Description
London: Printed by J. Smeeton, 1802. Thomas Rowlandson's Treatise on Modern Education With Eight Superb Hand Colored Etched Plates ROWLANDSON, Thomas. M'CRINGER, Joel [aka J[ames]B[rydges]. WILLYAMS. A Compendious Treatise on Modern Education, in which the following interesting subjects are liberally discussed: The Nursery, Private Schools, Public Schools, Universities, Gallantry, Duelling, Gaming, Suicide. By the late Joel M'Cringer, D.D. F.R.S. A.S.S. Rector of the United Parishes of Pigworth, Goosebridge, and Honeytown, in Middlesex ; Vicar of Cornsteadcum-Haybury, in the same county--Prebendary of St. Glebemore--Whitehall preacher, and domestic chaplain to the Right Honourable Lord Trainwell; to which also are added, coloured designs both characteristic and illustrative, delineated by J.B. W******* Esq. and etched by Thomas Rowlandson. London: Printed by J. Smeeton, 1802. First edition. Oblong folio (11 1/4 x 13 3/4 inches; 286 x 349 mm.). [ii, title, verso blank], [i]-viii, [9]-34. Eight superb hand-colored etched plates, all with etched borders and titles. Some marginal water staining (not affecting images or text) throughout, light offsetting onto letterpress, not obscuring text. Plates watermarked 1801. Old drab boards uncut. Expertly rebacked to style, later endpapers, light rubbing to board edges. An acceptable copy of an excessively rare Rowlandson title. "This title page introduces a set of prints that Rowlandson etched after drawings by Willyams, a Cornish, university-educated lieutenant-colonel who supplied supporting text using the pseudonym Joel McCringer. Rowlandson's characteristic elegance does not disguise the dark human impulses being satirized. Modern education, it is suggested, does little to teach self-control, wisdom or empathy. Scenes show boys hurting chicks and insects, youths drinking, and young men carousing and gambling. Many of the images respond to themes that Hogarth addressed in his print series "Stages of Cruelty" and "A Modern Midnight Conversation"(1751 and 1733, Metropolitan Museum of Art 32.35 (118) and 19.1.77). OCLC locate just four copies in libraries and institutions worldwide: Yale University Library (CT, US), Harvard University (MA, US), Princeton University (NJ, US), Southwestern University (TX, US). "An exceedingly rare work" (Fitz Eugene Dixon sale, Anderson Galleries New York, January 7th, 1937, lot 189). A rare and charming satire on educational treatises, with illustrations designed by J. B. Willyams (1772-1820) and etched by Rowlandson (1757-1827). Rowlandson frequently etched the designs of other satirists or amateurs, generally improving the designs and using his skill with figures and settings to balance the compositions and bring the characters to life. In all of his prints after another's designs his style and humor is detectable, if not the driving force of the print. The inclusion of Rowlandson's publication line on the plates ('Pubd May 10 1802, by T. Rowlandson, No.1 James Street, Adelphi'). The book was published by Smeeton so Rowlandson had also published the prints separately himself. The Plates: 1. The Nursery 2. Private School 3. Public School 4. University 5. School for Gallantry 6. School for Honour 7. School for Modern Greeks 8. School for Modern Romans Bobins II, 717; Dixon, 189; Falk, p. 213; Grego II, p. 41; Not in Abbey; Not in Tooley;.

De Sectione Symphyseos Ossium Pubis Admittenda... nova editio, aucta & emendata. Paris: in medicorum scholis apud autorem, 1778. A new edition, expanded and ammended, the same year as the first edition. Small octavo. [iii]-114, [1, errata], [1, blank] pp. Bound without half-title. A treatise arguing in favor of symphysiotomy over Caesarean section during childbirth. Together three works in one small octavo volume (6 1/2 x 4 1/8 inches; 166 x 104 mm), containing Mesmer's work and a response supporting it. Contemporary quarter sheep over paste paper boards. Spine stamped in gilt with brown morocco gilt lettering label. Edges dyed red. Overall an extremely clean nice copy. "The manifesto of animal magnetism. On the eve of the French Revolution, Mesmer captured the imagination of the Parisian public with his remarkable ability to effect cures by throwing his patients into 'mesmeric' trances, and with his philosophical system aimed at creating amore perfect human society through harmony with the physical universe. As much a social movement as a medical practice, mesmerism spread quickly throughout Europe and America, and became such a mania in pre-Revolutionary France that between 1779 and 1789 more literature was generated on mesmerism than on any other single topic. At first Mesmer used actual magnets to perform his cures but later dispensed with these on the ground that nearly all substances could be magnetized by touch. He employed either direct contact between physician and patient, or contact via the 'baquet,' a tub-like apparatus which could be charged with the universal fluid like a Leyden jar. Mesmer always insisted on the physical nature of his cures, which he initially ascribed to magnetic forces or electricity; later he devised the theory of a 'universal fluid' acting on the nervous system, which was susceptible to this fluid on account of its inherent property of 'animal magnetism.' It is ironic that Mesmer refused to credit the agency of the mind in any of his cures, because his discovery led to the large-scale investigation of psychological phenomena, and is thus an ancestor of psychopathology and psychotherapy" (Norman Library). "Eslon, a docteur régent of the Faculté de Médecine, was the first important Parisian convert to mesmerism. His outspoken support and practice of Mesmer's techniques caused dissention within the Faculté and so antagonized its conservative majority that he was eventually expelled. Eslon later broke with Mesmer and set up a rival mesmeric treatment center in Paris, where he practiced his own version of animal magnetism. When the royal commission to investigate mesmerism was formed it was Eslon's practice and theory of animal magnetism that the commission examined, much to the displeasure of orthodox mesmerists. The present work is Eslon's major treatise on magnetism, describing his first encounter with animal magnetism and how he became convinced of its efficacy. It also gives the details of eighteen cases treated by Mesmer under Eslon's observation, one of the patients being Eslon himself" (Norman Library). Garrison and Morton 4992.1. Norman Library M4. Norman Library M77. PMM 225. HBS 68250. $4,500.

