Very good plus.
Description
(Paris): (Contact Editions / Three Mountains Press), 1925. First printing. Very good plus.. First edition, in the rare original wrappers, of Stein's magnum opus, an influential Modernist epic. A metafictional account of the Hersland and Dehning families, Stein's AMERICANS was originally written (as the cover notes) in the first decade of the twentieth century. Told in Stein's characteristically repetitive style, the book was too radical for readers at the time, and wasn't published in any form until almost twenty years later when Ford Madox Ford brought portions out in TRANSATLANTIC REVIEW in 1924. The following year Robert McAlmon's legendary modernist press published this edition which, like most Contact productions, is notoriously fragile. Surviving copies are almost ubiquitously found rebound, and copies in the original wrappers, as here, are quite rare. A lovely copy of one of the founding texts of Modernism, which Stein herself rightly compared to Joyce's ULYSSES and Proust's À la recherche du temps perdu. 9.5'' x 7.5''. Original orange printed wrappers. One of 400 copies (with another 100 copies reserved for the US market). [4], 926, [2] pages. First and last gatherings professionally resewn/repaired. Some toning to pages. Wrappers with some mild soil, edgwear.

Description
Boston: Houghton Mifflin Company, 1962. First Edition, First Printing. Cloth. Near fine/near fine. Signed first edition of Silent Spring by Rachel Carson, from the library of fellow conservationist James W. Eike, the president of the Virginia Society of Ornithology.. Octavo, x, [6], 368pp. Green cloth, gilt title on spine and cover. Yellow top-stain, patterned endpapers. Stated "First Printing" on copyright page. Solid text block, slight bumps to edges of spine, a near fine example. In the publisher's first state dust jacket, $5.00 retail price on front flap, chipping to spine and corners, touch of shelf wear, a vibrant example. Thin dampstain along bottom edge of rear flap, faint stain to bottom edge of text block, no impact to text or stability of jacket. Housed in a custom black morocco clamshell, title in gilt on green label over spine. This copy belonged to Mr. and Mrs. James W. Eike, with his ownership stamp on the half title. Inscribed by the author on the half title: "Best Wishes / Rachel Carson." A beautiful example of a landmark work in environmental science and public health. James W. Eike (1911-1983), the recipient of this copy, began working for the U.S. Public Health Service in 1934. He went on to work for the Civil Service Commission, the U.S. State Department, and retired from the U.S. Information Agency in 1970. Eike joined the Virginia Society of Ornithology (VSO) in 1933, serving as president from 1950-1952 and again from 1969-1971. His fifty years of membership is commemorated with the James W. Eike Service Award, recognizing VSO members for their outstanding conservation efforts and service to the organization. Rachel Carson (1907-1964) was a pioneering environmentalist who raised global awareness about the dangers of synthetic pesticides like DDT, both for humans and the biosphere. Her writing and activism is credited with inspiring numerous legislative movements and the eventual creation of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).

Very good plus.
