Description
Ephrata: Samuel Baumann, 1811. Broadside. 405 x 330 mm., (16 x 13 inches). Watermark "A K" for Abraham Keller. Title and two columns of text in German, with a central woodcut image of Adam and Eve, the Tree of Knowledge and the Serpent; all enclosed with a typographical border. Folded; with some paper repair to upper right corner and at the margin of the center fold; the entire broadside expertly backed with Japanese paper. 'Adam and Eve' broadsides were among the most popular of all Pennsylvania German broadsides. They were printed by many printers in numerous editions, but primarily in German. Walter Boyer attributed the popularity of 'Adam and Eve' broadsides to the quality of the graphic image, the broadsides wide distribution and its expression of Christian values." This Ephrata printing by Samuel Bauman is the earliest example of the 'Adam and Eve' broadside and includes all the elements that were used in later examples printed by other Pennsylvania German printers. This includes the sixteen-stanza poem printed in two columns, the central woodcut of Adam and Eve, the use of fig leaves to cover the genitalia of both figures, and the serpent offering the apple to Eve. Research by Alfred L. Shoemaker has identified twenty-nine separate issues of this form of broadside by fourteen different printers. In Walter Boyer's essay "Adam und Eve im Paradies" he describes the Adam and Eve broadside printed by Samuel Baumann in 1811. At the base of the woodblock the initial "R & W S" are carved into the block and Boyer makes the reasonable assumption that they are the signature of the cutter who created the block. The woodcut was so popular that it was used in a Philadelphia printing of the broadside by Moritz Dahlem fifty years after it was originally cut. Samuel Baumann was a member of the Ephrata Cloister and a papermaker and printer who inherited the business in 1810 from his father John, a distinguished member of the Cloister. His cousin Joseph took over the business from Samuel in 1816 and was carried on well into the middle of the century. "Samuel Bauman (1788-1820) was a householder at the Ephrata Cloister. He printed only a short time and from about 1810 to 1816. Products from his press were primarily broadsides, with only one booklet credited to him" (Earnest). The paper stock was made by Abraham Keller and the watermark 'A K' appears below the woodcut in the near center of the sheet. "Abraham Keller married Elizabeth Feger, daughter of the papermaker Paly Feger. Sometime before Feger died in 1790 he deeded his paper mill in Exeter Township, Berks County, Pennsylvania to Keller... Hathan Sellers manufactured moulds for Keller in 1796 and 1804. On February 23, 1804, Keller ordered a mould watermarked 'A K', Earnest, Flying Leaves and One-Sheets, p. 200. Yoder, Pennsylvania German Broadside, pp. 202-03. Walter Boyer, "Adam und Eva im Paradies," The Pennsylvania Dutchman 8, no. 2 (Fall-Winter 1956/57), pp. 14-18. Alfred Schoemaker, "Adam and Eve Broadsides" The Pennsylvania Dutchman, 4, no. 6 (October 1952), pp. 4-5. Stopp, 4:70. The Times of Philadelphia, February 23, 1879. Description
New York: Alfred A. Knopf, 1930. First edition. A small stain on the top edge, boards a bit soiled, an about very good copy without dustwrapper. Nicely Inscribed by the author: "For Emilio in memory of the time when we will go to parties again [three words indecipherable] Carlo. September 2, 1942." In this novel, Van Vechten thoroughly distills the peculiar intensity of late 1920s Manhattan, when the city functioned as a crucible for social experimentation. Racial boundaries temporarily blurred in nightclub darkness, sexual mores underwent radical revision, and speakeasy culture created an atmosphere of shared transgression that momentarily dissolved class distinctions. Van Vechten captures the era's defining paradox: the simultaneous embrace of surface frivolity and desperate authenticity. The compulsive pursuit of novelty masked a collective anxiety about meaning in a world where the Great War had discredited traditional structures of authority, yet no viable replacements had emerged.

Description
San Antonio: C. Ekmark, 1946. Very good.. Panoramic photograph, 8 x 52.25 inches. Very minor wear. A dramatic panoramic image capturing the 23rd Infantry Battalion of the Second Infantry Division while training at Camp Swift, Texas in the wake of the Second World War. Four large groups of soldiers are ranged across the photograph, with the officers in the middle-front of the image, all standing in front of three long rows of jeeps and military transport trucks. Camp Swift, located just west of Austin in Bastrop County, can be seen in the far background. "During World War II, [Camp Swift] reached a maximum strength of 90,000 troops and included, at different times, the 95th, 97th, and 102d Infantry divisions, the 10th Mountain Division, the 116th and 120th Tank Destroyer battalions, and the 5th Headquarters, Special Troops, of the Third Army.  Swift was the largest army training and transshipment camp in Texas. It also housed 3,865 German prisoners of war. After the war much of the site was returned to former owners. The government retained 11,700 acres as a military reservation. That land housed parts of the Texas National Guard, a medium-security federal prison, and a University of Texas cancer research center" - Handbook of Texas online. The photographer, Carl John Ekmark of San Antonio was a noted and somewhat prolific chronicler of military life throughout the Lone Star State.

