: The Heritage Press, 1951. Heritage Press reprint. Hardcover. Very good. SIGNED by illustrator. 437pp. Small quarto [25.5 cm] Beige cloth over boards The title on the backstrip is a bit rubbed and the backstrip is moderately darkened. In the publisher's brown paper covered slipcase, with wear to the extremities, including several splits along the edges. The longest split measures 7 inches. A novel whose popularity helped to enshrine the American cowboy as an icon of American popular culture and a folk hero. This handsome Heritage Press edition is illustrated by William Moyers. Moyers was skilled at working with a variety of media from watercolor to bronze, winning gold and silver Cowboy Artists of America medals for painting and sculpting. Characteristically, his work blended the historic with the contemporary West (Cowboy Artists of America). This copy is inscribed by the illustrator, with a sketch, to Ernie Bulow, bookman, publisher, and friend of the American author and environmentalist Edward Abbey, on the half title. After receiving an English degree in the sixties, Bulow worked for the Bureau of Indian Affairs, resided in Gallup, N.M., and taught English at Fort Wingate on the Navajo Reservation. Subsequently, he received a doctorate from the University of Utah, and he returned to Gallup, where he traded in Indian jewelry and kachinas and opened his bookstore. Edward Abbey and Bulow began their friendship in 1970 at the University of Utah, where Bulow was a graduate student, and Abbey was a visiting professor. It was Bulow that managed to publish Ed's essay "Science with a Human Face" in the University of Utah literary magazine "Wasatch Front." This essay was later included in "The Journey Home." It is also significant to note that Bulow was a featured character in Edward Abbey's novel "The Fool's Progress.
