Description
Copenhagen: C. A. Reitzel, 1843. First Edition. Very Good. First edition of Soren Kierkegaard's best-known work, Either/Or. Octavo. Two volumes bound in contemporary half-calf over marbled boards; bound without the half-titles. Text in Danish. Very Good rubbing and wear to bindings, neatly rebacked with old spines preserved. Former owner names to preliminary blacks and owner's rubber stamp to title pages. Contents tanned, sporadically foxed and occasionally lightly stained. A lovely set. Either/Or, Danish philosopher Søren Aabye Kierkegaard's groundbreaking first published work. Only 525 copies of this edition were published in 1843 under an editorial pseudonym ("Victor Emerita") at the author's own expense. It was mostly written during his stay in Berlin, where he took notes on Schelling's Philosophy of Revelation. It includes essays of literary and music criticism and a set of romantic-like-aphorisms, as part of his larger theme of examining the reflective and philosophical structure of faith. He is widely considered to be the first existentialist philosopher. "As a thinker, Kierkegaard had to wait for the twentieth century to find his audience; he is now generally considered to be, however eccentric, one of the most important Christian philosophers," write Carter and Muir in Printing and the Mind of Man.

Paris: F. Savy, 1864. Second edition. 80 VERY FINE HAND-COLORED ENGRAVED PLATES OF EUROPEAN BUTTERFLIES AND MOTHS. Two 9 1/4 inches tall hardcover volumes, brown pebbled cloth binding, 3/4 brown leather spine with raised bands, black gilt leather title labels, leather corners, gilt rulings, marbled edges, patterned endpapers. Vol. I, 285 pp; Vol. II, hand-colored engraved half-title, 80 hand-colored steel engraved plates of lepidoptera and 2 uncolored plates of collecting equipment with tissue guards. Leather corners and spine edges rubbed, browning to preliminary pages and tissue guards, plates bright and clean, light pencilled species names and author citations following engraved generic names below the framed engravings. Very good in custom archival mylar covers. PIERRE-HIPPOLYTE LUCAS (1814 – 1899) was a French entomologist, assistant-naturalist at the Muséum national d'Histoire naturelle Paris. From 1839 to 1842 he studied fauna as part of the scientific commission on the exploration of Algeria. ALPHONSE NOEL (1838-1904) was a French artist who painted the engravings "following nature." HIPPOLYTE AND POLYDORE PAUQUET were French brothers and natural history illustrators. Hippolyte-Louis-Émile Pauquet (1797 – 1871) was the elder of the two and was largely responsible for engravings based on the illustrations by Polydore Jean-Charles Pauquet (1800 – 1879), though the two shared credit for their works. They first served as apprentices to their father, Jean Louis Charles Pauquet, and in 1812 enrolled at the École nationale supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris. Their work was exhibited at the Paris Salon through the 1820s and 1830s, though their recognition came mainly from their publications.

Description
New York, New York: Women Against Daddy Warbucks, 1970. Good to very good. Some toning, creasing/wear. One or two closed short tears.. On July 2nd, 1970, five members of the all-female coalition "Women Against Daddy Warbucks" broke into the midtown Manhattan office that held important 1-A draft files, denoting men who would soon be drafted into the Vietnam War. They destroyed these documents, all of the "1" and "A" letters on the typewriters, and posted graphic imagery of the devastation caused by the war in the offices; the next day, they turned themselves in and published the present statement several days later, including the full names of the women involved. Part of their statement, addressed to the Dow Chemical Company, Chase Bank, Standard Oil, and Shell (all tenants of Rockefeller), reads: "We are sending you the file of a dead soldier taken from Upper Manhattan's draft board on July 2, by a group of women. We are those women ... We send this file to tell you that we do not accept your measure of a man. He is not to be bought for oil or sold for plastics. He happens only once and that happening is sacred." Offered together with an original enamel pin depicting a feminist symbol with a fist inside. Pin measures approx. 1.5" in diameter. Tri-fold printed pamphlet, illus., measures 8.5" by 3.75" folded.

Description
Philadelphia: The Dropsie College for Hebrew and Cognate Learning, 1933. First edition. Hardcover. g. Quarto. XII, 78pp. Original brown cloth with gold lettering on spine. Publisher's logo on title page. Remarkable work shedding a new light on the history of the Second Jewish Commonwealth. The first Jewish commonwealth was ended by the Babylonian conquest of 586 B.C.E. The second Jewish commonwealth, although besieged by shortlived conquests, endured until it became a Roman province, "Palestina," in 44 B.C.E. and eventually ceased under Roman conquest in 70 C.E. Since then there have been various foreign rulers and conquerors over this region, but no sovereign, independent state until 1948. Then the third Jewish commonwealth in the form of the modern state of Israel was birthed in one day, once again in the territory of former Canaan, which was promised to the patriarchs of Israel and is claimed by God to be His own Land and the portion of His heritage. Moderate rubbing along edges of binding. Back cover partly scratched. Very minor age-toning along paper margin. Binding in overall fair to good-, interior in very good condition.

Description
Fairfield, Washington: Ye Galleon press, 1985. An exciting, early, and popular work, by a strong and courageous woman. Mrs. Bradley, along with her husband and his crew, were captured by desert Arabs after a shipwreck off Morocco. She endured six months of captivity and was ultimately ransomed by the British Consul. Unfortunately, according to Huntress, "This narrative is almost certainly spurious, another in the succession "Captivity and Sufferings of Mrs. Mary Velnet" and "Captivity and Sufferings of Maria Martin" having been extracted "directly" from Riley's narrative, "Sufferings in Africa." Nonetheless, Mrs. Bradley's book has wormed its way into the imaginations of generations and is now a part of shipwreck literature. See Huntress 202C. Bound in brown boards with gilt lettering. Fine condition. . 22.5 cm. 99 pp. Duotone frontispiece and illustrations.
