Venice: Venturino Ruffinelli, 1546. First edition. vellum. Very Good. FIRST EDITION OF TARTAGLIA'S MOST IMPORTANT CONTRIBUTION TO MATHEMATICS, INCLUDING HIS RULE FOR SOLVING CUBIC EQUATIONS. "The 'mathematical practitioners' of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries seem to be acquiring an important role in histories which deal with the origins of the Scientific Revolution... Those who are fascinated by questions of origins in the history of science and technology find themselves driven more and more to investigate the sudden appearance, as it still seems, of this relatively large and active group. Among the first generation of these practitioners, few made a greater mark than Niccoló Tartaglia, whose works were translated into all the major European tongues, and whose influence in applied mathematics continued perceptibly for more than a century" (A.G. Keller, "Mathematics at Work: Niccoló Tartaglia, Quesiti et Inventioni Diverse"). Tartaglia's Quesiti, includes, without exaggeration, what can be considered the first real advance in algebra since antiquity. It "contains his most important mathematical accomplishment: the independent discovery of the rule for solving third-degree (cubic) equations, a rule first formulated but left unpublished by Sciopione de Ferro in the first or second decade of the sixteenth century. Tartaglia re-solved the problem in 1535 but kept the details a secret for many years, using his knowledge to gain advantage in the frequent public disputations held between scholars in his era. He finally revealed the rule to Girolamo Cardano in 1539 after Cardano swore to keep it secret, but six years later Cardano broke his promise by publishing the rule in his Ars magna ... Tartaglia was incensed at Cardano's breach of promise and abused him roundly in Book IX of the Quesiti, in which he also published his own version of his researches into third-degree equations" (Norman). "Dedicated to Henry VIII, this work contains nine books of questions posed to Tartaglia by various people, and demonstrates his skill in non-mathematical areas: solving problems in the firing of artillery; topographical surveying; equilibrium in balances and statics; a new method for raising sunken ships; etc. In the course of the discussions, some fundamental issues in the theory of motion and of statics are raised, which are elaborated upon in the eighth book ... Among its other important points are the anticipation of the principle of inertia in book three, the observations on the use of compasses in book five, and the solution of cubic equations in book nine" (Roberts and Trent, Bibliotheca Mechanica). New York: The Grolier Club, 1915. First edition. One of 250 copies printed on French hand-made paper. Presentation copy, inscribed on the first blank "To Percival M. Barker, Rudolph Ruzicka, Sept 10, 1915." The recipient, Dr. Percival Barker was, according to his obituary in the New York Times, "a member of the Grolier Club and well known as a collector of rare books." He passed away at the age of 48 in 1930. One of the illustrations, on page 31, is signed by Ruzicka. This beautiful book was not signed at publication and is seldom found signed or inscribed. Slight wear at the head and base of spine, otherwise a very good copy. 4to, illustrated with 30 color wood engravings by Ruzicka of which 10 are full-page printed in Paris by Emile Fequet, original cloth-backed unprinted paper over boards, spine label. Titles include The Return of the Hero by Darrell Figgis, The Master of the Day of Judgment by Leo Perutz, By the Waters of Manhattan by Charles Reznikoff, and Prize Poems 1913. Octavo, [four volumes]. Publisher's original paperback covers, detailed illustrations on covers and endpapers. Solid text blocks, lightly soiled covers, a few stains along edges, internally fine. Housed in the publisher's black and beige cloth slipcase, "Early Paperbacks" in black on blue paper label affixed to spine. The Boni family, including Charles and his brother, Albert, were pioneers in the field of publishing. The brothers began with the Little Leather Library, a set of 30 miniature classics bound in lamb. This was followed by a collaboration with Horace Liveright to launch the Modern Library in 1917. After facing professional differences with Liveright, the Boni brothers opened their own publishing house which allowed each man to pursue his own projects. Charles Boni created Boni Paper Books, a monthly paperback subscription service that yielded 16 total pieces before he quit in 1931 due to limited interest during the Great Depression era.

McKee (1840-1899) began his collection by focusing on books, journals, photographs and playbills related to the British and American stage and eventually expanded his interests to include English and American literature and American history. The sale of McKee's library was a great success for the fledgling Anderson Auction Company with "books that might have sold for only ten cents [reaching] forty or fifty cents." Poe's Tamerlane commanded $2,050, the highest price of the sale and a record for the book. Dickinson, Dictionary of American Book Collectors, p. 227.

A membership flyer printed in April of 1958 published as part of a fundraising drive around the Little Rock Nine. The NAACP was actively fundraising in 1958 to raise money for legal costs in the face of state-led actions in the south attempting to ban the organization. The risk of membership lists from the south being published made the growth of membership in the northern and western US of paramount importance for the organization. The flyer offers several reasons to join on the verso, including the abolition of Jim Crow, wiping out the ghetto, equal justice under the laws and an end to police brutality.

Quarto size, [24] pp. "Somebody's Darlings" is a delightful board book for very young children, with the charming illustrations by Chloe Preston in the style of the "Peek-A-Boos". Information on Chloe Preston (1887-1969) is a bit elusive; from various online sources we gleen that she was born in Britain "in a gentrified English country environment". Her charming illustrations of the Chunkies (anthropomorphic wooden dolls) and the Peek-a-Boos have "clear simple outlines and bright colours, [and] her humorous images portray simple excursions and activities" (n.b., quotes from the web site of the Antique Print Club). ___DESCRIPTION: Glossy thick pasteboard boards with a red cloth spine, with ten thick pasteboard pages covered on both sides with glossy paper, the boards also covered wth glossy paper, onto all of which have been printed the illustrations and text; quarto size (9 7/8" by 7 1/2"), [24] pp. ___CONDITION: Overall better than good, perhaps not quite very good. The author's second novel (but first mystery), "a strange combination of hippie life in the West Village, wealth in Long Island and the war in Vietnam." It's narrated by the female half of an interracial couple, both graduate students in N.Y. (and he a Vietnam vet), as they try to solve the brutal murder of their friend (another vet). Along the way, it emerges that his death may be connected to an attempt to cover up a wartime incident "that has overtones of the massacre at My Lai" -- the CIA is running its own investigation from that angle -- and some of the elusive evidence involves pages from a mid-nineteenth-century diary, the remainder of which contains "politically and historically explosive" contents. (Interestingly, his only previous novel -- "The Journey of Tao Kim Nam," published in 1959, had an (early) Vietnam war setting.) Subsequent to this book, he published his work (for both adult and young adult readers) under the name Malcolm Bosse. .