Description
Mountain Grove, 1936. Small broadside measuring 11 x 8 ½ inches. Pin holes on margins, some small marginal tears, very good minus. Very Good. This anti-FDR broadside - which did little to alter the outcome of the 1936 election - underwent a handful of printings in the leadup to the 1936 election, this one by Michael S. Glenn of Mountain Grove, Missouri. The broadside attacks various New Deal policies including the Agricultural Adjustment Act (3A). The last item on the fictional auction list is a “Vote Baiting Relief Fol De Rols,” which includes, “down and out writer projects, rag doll fantasies, tin can daubings, national youth ticklers, $50,000 ten-cent pension probes; alphabetical tom tits for making district and regional white collar pads, hat stretchers, blind-bridles for voters, wallisized and hopkin-ated electro non-talking check grinding machines, etc.” We find scant information on Michael Glenn, the copyright holder, but he likely copied an existing design, as the single institutionally-held copy at the Vermont Historical Society doesn’t show a copyright holder.

Description
New York: William R. Scott, Inc., Publisher of Young Scott Books, 1947. Hardcover. Near fine/good +. Shaw, Charles G. Quarto, [36] pp., in dust jacket. An endearing children's book discussing the wonderful things to be found in the dark...such as the moon, the stars, and Santa Claus. It is also about the people of the night, such as policemen and firemen, but "mostly it is about how different people feel about the night" (n.b, from dust jacket flap). With wonderful illustrations by Charles Green Shaw (1892-1974), "a key figure in early American abstract art", whose works are in major institutions around the world, including the Met, the MFA, the Museum of Modern Art, the Smithsonian, and the Musee d'Art Moderne de Paris (n.b., quote and information from Wiki). While this not the first printing, the book is relatively scarce in the online marketplace (as of this writing, there is only one copy online) and this copy in near fine condition (with a Good plus jacket). ___DESCRIPTION: Bound in full plain grey cloth over boards, black lettering stamped onto the spine, plain grey endpapers, illustrated double-spread title page in grey and black with a few highlights in red, illustrations on every page (many of them double-spread) interspersed with text, mostly in grey and black with some red and yellow; quarto size (9 7/8" by 8 1/8"), unpaginated with eighteen leaves. In the publisher's jacket of grey with abstract tops of buildings in black, scattered stars and the moon in white and yellow, black lettering, with a summary of the book on both flaps.. ___CONDITION: Volume near fine, with clean boards, gently bumped corners with minimal rubbing, a strong, square text block with solid hinges, the interior is clean and bright, and entirely free of prior owner markings; very shallow creases at the tip of the top corners of the text block, overall a near fine example. The dust jacket better than good, with all component parts present and attached; it has been price-clipped and there is a chip out of the bottom edge of the front panel (approximately 4" wide and ranging from 3/4" to 1 1/2" tall) with loss of a portion of the final letter in the illustrator's name. ___POSTAGE: International customers, please note that additional postage may apply as the standard does not always cover costs; please inquire for details. ___Swan's Fine Books is pleased to be a member of the ABAA, ILAB, and IOBA and we stand behind every book we sell. Description
United States, 1880. Very good. Toned.. A pocket-sized political cartoon (3.5" by 2.25") poking fun at a politician's failed bid for mayor. The caption reads, "HECTOR falls in climbing into the Mayor's Chair". In the woodcut image, an onlooker points as a whiskered politician falls from a tall pole into a river, after trying to reach the "mayor's chair" at the top of the pole. The river he is falling into the labeled "Salt River". The turn of phrase "to go up Salt River" or "to be rowed up Salt River" is a catch phrase usually used in the context of political candidates or parties that find themselves defeated or pushed to the wayside. It originated in the 1820s, and was heavily used in the 1848 Presidential campaign (e.g. cartoons showing Zachary Taylor with his head above water while rivals drown in "Salt River").

Description
Bookmart Limited, (1995). Quarto, full-color photo. illus. slick boards (hardcover), [148] pp. Bookplate; otherwise, Fine; in a Fine dust jacket. From dust jacket: Founded on 25th September 1920 no other aircraft company has had such a product ranger during such a protracted period as De Havilland. During the 1920s and 1930s the celebrated Moth series of light aircraft were produced. This included the Tiger moth which trained most of the RAF’s pilots just prior to, and during the Second World War. Then there was the Mosquito with the odd airliner thrown in for good measure. During the Second World War De Havilland were developing their own jet engine, the Golin, to be installed in their jet fighter, the Vampire. Even before the war was over thoughts were being turned to the Comet, a civil jetpowered airliner. Based on Mosquito experience, De Havilland produced the DH103 Hornet, not a single one of which, alas, exists. The supersonic fighter was tackled with the DH110 and subsequent development led to the Sea Vixen shipboard fighter. This was armed with the Firestreak infra-red guided missile. By the late 1950s it was obvious that the company had to expand and it was merged into the Hawker Siddeley Group of companies. Hawker Siddeley being much the larger company, it was the name that was retained. The spirit of the company still exists, however, at the Civil Aircraft Division of what is now British Aerospace. This book is a stunning photographic tribute to the company and sets out to depict as many types of De Havilland aircraft as possible in their natural enviornment -- the air. All of the photographs have been shot for the book in the UK, Canada, New Zealand and Australia.
