Description
1855. First Edition. BROWN, W[illia]m Wells. The American Fugitive in Europe. Sketches of Places and People Abroad. With a Memoir of the Author. Boston / Cleveland / New York: John P. Jewett / Jewett, Proctor & Worthington / Sheldon, Lamport & Blakeman, 1855. Octavo, original blind-stamped gilt-lettered brown cloth. $5800.First edition of Brown's substantially revised and expanded Three Years in Europe (1853), newly titled as American Fugitive in Europe with 12 new chapters, issued within months of his return from years of exile, determined to continue his work as a soldier ""against the prison-house of slavery,"" a core work in Brown’s ""substantial legacy,"" with striking engraved frontispiece portrait, especially elusive in original cloth.Born into slavery, William Wells Brown ""remains an enduring figure in African American history and literature for his writing, his activism and his remarkable story of survival and triumph over slavery, illiteracy and systematic racism."" He attempted his first escape in 1833, only to be trapped by slave catchers. When he fled again in 1834, he added ""Wells Brown"" to his name in honor of a Quaker who aided his escape. When Brown met Frederick Douglass in 1843, he joined the abolitionist cause as a speaker, and soon afterward Brown's autobiographical Narrative was published. When one of his slave owners, Enoch Price, offered to buy his freedom, Brown publicized his refusal, saying ""'God made me as free as he did Enoch. Price'… this refusal necessitated his removal to Europe, which he arranged in 1849 as a delegate to the International Peace Congress in Paris."" Confronted by the Fugitive Slave Act, Brown remained in Europe until 1854 when he ""was persuaded to let friends buy his freedom so he could return to the United States and continue his work in the abolition movement"" (Gates, ed. African American Lives, 119-20). Brown returned ""a changed man to a changed nation… the legislative war over slavery had so intensified that the threat of violence was in the air."" His years of exile had produced Three Years in Europe (1852), ""one of his most significant"" works, which he substantially expanded for this first edition of his pioneering American Fugitive in Europe that features a ""dozen new chapters"" (Greenspan, William Wells Brown, 313, 327). It further asserts Brown's resolve to be, in his words, a soldier ""against the prison-house of slavery… the most cruel system of oppression that ever blackened the character or hardened the heart of man."" Here Brown's wide-ranging knowledge counters ""racist arguments of the time while also engaging his readers in extended antislavery commentary."" He is also famed as the first African American novelist for Clotel (1853), and renowned as a playwright and historian whose works negotiated ""a shift from 'fugitive slave' to 'author"" (Ernest, ed. My Southern Home, xix-xxi). Brown's ""publications, together with his reform efforts, are a substantial legacy"" (ANB). First edition: with the striking frontispiece portrait ""drawn & engraved by R. Woodman,"" featuring Brown's facsimile signature. With his addition of ""Opinions of the British Press"" at rear. Sabin 8586. Blockson 1973. Contemporary owner inscription of ""Holland and Hooper"" in Walpole, New Hampshire, dated ""Nov. 1855""—the year of publication.Interior generally fresh with trace of soiling, light foxing mainly to early leaves, trace of edge-wear, scant bit of toning to rear board of bright gilt-stamped unrestored cloth. A very scarce near-fine copy.

