Description
Three measures from the second theme of the second movement. Notated in black ink on ivory card stock with autograph titling and date of 30 December 1907, St. Petersburg. Small oblong octavo (70 x 108 mm). Mounted on a taupe mat on heavy gray silk-bordered cardboard below a bust-length color reproduction painting of the composer. Overall size 260 x 150 mm. Composed in 1888, Sheherazade, Rimsky-Korsakov's characteristically colorful orchestral work, was inspired by the fantastical One Thousand and One Nights (The Arabian Nights), a collection of Middle Eastern folk tales in Arabic compiled during the Islamic Golden Age (the 8th-13th centuries) and first translated into English in ca. 1706-21. "Russian orientalism received its best-known expression in Sheherazade (1888). The work is based on A Thousand and One Nights, the story of the sultana Sheherazade, who keeps her husband, the sultan Shakriar, from his intention of killing her by telling him stories for one thousand and one nights. The encounter between barbarous despotism and feminine seduction ... - a contrast that Rimsky-Korsavkov's work emphasizes from the start - renders the story an oriental paradigm par excellence." Maas: A History of Russian Music, p. 175. The work was adapted for ballet by Diaghilev's Ballets Russes, premiering in Paris at the Opéra Garnier on 4 June 1910 to Rimsky-Korsakov's music, with dramatic choreography by Michel Fokine, striking sets and costumes by Léon Bakst, and iconic dancers Vaslav Nijinsky and Ida Rubinstein. A fine example from one of the composer's most popular works and the one with which he is most closely identified, penned just under six months before he died on 21 June 1908.

Description
London: Charles Eyre & Andrew Strahan, 1787. First edition. 27 George III, Chapter 44. A Fine copy measuring 310 x 190mm and collating complete: [2], 987-988. A scarce and important piece of legal history, which ESTC records at only one library (Lincoln's Inn) and which does not appear in the modern auction record. The present is the only example on the market. At the start of the Restoration, "English church courts were revived by an act of Parliament on 27 July 1661 to resume their traditional task of correcting spiritual and moral misdemeanors. Soon thereafter, parishioners across England's dioceses once more faced admonition, fines, excommunication, and even imprisonment if they failed to conform to the laws of the restored Church of England" (Aklund). As much as these courts sought to reestablish a monolithic Anglican communal identity during Charles II's reign, their position in the 18th century became "a case study in the secularization of the legal system" particularly given their theoretical justification based in the problematic concept of divine right (Harris). Numerous acts, the present example among them, "represented an important step in the direction of limiting the reach of of ecclesiastical jurisdiction" (Harris). An Act to Prevent Frivolous and Vexatious Suits in Ecclesiastical Courts was passed in 1787, drawn from a bill presented in Parliament the previous year. Its major accomplishment was the removal of Church authority in the regulation of private sexual behaviors: "It shall be further enacted by the Authority aforesaid That no Suit shall be commenced in any Ecclesiastical Court for Fornication, or Incontinence, of for any striking or brawling." While the Church may have voiced its moral codes or enacted social shaming within its own communities, it no longer had the legal authority to regulate or punish sexual behavior. Such secularization had significant benefits across a number of communities. For survivors of assault, it ended the Church's ability to mandate that a woman marry her attacker; for queer communities it prevented Biblically based persecution; for sex workers it took away the risk of arrest or fines for conducting their livelihoods. Ultimately, the jurisdiction of ecclesiastical courts over sexual behavior (whether in the form of obscene or defamatory words, sexual engagement and sensual pleasure) was terminated by this act. Little to no legal regulation of sex would be enacted until the next century, when the 1861 Offences Against the Person Act and a series of Contagious Diseases Acts would seek to give secular courts more control over individuals' bodies. Description
Malden, Mass: [Jacob W. Powell], 1937. Very good. 9¼” x 6¼”. Blue pebbled cloth, title gilt. Pp. xvi, 136 + 60 [of 60] photographically illustrated plates interspersed. Very good: light wear, a hint of toning to leaves. This is a detailed and heavily illustrated travelogue written by an AME Zion Elder and religious educator, Jacob W. Powell. The first three pages of the book include a detailed chronology of Powell's life, along with his numerous certifications related to religious teaching. From it, we learn that Powell was born a Methodist Episcopalian in 1866 and converted to the AME Zion Church in Boston in 1881. He worked as a stenographer for a number of religious and civil clients before becoming ordained a Deacon and later Elder. Powell served as Pastor of a few AME Zion and Baptist churches and, according to this book's dedication, taught over 4,000 students during his 54-year career. The book is simultaneously a travel log, travel guide, and collection of Powell's short essays on various religious subjects. It relays Powell's account of his six-week tour and is broken up into 25 chapters, each with numerous subdivisions. Powell described his observations of myriad sights and experiences throughout Rome, Naples, Genoa, Marseilles, Alexandria and Cairo, and Palestine. He related an incident involving a “Mohammedan lad” who took a liking to him and his group while they were visiting mosques, surmising that “perhaps my similar complexion helped to draw him toward me,” and of whom he snapped a photograph, angering a crowd of adults who had gathered nearby. His writing, while often rambling, is also often action-packed, such as this near accident returning to Marseilles: “ANOTHER THRILLING INCIDENT—as it looked to me, our ship came perilously near 'going on to rocks' just before we reached the narrow outlet from Marseilles Harbor . . . . jagged rocks loomed ominously on either side of this narrow outlet as the 'Excalibur' pushed her prow forward. Hardly any saw the danger until the Captain in the pilot house looked out of his window and shouted to his deck officers, 'Throw out your sheet (?) anchor!' Immediately the command was obeyed (good discipline aboard this ship), and the staunch vessel stood fast within fifty yards or so from the perilous rocks!” Powell's descriptions are complemented by detailed historical and geographical data as well as 60 plates of maps, illustrations and photographic images. He clearly intended this to be a guide book as well, as he provided histories of seemingly countless tourist destinations, as well as information on languages, locals, cities he did not get to visit and more. He also waxed on many religious topics including the history of Christianity, provided brief statements of the beliefs of Muslims and Jews, and devoted four pages to his outline on the symbolism of the book of Revelation. Also of note is a rare piece of ephemera laid in to the book: Powell's promotional order form for this book, as well as others he'd written, along with a number of blurbs. A meticulous and well-illustrated travelogue and collection of religious essays by an African American educator and religious leader. OCLC locates five copies.