Description
[Various locations in and around Chicago, Il: likely early November, 1960. Very good plus.. Title leaf, plus [25] leaves, illustrated with forty-seven silver gelatin photographs, pasted one per leaf or page, all about 5.5 x 7.5 inches, plus five loose images (two duplicates and three other images not pasted in). Square quarto. Contemporary tan cloth custom photograph album, metal-hinged spine, front cover printed with title reading, "ELECTION 1960." Minor wear and soiling to album. Light occasional thumb-soiling to album leaves, ownership signature reading, "G. Robert Hillman" on title leaf. Photographs in excellent condition. An utterly charming vernacular photograph album assembled during the seminal Presidential Election of 1960, one of the closest presidential elections in United States history, which pitted Vice President Richard Nixon against the junior Senator from Massachusetts, John F. Kennedy. The album features about fifty original photographs on the campaign trail in Illinois, beginning with about a dozen-and-a-half images of Richard Nixon and his local supporters. The photographs capture various angles of Nixon during his stump speech, a young boy waving an "I'm for Nixon" handmade sign, another young boy with a Nixon button on his coat, crowd scenes, a large campaign sign for Nixon-Lodge outside a local store, and more. One image featuring a mixed crowd of Nixon and Kennedy supporters transitions into the next section of photographs, which concentrates on JFK's campaign. The first image in this section is a closeup of a "Kennedy for President" hat, followed by four images of JFK's campaign manager Robert Kennedy making a speech, three images of Eleanor Roosevelt stumping for Kennedy, five images of Lyndon Johnson and his airplane, numerous shots of Kennedy supporters, and crowd shots outside Chicago Blackhawks stadium. The photographs then feature the inside of Chicago Auditorium, where the first three images depict John F. Kennedy - the first shaking hands with Chicago's longtime Mayor Richard Daley and two during his speech (likely his speech of November 4, 1960 - just four days before Election Day). The final three images show supporters of both candidates. The 1960 United States Presidential Election was a watershed moment for the campaign politics of the country. Senator Kennedy won the election with a clear Electoral College margin of 303 to 219. However, Vice President Nixon won three more states than Kennedy, and lost the popular vote only by about 110,000 votes out of more than 68 million votes cast. The election set the course for most of the remainder of the 1960s, but left Nixon soured and suspicious that the election had been stolen from him - a feeling he never let go, and one with ominous echoes today. As indicated in the present album, the 1960 presidential election was passionate on both sides, with each candidate drawing large, enthusiastic crowds for their appearances. The signature on the title leaf of the present album likely identifies the compiler. G. Robert Hillman is a Senior Editor for Politico. Hillman was born in Peoria and grew up on a farm near Flanagan, Illinois, about a hundred miles from Chicago. He went to college at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, and began his career at Chicago Today and the Chicago Sun-Times. Hillman would have been in middle school during the 1960 election campaign, not too precocious for a young man obsessed with politics, especially during one of the most heated and media-intensive campaigns of the 20th century.

Description
Oroville, Ca, 1900. Very good.. Three letters, [13]pp. total on seven lined sheets. Previously folded. Minor wear and toning. An engaging group of three letters from a mining engineer named Jack in Oroville, California, to his partner and perhaps brother Eric that discuss the development of their investments in an area that saw a rapid growth in dredge mining around the turn of the 20th century. Our correspondent was working out a new mechanical process for gold mining on a promising site. However, his partner and addressee had given power of attorney to an investor named Wyckoff who is described as "a snoty little devil" who "knows no more about a mine or my affairs than a jack rabbit," but was starving the operation of cash while delivering a steady stream of insults. At one point Wyckoff, "Left me without cash for ten days when we had nothing but potatoes to feed in the camp." The dastardly money man is also suspected of trying to steal the proprietary process, which had already yielded fruit in Mexico. If that weren't bad enough, the author was in poor health -- passing blood, suffering from continuous headaches, and feeling faint. And yet, as with any mining venture, a fortune was just around the corner: "I will make you money in the mine and prove the process, so we can get bigger mines. Everybody is gold-crazy over here." Good content concerning a region of California that saw significant commercial mining development during the late-19th and early 20th centuries.