Description
1856. PHILLIPS, Wendell. The Constitution. A Pro-Slavery Compact: Or, Extracts from the Madison Papers, Etc. New York: American Anti-Slavery Society, 1856. Octavo, original gilt- and blind-stamped dark brown cloth; pp. (1-5),6-208. $1400.Second revised edition, third overall, of Phillips' influential work, pivotal to abolitionists calling for radical dissolution of the union, published the year before the Dred Scott decision, here arguing the 1787 Constitution's three-fifths clause, its Fugitive Slave clause and other key provisions demonstrated ""there was not the slightest trace of freedom in the pro-slavery Constitution.""Phillips shared with Garrison and William Bowditch a view of the 1787 Constitution as undeniably pro-slavery: ""a covenant with death, and an agreement with hell"" (Fehrenbacher, Slave-Holding Republic, 39). Here he points to its five provisions as clear evidence of this view: the three-fifths clause; the ""limitation on the power of Congress to prohibit the 'migration or importation' of slaves until 1808""; the Fugitive Slave clause; ""the clause affording Congress the power to suppress insurrection; the clause insuring, upon application from a state, federal assistance in the suppression of domestic violence"" (Cover, Justice Accused, 151-52). With these, ""slaves would be counted for representation in Congress, thus augmenting the South's power in both the House of Representatives and the electoral college."" Further, free states were prohibited ""from liberating fugitive slaves"" and instead were required to ensure that they be ""'delivered up' on demand of the owner"" (Finkelman, Founders and Slavery, 144-45). Phillips' work is ""a masterpiece of compilation of all then available data on the intentions and opportunities of the framers of the U.S. Constitution with respect to slavery"" (Cover, 151n). He particularly references the 1840 publication of James Madison's Notes on constitutional debates, contending this made ""it clear that the Framers struck a compromising deal with the devil… confirmed by the actions of the U.S. Supreme Court, which repeatedly interpreted the Constitution as offering no legal sanctuary for the nation's enslaved population"" (Knowles, Seeing the Light, 532).To Phillips, one of the most eloquent of the Garrisonians, ""there was not the slightest trace of freedom in the pro-slavery Constitution—a compact… 'cemented with human blood'—and there could be no hope of redeeming it"" (Wilentz, No Property in Man, 228-29). While Phillips' influence was central in promoting this argument—""not until the judicial claims and successes of proslavery forces between 1840 and 1860—the gag rule, the Amistad and the Creole, the Mexican War, the new Fugitive Act of 1850, Kansas-Nebraska, and finally Dred Scott—was this vision given a degree of credibility"" (Cover, 209-10). The 1787 Constitution ""ultimately proved unable to bring a legal end to slavery in the U.S., and it took the 13th Amendment… to strike the specter of slavery from the text of the Constitution. However, many members of the antislavery community concluded that slavery was actually unconstitutional"" (Knowles, 532-33). ""Third Edition, Enlarged"" on title page: preceded by the 1844 first edition; 1845 ""first enlarged edition."" Bookplate of William P. Palmer. Small embossed stamp of Western Reserve Historical Society to title page, margin (p.49).Text fresh with faintest scattered foxing. Expert restoration to inner hinges, pastedowns, and original cloth.

Description
St. Louis: A. R. Fleming & Co, 1893. First edition. Very Good. Original publisher's cloth binding with gilt to spine and front board. Brown coated endpapers. Some wear to corners and head and tail of spine. Some staining to covers and corresponding dampstaining to corners of endpapers. A very good copy, internally clean and unmarked. Collating viii, 9-220: complete including frontis. The first book published by a policewoman in America. Despite assumptions to the contrary, "women have served in organized law enforcement in the U.S. almost from the beginning. The first police departments in America were established in the 19th century, and in 1845 women began working as matrons in New York City jails" (Smith). The practice rapidly spread across the country, where police forces needed assistance in supervising female prisoners and dealing with the specific challenges faced by this population. Women's clubs -- particularly the American Female Moral Reform Society and the Women's Christian Temperance Union -- urged recognition for the widespread violence perpetrated on female prisoners and called for meaningful change. "It was these women's groups that fought for these distinctly female positions, demanding there was a need for women to take care of women...and they provided police departments with funds for paid matron positions until the government could be convinced of the necessity of having women in the police force" (Maiorano). Louisa Harris, having served in the prisons and courts of Missouri for nearly a decade, became the first of these women to publish about her experience. The resulting narrative reflects an awareness of the social forces that put women at a disadvantage, driving them toward arrests or recidivism. Domestic violence, poverty, and the stigma placed on sex work all do damage to women; and according to Harris, these women should not be treated as or placed with violent offenders when they could, with proper assistance, find safety or build more secure lives. This is the motivation for Harris' memoir. In the introduction she explains that while she hesitated to publish the book which might in some readers awaken a "morbid curiosity," she ultimately moved ahead because "I reasoned that if the world knew more about the unfortunate and their revolting experiences, together with the causes that promote misfortune, there might be more true sympathy exhibited...While I have from personal observation become familiar with so-called criminals, I have had the opportunity to learn many of the causes of the committal of crimes. The law seldom recognizes the palliating influences, but humanity should." Harris calls for reforming the handling of juvenile offenders, advocates for therapeutic programs for young women, and taps into a number of other systemic issues of concern within policing today. Very Good.

