Description
1912. Asai Chū 淺井忠. Mokugo Zuanshū 默語圖案集. Kyōto : Unsōdō. Meiji 45 [1912]. 1st printing Meiji 42 [1909]. This is the third printing of Meiji 45 [1912]. Printed paper covers over boards, tassel-bound. In the original clasped chitsu with a paper label. This tall 4to sized volume (36.5 x 25cm is a wonderful deluxe compendium of Asai’s design work. Asai Chū 淺井忠 (1856-1907) is famous as one of the two most important western-style painters of the late 19th and early 20th centuries in Japan, but his design work, as well, was at the forefront of the international design revolution of his day. In the early years of the 20th century after his return from several years in France and before his premature death in 1907, Asai taught design and painting in Kyoto and influenced some of the most important Japanese artist and designers who flourished thereafter. This work, published posthumously by his friends, is masterfully printed by Unsodo and includes 24 pages of color woodblock prints after his designs and 41 pages of collotypes. This copy is in lovely condition throughout, though the chitsu is a bit worn and soiled. Though it went through several printings early in this century, of which this is the third, the printing runs appear to have been very small and the printing quality is very good. It has become a very scarce book. Complete, as issued.

Description
Halle ... Leipzig: auf Kosten des Verfassers; in kommission bey Schwickert zu Leipzig, und in der Hemmerdeschen Buchhandlung zu Halle, 1787. Octavo. Half mid-tan calf with marbled boards, spine in decorative compartments gilt with dark orange and dark purple title labels gilt, red edges. 1f. (recto title, verso blank), [3]-211 (text), [212] ("Nacherinnerung"), 213-240 pp. typeset music. With small handstamps in purple ink to title, one "Geschenkt von Herrn Prof, Stöbe," one a withdrawal stamp from the Stadtbibliothek Littau, and one indecipherable, with numerical annotation in ink; occasional annotations to text in pencil and to endpapers, including ownership signature in ink, "G. Koerner 1830," along with notes regarding binding. Binding slightly worn, rubbed, and bumped; remnants of paper label to foot of spine; endpapers foxed and stained. Uniform light browning; some foxing; paper loss to blank upper margin of pp. 13/14, with one small burn hole not affecting text. An attractive, crisp and wide-margined copy overall. First Edition. Gregory-Bartlett p. 275 (lacking the Anhang containing the musical examples). Not in Cortot, Wolffheim, or Hirsch. RISM Écrits p. 847. Türk, a German theorist and composer, received his musical education at the Dresden Kreuzschule under the Kantor G.A. Homilius, "a former pupil of Bach and teacher of J.A. Hiller and J.F. Reichardt. In 1772 he enrolled at the University of Leipzig, but continued his music studies under the guidance of Hiller. ... He took keyboard (clavichord) lessons in Leipzig from J.W. Hassler, a pupil of J.C. Kittel and therefore also in the tradition of J.S. Bach. ... In 1787 Turk was appointed organist and musical director of the Marktkirche (Liebfrauenkirche), the principal church in Halle (the position earlier held by W.F. Bach). ... In the same year his book Von den wichtigsten Pflichten eines Organisten appeared, the first of the fundamental theoretical works which were to occupy him for the greater part of his life. ... With this Beytrag zur Verbesserung der musikalischen Liturgie, as the work was sub-titled, he hit on a subject of great topical interest in view of the increasing decline in the importance of ecclesiastical matters, including church music, in the face of the Enlightenment. His treatise was one of the first steps towards reform." Erwin R. Jacobi in Grove Music Online.

One of the last stars ever to be put under contract to a major studio, MGM put Paula Prentiss under contract in 1960 -- but only after she arranged to marry her live-in boyfriend Richard Benjamin. They have remained married to this day. She made her debut in this light comedy with songs and then went on to be featured in several films with Jim Hutton. They made five films together between 1960 and 1964. Like all contract players, she was obliged to do publicity shots such as this, for one of her early-1960s comedies.

Description
London: N/A, 1841. First Edition. Full leather. Very good. The Victoria Miniature Almanack, featuring a detailed calendar, regal table, and list of bank transfer dates, likely from the year 1841.. Miniature, measures 1 3/8" x 2 1/2". Finely bound in black morocco, with detailed red and gilt embellishments to covers. Red endpapers. Solid text block, light rubbing along edges. Lacking the front free endpaper and title page. Features a frontispiece of the Garden at Buckingham Palace. Other contents include: January through December calendar, a Regal Table with a list of the Royal Family, the Officers of State, a Table of Stamps, and a list of Transfer Days at the Bank. Housed in the original matching morocco and gilt slipcase. A unique example. This almanac, despite lacking the title page, can be dated to the year 1841. The "Almanack Explained" page lists the year as Dominical Letter "C," Golden Number "18," and Cycle of the Sun "2." 1841 is the only year within the reign of Queen Victoria that correlates with all these points.

New York: G A Leavitt & Co., Auctioneers, [1878]. First Edition. Contemporary three quarter leather & marbled bds. - bound by Blackwell. Original printed wrappers in place.. Near fine.. 8vo, viii, 201pp. + frontispiece portrait. Each lot priced and identified throughout. The first of five of Daly sales that took place prior to WWI. This first part composed of many items relating to theater history and original plays benefits from the fact that it contains a manuscript record of the price and purchaser for all 1117 lots. One can therefore trace the origin of some of the Havemeyer sale items in 1914 as well as Stone, Morton, Young, Grey, Bond, King, Willis, Bentley etc. Daly himself was an accomplished playwright and director whose career reads like something of dream come true in the New York theater. Along the way he amassed an enormous library that was "lost" and renewed several times in his life. DAB V, 42 - 45; McKay #2416.

Description
1904. New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1904. Original red cloth. First Edition of the author's third collection of short stories. The title story is quite appropriate more than a century later: an eminent scientist decides to have a bit of a joke on the general public by publishing a perfect parody of the kind of pseudo-scientific nonsense that... is just a little bit too believable to make disproving it an easy task. His book a resounding success, and the public clamoring for more, the professor faces a dilemma: let everybody down by exposing his satire, thus earning eternal enmity and likely ostracism, or give in to the public for more of the same [Sherrod]. This is a fine, bright copy; atypically, the red spine is NOT faded. Garrison A9.I.a. Provenance: bookplate of the collector Christopher Clark Geest.

A near-fine copy; slipcase corners slightly bumped
Description
Berlin: Holzwarth Publications, 2007. A near-fine copy; slipcase corners slightly bumped. 13.5 x 11 inches. 280 pages. Profusely illustrated in color. Two volumes, with a stapled booklet also included; cardboard slipcase. First edition. "Josh Smith's work focuses on themes of authenticity and authorship. He first became known for paintings in which he used his name as a motif on the canvas, shattering the myth of the artist through an act of ironic self-marketing. In his latest series, Abstraction, Smith creates archetypes from abstract paintings--airy compositions in lively colors. Although he takes his stylistic cue from the Abstract Expressionist school, which bestowed mythical status upon the artist, Smith's unusual color combinations and cartoon-like forms retain little of this weighty background. His appropriations from abstract painting are quite direct, and endow this artistic tradition with a refreshing lack of pretension. The first volume of this slipcased set features Smith's abstract paintings; the second features his palette paintings--palettes on which the artist has squeezed out his brushes, pursuing a completely straightforward aesthetic of simple forms. A text booklet contains an interview with the artist" (the publisher).
