Description
London: Printed by D. Maxwell, and are to be sold by Robert Horn at the Turk's Head in Cornhill [illegible], 1659. Small octavo (12 x 7 cm.), [2], 155 [10], 2-31, [1] pages. A2, B8, C-I12, K3 (-K4, and ?K5) of “table for preserving, conserving, candying and perfuming, &c.”). Stated eighth edition enlarged. The final edition of Murrell’s ‘two books’ consisting of The First Book of Cookery, The Second Book of Cookery, and A New Book of Sewing and Carving, the second book with a separate title page. The New Book... was cribbed from The Boke of Kervynge (London 1508) [see Oxford, pages 1ff.]. One of Murrell’s major contributions to English culinary literature was to bring French recipes to England some forty years before the competition. This and the previous edition (1650) are the only editions of Murrell that are contemporary with the other leading English cookery texts of the 1650s: The French Cook of La Varenne (1653 and 1654) and Marnette’s translation of Le Patissier François (The Perfect Cook of 1656). As to the contents and tone of the work I’ll let the title page of the second book speak for the whole. “[W]herein is set forth the newest and most commendable fashion of dressing, boyling, sowcing, or roasting all manner either flesh, fish or any kind of fowle. Together with an exact order of making kickshawes, or made dishes of any fashion, fit to beautifie either noblemens or gentlemans table. All set forth according to the now new English and French fashion." ~ Textblock contiguous but partially dis-bound. In a brown buckram chemise and slip case. Pages are brittle. [A1] title, within an ornamental border, loose and frayed at edges, with loss of last line and the date in as well as some of the border; Some fraying of first few leaves, not affecting text. Final leaf or two (K4, K5) lacking. All in all, good. Very rare. Known only in one copy in a private collection, and a single title leaf in the British Library (see Notaker). Provenance: Woolley & Wallis sale on 19th June 1996 of some books belonging to Nancy Spain, Isabella Beeton’s great-niece, and authoress of Mrs. Beeton and her Husband, (London: Collins 1948). Ex libris Joan Dawson. [OCLC locates no copy of this edition; [OCLC locates no copy of this edition; COPAC (2019) locates a fragment – only the title page – of this edition at the British Library; Notaker 525.7 (locates the BL fragment and indicates a copy in a private collection (this copy); Oxford page 19].

Description
[Switzerland or Germany, 1835. Folio notebook; loose gatherings in separate, ribbon-tied boards (38 x 25 cm.). Two hundred forty original drawings, with accompanying manuscript text, on individual trimmed leaves, each mounted thematically with others of its type, with brass pins to the inside of folio double leafs. Text is in German, with some plant names also in Latin. The lot housed in the original string-tied portfolio boards, heavy green cardstock with manuscript inscription to front. ~ A most uncommon manuscript work, profusely illustrated with pencil drawings, encyclopedic in its scope, devoted strictly to the study and classification of mushrooms, and dating to the formative era of medicinal mycology. Manuscript field notes accompany the drawings, in the form of scientific annotations, classification references, and occasionally with the month in which a living specimen was either collected or observed in its habitat. The notebook was made by an unidentified mycologist/botanist, and illustrates various species of fungi - edible, medicinal, and toxic. Numerous specimens shown were, and still are, popular and beneficial in homeopathic treatments. ~ The author of the present work is unknown, though the work is contemporary to that of notable pioneer mycologists such as Elias Magnus Fries, Christian Hendrik Persoon, Anton de Bary, and Lewis David von Schweinitz. The notes suggest that the writer observed living fungi specimens, between the months of May and October 1830, in Switzerland, Germany, and possibly London, drawing them on the spot, and subsequently identifying and classifying them according to the works of eighteenth century botanists. Specific regions identified include Muünsterlingen and Scherzingen in Switzerland, as well as St. Katharine, which may be the ancient “Royal Peculiar” jurisdiction by the Tower of London that became a civil parish until 1895. In the nineteenth century, St. Katharine’s by the Tower grew to be a village, flanking the banks of the River Thames. ~ Some light soiling to edges of leaves, but mostly clean and supple (the drawings and field notes were pinned on to a quality thick cotton rag paper). Rubbing and edge-wear to paper covered, green boards; light soil and some inks marks; ribbons present and nearly complete. Very good.