Description
Unbound. Very good. This four-page letter was written by David W. Cunnningham on October 10, 1854, from Santiago, Chile to his mother in Boston. Its mailing envelope is not present, but an old photocopy (included) shows the letter was forwarded to Mrs. Andrew Cunningham.of Boston by Loring Brothers & Company. David W. was a Harvard-trained engineer known for his work on the Cochituate Aqueduct, the Manchester and Lawrence Railroad, the Ogdensburg and Lake Champlain Railroad, the Lowell Waterworks, the Stillwater Water Works, and the Tarkio Valley Railroad. This letter was written after Chile hired him to begin evaluating the best way to construct a railroad across the Andes. (Some sources claim incorrectly that he supervised the building of the road, but work on the Ferrocarril Trasandino was not started until 1887, over 25 years after Cunningham had departed. Regardless, David was captivated by life in Santiago. “I have left the River Maule and am now making my first visit to the Capital of this Republic, which is properly my headquarters, since all instructions & payments are rec’d here. I am favorably disappointed in finding such a great city, where I had expected but an extensive collection of Adoba one story buildings. The City has a population of . . . 120,000, is situated on an immense plain at the foot of the Codilleras, whose high peaks covered with perpetual snow, rise up in majestic grandeur 18,000 ft: which from their immense size appear to be hanging over our heads, when in reality, they are many leagues distant. At sunrise and sunset, nothing can be compared to them . . . in the evening they take the most exquisite pink & rose colored hues. Thay also serve as a fast refrigerator for the whole country, for no matter how hot the day may be, the nights are always deliciously cool. . .. The river Maipacho . . . runs through the city and it affords crystal water. . ... On its banks is built a dike, which protects the city . . . during flood [and] forms an admirable walk, nicely paved, and three miles long, & planted the whole distance with beautiful Poplars. At sunset you find many of the fashionable here. . .. Although Called a Republic, this is really an aristocracy, and there are many exceedingly rich people, whose wealth is millions, consisting of mines [and] Estates, which are not measured by acres, but by square miles. . .. Nothing can exceed the magnificences of the interior of their houses, the richest stuffs that Europe can produce, and all their table service of silver & gold, even to that article which is kept under the bed [and] their carriages . . . are like carriages of princes, frequently having two or three footmen. . .. It would amuse you to see the ladies walking on the Alamada . . . dressed as though they were in a ball room. . .. The young ladies . . . are very agreeable. I get smitten with one every evening but my love lasts only until I see another. . .. I have not failed to see some finely educated & beautiful angels who have left a more permanent impression. . ..“ . Upon returning the United States, Cunningham moved to Texas following the U. S Civil War, farmed in North Dakota, and finally retired in California in 1895 where he lived until his death in 1916. .

Description
Gainesville: University Presses of Florida, 1979. First Edition. Octavo, blue cloth (hardcover), gilt letters, xiv + 223 pp. Fine (As New) in a Very Good dust jacket with light edgewear. From dust jacket: The twenty-one essays by Thomas Pyles in this collection bear witness to the vitality of the English language and to its integrity in the midst of great variety in use. Published over a 34-year period by this distinguished scholar of English language study and usage, many of these writings are otherwise not readily available. The selections are presented here for the benefit of laymen as well as students of the language in honor of their author, a master of English prose style, who, by his example, has set and continues to set a standard in matter and manner to which all linguistics should aspire. The essays are grouped under five topical headings: the pronunciation of Latin in England and America; currently fashionable forms of expression; unwitting indecorum in the use of taboo words; curiosities in the bestowal of names and titles; and popular versus scholarly views of language usage and change. Although diverse in subject matter, the essays present a consistent view of English usage and of the attitudes that English language set forth with the precision, craft, and style that Thomas Pyles’s students and colleagues look forward to in all his work.

Reams in the Desert is the first book to explore the complete story behind the West's pioneer attempt at paper production. The unlikely site was a desert valley in northern Utah. Paper had been made commercially in the United States for well over a century by the time that the first paper made west of the Mississippi River emerged from the vat. Complicated by isolation, the story of Utah's small and short-lived paper industry stands as one of the few success stories of Latter-day Saint-sponsored "home manufacture.".