Description
1942. TOKYO NICHINICHI SHINBUNSHA. Teikoku kaigun no iyo. 36 ff., illustrated throughout with photomontages. Oblong 4to, 350 x 255 mm., bound in publisher's illustrated blue cloth stamped in silver, in original printed cardboard slipcase. Tokyo: Tokyo Nichinichi Shinbunsha, 1942. A spectacular photo book on the Japanese Navy in World War II. It is two parts, the first one covers naval training, and the second part deals with the unfolding course of the war, recording of Japanese successes from Pearl Harbor, Malaya, New Guinea, and other parts of South East Asia. This book is one of the first to have an extended pictorial account of the bombing of Pearl Harbor. It also includes numerous Soviet-style photographic plates of naval guns, battleships, military planes, as well as photographs of operations in China, Java, Borneo, Philippines, New Guinea, and other areas in South-East Asia. None of the images are credited to a particular photographer but it includes work by Matsugi Fujio and (possibly) Kimura Ihei. Some wear to the cardboard slipcase, but the book is in a remarkable state of preservation. Rare.

Description
Richmond, VA: Virginia Illustrating Company, 1917. This collection of seven issues of The Hartford Daily Times, runs from January 13 to May 7, 1851. Each issue is 21 ½” x 16”, folded into quarters. 4 pages, 2 unbound leaves. This daily for the Hartford, Connecticut area cost $5 per year. The 1st, 3rd, and 4th pages contain ads for everything from groceries to insurance to miracle medical cures. Page 2 contains poetry and news stories at local, regional, national, and international news.~ ~Alfred E. Burr never sought political office, but was heavily involved with the Democratic party in Connecticut. His widely-circulated newspaper granted him significant influence over the platform, in addition to the influence over his readers. The Daily Times reflects his political affiliation, mentioning in most of these issues the state ticket and discussing political events. ~~Mr. Burr frequently discusses the Fugitive Slave Act of 1850, which required the arrest and return of enslaved individuals captured in free states such as Connecticut. Part of the Compromise of 1850, this act was supported by Democrats as a necessary measure in order to preserve the Union. In the February 21 issues, a mocking article discusses the frequent “surprising” rescues of captured fugitive slaves in Boston; other issues cover cases under trial. Other frequent subjects include the California gold rush, which lasted from 1848-1855. ~~Issues include that of January 13, 1851 (No. 2205), Jan. 22, 1851 (No. 2213), February 21, 1851 (No. 2239), March 7, 1851 (No. 2251), March 11, 1851 (No. 2254), May 3, 1851 (No. 2299), and May 7, 1851 (No. 2302). ~.

Washington DC: Government Printing Office. Fair. 1865. First Edition. Hardcover. (no dust jacket, as issued) [heavily worn, including exposure of boards at all corners, but binding is intact; foxing/discoloration to endpapers and early pages; ex-private library, with label of W.H. Edwards, Downers Grove, Illinois on front pastedown]. The official Congressional report on one of the major debacles of the Civil War, known historically as the Battle of the Crater. An early engagement in the Union Army's siege of Petersburg, Virginia, this event involved the detonation of 8,000 pounds of gunpowder packed into a mine shaft that had been dug by Union troops underneath a Confederate fortification. The idea was to blow a big hole in the enemy's defensive line, through which the troops were to then charge, overwhelming the enemy; however, things went badly almost from the get-go (when the 500+-foot fuse fizzled out, and some poor schmuck was ordered to crawl into the tunnel and re-light it). The explosion was eventually achieved, and a gigantic crater was created (and nearly 300 Confederate soldiers instantly killed), but almost everything thereafter went wrong, and in the end both sides suffered massive casualties (about 850 men killed and a couple of thousand wounded) and the unsuccessful assault, instead of bringing a quick end to the siege as its planners had hoped, was merely the precursor to another eight months of brutal trench warfare. General Ulyssses S. Grant called the battle "the saddest affair I have witnessed in this war," and part of the aftermath was the Congressional investigation which resulted in this very report, which includes personal testimony and statements from many of those involved as well as numerous supporting documents. The two generals most directly responsible -- Gen. Ambrose Burnside and Gen. George Meade -- both testified at length, and others interrogated by the Commitee included Lt. Col. Henry Pleasants (the engineer who came up with the exploding-mine scheme in the first place), Brig. Gen. Edward Ferrero (commander of a division of African-American troops which suffered heavy casualties in the battle), and U.S. Grant himself. This copy bears a five-line inscription on the second front endpaper (see scanned image accompanying this listing), but all I can make anything out of is the third line: "with the compliments of." (I doubt that the signature is authorial -- since there was no author, per se, for this Congressional report -- but it's possible there may be some historical or associational significance to the inscription and/or signature, a puzzlement which I will leave to the eventual purchaser to work out. The book's one-time owner, W.H. Edwards, was a businessman and bank president in Downers Grove, Ill. (the latter position assumed in 1898), but the inscribee's name does not resemble "Edwards" at all, so I assume he was not the book's first owner.) .