New York: Currier & Ives, 33 Spruce Street, 1907. Ephemera no binding. Very good. [Nathaniel Currier]. Varnished wood frame 17 1/16" x 12 15/16"; print with margins 14 1/8" x 10", within the print border 12 x 8 3/8"; hand-colored lithograph; in frame as found; damp staining to margins, foxing to verso; print removed, glass cleaned, new archival backing and wood panel frame back replaced; very good. Conningham 1931. A small but charming and happy Currier & Ives hand-colored lithographic print of two children and their pets, a girl holding a cat and a boy with a dog. One of their lesser-known prints, it is attributed to Nathaniel Currier (1813-1888) with approximate print dates of 1896 through 1907. The dress of the children would suggest an earlier era, but the company's address at 33 Spruce Street in New York places the printing in these dates and after Currier's death. Frederic A. Conningham, in his exhaustive volume Currier & Ives Prints, An Illustrated Check List, lists no other printing dates or addresses.

Troy: Obadiah Penniman, 1803. First American edition (stated). 1803 FIRST AMERICAN EDITION OF SWISS PHYSIOLOGIST'S LANDMARK TREATISE ON PHYSIOLOGY FROM 1747. 13x22 cm hardcover, full leather binding, gilt red leather label to spine, contemporary ink signature of W. Parlier and bookplate of Robert L Chevalier MD to front paste-down, binding tight, [i-iv], 498 pp, scattered light foxing, very good in custom archival mylar cover. ALBERT VON HALLER (1708 – 1777) was a Swiss anatomist, physiologist, naturalist, encyclopedist, bibliographer and poet. A pupil of Herman Boerhaave, he is often referred to as "the father of modern physiology." When still hardly fifteen he was already the author of numerous metrical translations from Ovid, Horace and Virgil. In 1752, at the University of Göttingen, Haller published his thesis (De partibus corporis humani sensibilibus et irritabilibus) discussing the distinction between "sensibility" and "irritability" in organs, suggesting that nerves were "sensible" because of a person's ability to perceive contact while muscles were "irritable" because the fiber could measurably shorten on its own, regardless of a person's perception, when excited by a foreign body. Later in 1757, he conducted a famous series of experiments to distinguish between nerve impulses and muscular contractions. Haller then visited London, Paris, Basel, and Bern. His scientific researches procured for him from George II in 1736 a call to the chair of medicine, anatomy, botany and surgery in the newly founded University of Göttingen. He became a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1743, a foreign member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences in 1747, and was ennobled in 1749. Offered here is the first American edition of the Edinburgh English translation of GARRISON-MORTON No. 585 Primae lineae physiologiae in usum praelectionum academicarum, first published in Göttingen by A. Vandenhoeck, 1747.

Leuven: Peeters, 2007. First edition. Hardcover. near fine. Quarto (12" x 8-1/2"). viii, 138, (2)pp. Red cloth lettered in gilt. Illustrated with numerous drawings, archaeological ground plans and 7 maps. An ex-library book but with minimal rubber stamps on title page & at bottom of text block, otherwise fine. The content of this volume centers around archaeological fieldwork carried out by Yagodin and others on the Ustiurt Plateau, a remote upland desert region lying between the Aral and the Caspian seas, in the southernmost part of the Asian steppes where ancient Nomadic groups used to winter to take advantage of the relatively mild climate. The Duana region is peculiar, however, in that there are also structures, which Yagodin and his team have interpreted as sanctuaries, shedding some light for the first time on how ancient nomadic cult practices might have influenced on the cults and religions of the settled lands in the South. (OCLC) The Aralo-Caspian region is the southern heartland of the Eurasian steppe and in its remotest quarters it preserves a rich record of the nomads who have ranged for many centuries across its grasslands. Between the Aral and the Caspian Seas lies the Ustiurt Plateau, an isolated upland area of semi-desert that in past centuries was once the favoured winter grazing land for many of the nomadic tribes of central Eurasia. Professor Vadim Yagodin pioneered work in this difficult region and through several decades documented its history, mainly through evidence gathered from cemeteries. Duana lies in a beautiful setting overlooking the western shores of the Aral Sea. Its importance rests not only in the multi-period burial complex but also in the nomad sanctuaries that have been found there. (Publisher) Contents: The Aralo-Caspian region / A.V.G. Betts -- The duanaarchaeological complex / V.N. Yagodin ; [translated from the Russian] -- Human remains / S. Blau.(OCLC) Supplement 43 of the Peeters series, "Ancient Near Eastern Studies.
