Description
New York The Viking Press, 1936 Illustrated by Bemelmans. First edition, first printing. Original publisher's paper-covered illustrated boards in a matching illustrated first issue dust jacket. Very good book with light wear to top and bottom edges and spine ends, and a bit of offsetting to endpapers; very good unclipped dust jacket with some chipping and wear to edges and spine hinges, small chip to foot of spine, a couple of closed tears to spine hinges, some soiling to rear panel, a bit of toning to front panel and spine. A very good copy overall, with remarkably bright illustrations. This beloved children's story is the first in a series of eleven books featuring the young protagonist Madeline. Set in a Catholic boarding school in Paris, the story begins when Madeline is rushed to the hospital with a ruptured appendix. After Madeline recuperates and returns to school, the other children are fascinated by her scar, endearingly hoping that they might also have the same surgery. Although Bemelmans published other books, Madeline remains his best-known work. Notably, Bemelmans authored only the first six books in the Madeline series; after his death, the story was kept alive through five more books published by his grandson, John Bemelmans Marciano. Madeline was awarded the Caldecott Honor in 1940, and remains a classic in the genre of children's literature.. Signed. First Edition. Hard Cover. Fine/Dust Jacket Included. Illus. by Bemelmans, Ludwig.
