Description
Boston: William D. Ticknor & Company, 1846. FIRST EDITION. Preceding the title page is a 4-page publisher’s catalogue. Original flexible cloth, author and title in gilt on front cover. An excellent copy with the presentation signature of the author to M.B. Parkman. First edition; a second edition was published the same year. Originally a lecture given in 1830, he stresses the value and importance of exercise, a sound diet, and healthful habits for individuals of all ages. Of particular interest is his advice for physicians: “. . . a bad constitution in a professor of the healing art, keeps him at variance with all his duties. How can he heal others, in whom the springs of health act feebly and imperfectly?” His observations on the use of tobacco are surprisingly modern especially when he states that “no one, I suppose, will understand, that I intend to say, that tobacco is a specific for the production of cancer.” Cordasco, 40-1305; Eimas, Heirs of Hippocrates, 1343.

Description
Nancy: E. Ferry, 1893. Very good.. Satirical novelty pamphlet marking the Russian diplomatic visit to Toulon, France during the formation of the Franco-Russian Alliance, a key development in the lead up to World War I. In the late 1880s and early 1890s, Germany allied with Italy and broke its alliance with Russia, leading Russia to seek an alliance with France. The Franco-Russian Alliance formed after two diplomatic visits, first to Kronstadt and then to Toulon. This book depicts a series of conversations between people commenting on the Russians' arrival at Toulon: a Frenchman and a Russian meeting again after sharing a drink in Kronstadt; a Frenchman swaying with a bottle of wine captioned [in translation], "I celebrated the arrival of the Russians so much that I can no longer stand"; a German bragging to an Italian (with stereotypical names) that "I would eat them in two mouthfuls, the French and the Russians," while the Italian replies, "I'm not that greedy, me, I'd be happy with a plate of macaroni." The face printed on the interior of each wrapper is visible throughout - each leaf has a head-shaped whole cut out so that all the figures are connected with the same face. As shifting alliances created more unease, Great Britain joined the Franco-Russian Alliance, forming the Triple Entente: the famous "entangled alliances" that led to the First World War. Scarce: no holdings recorded in OCLC, and no auction records. 6.75'' x 4.25''. Original side-stiched, hand-colored printed wrappers. Illustrated with hand-colored wood engravings throught. [12] pages, each with a head-size hole as issued. Repaired closed tears on wrappers and one internal leaf, spine subtly repaired. A bit of soiling, but overall clean with vivid coloring.

Description
New York: American-Mitchell Fashion Publishers, Inc, 1952. Vol. XVI, No. 2, Section 2. Plastic Spiral. Card stock covers. Near Fine. Folio, 36.5 by 26.5 cm. Front wrap counted in pagination, which goes up to 35, followed by a folded sheet color plate and then two glossy pages. Seventeen plates, nine of which are color plates, including the one double-paged folding plate. Versos of plates are blank but still counted in the pagination. The models are all based on painted artwork -- there are no photographs. All the plates up to the last one, which is the fold-out plate, show one or two elongated men. Their attire includes suits, single and double breasted, more casual sports jackets, formal wear, including tails, and overcoats. In almost all cases the men are wearing or carrying hats. Occasionally there is a sketchy background or prop of some sort to provide atmosphere, but that is in this catalogue very minimal compared to other catalogues of this sort. Also on the page will be a small outline drawing of the back of the piece(s) being showcased. Big surprise: all the men are conventionally handsome, tall, upbeat, etc. This catalogue doesn't have the token husky men or distinguished middle aged or older men. The folding plate shows four drawn women, the men's female counterparts, wearing tailored suits or overcoats. A distinctive feature of this catalogue is that the first and last leaf have concise descriptions of the clothing the drawn models are wearing on the plates within. The last page is a promotion of a book on design by the fashion company's technical director. Condition: There is a small chip on the upper front cover edge. Light wear otherwise.

London: Verso, 2020. First edition. Hardcover. New/new. 286pp. [21.5 cm] Black cloth over boards with silver text stamped on spine. Black dust jacket with white text. From the publisher: "From the criminalization of HIV to the frenzy over “pedophile priests,” from unexamined assumptions about the murder of Matthew Shepard to the accusations made against Woody Allen, from Brett Kavanaugh to Abu Ghraib, Wypijewski takes some of the most famous stories of recent decades and turns them inside out. The result is a searing indictment of modern sexual politics. She exposes the myriad ways moral panic and a punitive culture are intertwined, considering along the way the nature of pleasure, censorship, self-deception, memory and much more.