Description
1890. [Women Employment] Original vintage photograph of a large group of women seamstresses and tailors at their sewing machines in a factory setting. circa 1890. Sepia. Approximately 5" x 8" with back photographer mat. Rows and rows of women sitting in front of sewing machines gaze into the camera. While single women faced barriers to employment, wives and mothers confronted prejudice that put their jobs at risk after marriage and childbirth. As women took advantage of expanded access to jobs with the advent of factory lines, a new push was made for job security and upward mobility. The women's employment movement first picked up traction in the industrial revolution, as women fought to secure fair hours and wages for female factory workers; In the late 1870s and 80s, women's organizations lobbied for safe conditions and job protection for married women and mothers; and through the 20th century expansion of skilled female labor including civil service, publishing, and medicine. Some of the most radical labor organizing in the West happened thanks to women in the textiles industry, as women fought to secure prosperity and safety under new work conditions. A beautiful photograph of the spirited women, young and old, at the front lines of the changing workplace. Ref:Baxandall, "America's Working Women" p. 94-96, 158. Description
London: Kegan Paul, Trench, & Co, 1886. Limited Edition. Hardcover. Very good +. Number 46 of 111 copies, spine stamped "Artists' Proof Edition", folio size, 234 pp. Originally published in 1884 by G.P. Putnam's Sons, "Onnalinda" created a sensation when first released. A contemporary review states "An anonymous romance -- [which] sustains its interest from first to last. Strange to say, the tale is the pleasanter to read for being in metre, and the reader is beguiled past many pitfalls in the shape of 'asides' by the author by the silvery ring of the verse. It is a tale of the forest, of savage chivalry, of mirthful, happy love-making". Published about thirty years after Longfellow's poem "Hiawatha", it continued to feed the fascination of the Victorians for the perceived simplicity of the native American life and culture, while also feeding an interest in their (imagined) history. While "Hiawatha" has, to some degree, survived the past 130+ years, "Onnalinda" has not fared as well. Set during the time of the French and Indian War, per the web site of "Forgotten Books" comes this summary: "The invasion of the Genesee Valley, in Western New York, by the French under Denonville, and the heroic deeds of the Iroquois in defence of their homes, are historical. But history is vague and legendary concerning the achievements of Onnalinda, the Iroquois princess, whose brilliant adroitness baffled the French general, and whose fascinating beauty drew to her side the chivalrous Captain Stark. The loves and adventures of the gallant captain and the charming Onnalinda, together with the story of Ronald Kent and 'Glinting Star,' are in the province of Romance, and the theme of this tale." This deluxe version, published two years after the first edition, again points to the popularity of the work. Bound in full morocco, with beautifully marbled endpapers and inner dentelles, issued in a strictly limited edition of 111 copies, with lovely engravings which are printed on tissue (a difficult feat for even an accomplished printer). A magnificent production from a time when making books beautiful was an art form, with a story that will delight. ___DESCRIPTION: Bound in full brown morocco, both boards with narrow ruled border of black outlined in gilt, surrounding a second rounded narrow gilt border, spine with gilt lettering and decorations within the compartments, lettered in gilt at the tail of the spine is "Artists' Proof Edition", board edges with narrow gilt rule, inner gilt dentelles, all edges gilt, marbled endpapers, limitation statement preceeding the half-title page, only 111 copies were printed at the Devinne Press, with a facsimile autograph of the printer on the limitation page, illustrations engraved by Frank French from drawings by William T. Smedley printed on tissue, each with a lettered tissue guard; folio size (12" by 9.75"), pagination: [i-xvi], 1-208, [10] pages at rear include facsimile letter and seven extracts from contemporary reviews, including the one cited above. ___CONDITION: Very good plus to near fine, with the binding on the boards smooth and supple, corners straight with minimal rubbing, a strong, square text block with solid hinges, the interior is clean and bright, and the volume is free of prior owner markings; some light rubbing to the spine, most noticeably at the head and tail and a few stray spots of rubbing to the marbled endpapers. A lovely book, beautifully presented. ___POSTAGE: Please note that due to the weight of this volume additional postage may apply; please inquire for details. ___Swan's Fine Books is pleased to be a member of the ABAA, ILAB, and IOBA and we stand behind book we sell. Description
Monaco: Imprimerie de Monaco, 1936. A HISTORY OF THE DISCOVERY OF ANAPHYLAXIS BY RICHET WHO WON THE NOBEL PRIZE AND PORTIER, PHYSICIAN AND MARINE BIOLOGIST, PUBLISHED BY THE PRESS OF MONACO, COMEMMORATING THE ROLE OF PRINCE ALBERT IN 1901. 14 inches tall folio volume printed paper covers with original glassine overwraps, faint handstamp of Aquatic Research Institute to cover, [4], 24 pp. corners bumped, text unmaked, very good (French language). CHARLES ROBERT RICHET (1850-1935) was a French physiologist who initially investigated a variety of subjects such as neurochemistry, digestion, thermoregulation in homeothermic animals, and breathing. He won the Nobel Prize in recognition of his work on anaphylaxis in 1913. In 1887 Richet was named professor of physiology at the Collège de France, and in 1898 he became a member of the Académie de Médecine. It was, however, his work with Paul Portier on anaphylaxis that in 1913 won him the Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine. This research helped elucidate hay fever, asthma and other allergic reactions to foreign substances and explained some previously not understood cases of intoxication and sudden death. In 1914 he became a member of the Académie des Sciences. In 1902, while researching the toxins produced by the Portuguese man-of-war and sea anemone, Richet and Portier injected dogs with sublethal does of these poisons in an attempt to convey immunity and determine experimentally the parameters of toxicity. To their surprise, they discovered that second doses of the poison caused shock and death in some of their experimental animals, leading them to conclude that the poison had an effect exactly opposite to the immunizing properties of serums, vaccines, etc.—instead of reinforcing the body's resistance to a foreign substance, a sublethal dose of the poison created a prolonged and sometimes deadly hypersensitivity to future doses. PAUL PORTIER (1866-1962) received the M.D. and the degree of docteur ès sciences from the University of Paris, having worked there under Albert Dastre, who held the chair of general physiology. He was also the director of the Institut Océanographique, and as such supervised more than 100 doctoral dissertations. Portier's chief discovery grew out of his interest in marine biology. He was a regular member of the scientific staff that accompanied Albert I of Monaco on his summer oceanographic voyages on the Princesse Alice II. July 1901 Portier and a fellow physiologist, Charles Richet, professor at the Paris Faculty of Medicine, undertook the study of the nature of the contact toxin secreted by coelenterates. An abundant catch of Physalia was brought on board off the Cape Verde Islands, and Portier and Richet ground up some of the specimens with sand and seawater. They filtered the mixture, then injected the resulting fluid into pigeons and guinea pigs, which soon fell into a state of profound anesthesia. Portier and Richet then determined to investigate whether an immunity might be produced by the injection of repeated doses of the toxin at long intervals; since such long-term experimentation could not be performed at sea, they decided to resume their work in Paris. In their second series of experiments they injected a toxin derived from Actinia into dogs. Rather than becoming immune, the animals became sensitized to the toxin with repeated injections, and the toxic symptoms increased. In the most dramatic instance, a dog named Neptune received a weak injection that produced no effect; three days later the dose was repeated, again with no visible result. Three weeks later, however, Neptune had become hypersensitized to the degree that a third injection of the weak toxin caused him to collapse and die in a state of severe shock. Portier and Richet named this negative immunization "anaphylaxis" and by their experiment opened the new field of allergy studies. The scientific community only gradually realized that Portier had had a most significant role in this major discovery. PRINCE ALBERT 1ST (HONORE CHARLES) GRIMALDI {1848 – 1922) was Prince of Monaco from 1889 until his death. His growing up on the shores of the Mediterranean and, as a young man, his service in the Spanish and French navies engendered an early and perpetuating passion for the sea; it deepened further into a combined avocation and serious study of oceanography and marine biology. For that pursuit, he acquired progressively larger and specially equipped yachts manned with an on-board scientific staff and fitted with laboratory apparatuses and specimen-holding tanks. In 1885, he initiated a series of cruises accompanied by distinguished guest scientists who joined him in the conduct of innovative oceanographic surveys that would contribute to advancements in the field. Albert I was also the "instigator and promulgator" of the oceanographic science he contributed to create. He founded the Institut océanographique, Foundation Albert I, Prince of Monaco in 1906, a private foundation recognized of public utility. It has two buildings: The Oceanographic Institute of Paris, now renamed Ocean House, and what became the world-renowned Oceanographic Museum of Monaco. This includes an aquarium, a museum, and a library, with research facilities in Paris.

Wien: Universal Edition [U.E. 12196], 1929. Octavo. Original publisher's wrappers. 1f. (title, notes), 3-80 pp. Wrappers slightly worn and soiled. Light browning throughout. First Edition in this format. Rufer (E), pp. 52-53. "... the variations are vividly differentiated from one another by individual sound spectrums, at times reminiscent of chamber music and at others reaching the extreme complexity of rich scoring for the full orchestra. The twelve-tone method used in Op. 31 is based on a hierarchic equivalence of the pitch material in a basic row related to the conventional idea of a theme, also employing inversion and transpositions derived from that row. The genuinely rigid schemata breaks forth with emphasis by distributing the pitches of the row among various instruments, resulting in the individual voices producing motifs whose pitch progressions need not correspond to those fixed in the row's structure."
